Why would you give up using a mobile phone for the inconvenience? They are a convenience because it takes little or no effort to keep in contact with people, if you don't want people to call you then block them.

Also, I also don't get how people would be able to have a social life without a mobile.

Also again, I don't get why people are talking about "finally breaking down" and getting one. Is it some sort of challenge or ambition not to have a mobile?

Lots of questions.

Yeah and they're not that expensive either. You can get some really cheap plans and phones.

my dad was a bit of a ponce back then and got a car-phone (!) about, I'd say, 25 years ago in his (I said ponce, right?) Porsche 911 if memory serves me. we were all thoroughly impressed by his James-Bond-ness back then. today? is this really an issue anymore?

Yes but like 95% of the communication used by the phone is for my Boyfriend, Im quite pathetic otherwise.

Do you own a Cell Phone?
Kind of. I lost mine, I think I left it at my parents house when I visited. I hope that's where it is. I'd just say "good riddance" but I still have 10 more months of contract!

I have a cell phone, but I might abandon it when I go to university, I would much rather go for voip then deal with many calls.

You won't survive uni without a mobile. I don't understand you people is it a matter of pride not to have one?

I am in uni, and don't have one. Never will either!

Yes, I have a healthy relationship, I have a circle of friends (when i go home), with whom I could go out with every day with if I chose to. Do I pass?

Living on campus, I scarcely use my phone while I could just walk next door or to the next dorm to talk to someone. I really only use my phone to talk to friends living far away.

Yes...don't talk on it much as I hate talking on phones, but I carry it with me everywhere as it's quite handy.

Can't say I know anyone in r/l that doesn't have one.

My wife bought me a Blackberry last year after I managed to wash my other cell phone while in the breast pocket of my ACU.

Its ok, but over-rated I think. Not sure if its actually worth the extra cost.

Obama has a Blackberry :goodjob:

No :p What do you do when you need to contact someone at uni? Or when you have an emergency? I don't know if payphones exist anymore. I haven't seen one in ages. Maybe I am just not looking but I doubt there are any around anymore.

Yeah but people aren't always in the dorm, or in the same dorm, and in my case I'm in a big uni which has a big campus so people aren't exactly down the road.

Who do i need to contact?

I've never been in a emergency that I needed a phone and someone else wasn't close by.

What if someone needs to contact you? You can't constantly be in front of an instant messenger or near a land line.

No one needs me that bad

You sure about that? I'm sure that some people would want to know that they can get ahold of you when they need to instead of trying to chase you down through others.

Contracts are brutal, it would be very difficult to convince me to sign one for a phone.

Same way people managed before cell phones.

And in a real emergency, phone towers are going to be overloaded and non-functional in any case, and you're going to need to find a POTS to phone emergency services.

While I have a cellphone, unless I'm expecting a call, I don't answer it. I've never actually had the ringer on (either silent, or vibrate), I just let it go to voicemail, and reply at my convenience.
