I always play with them on, though I’ll admit in past versions I’ve turned off bad events because I got tired of rebuilding farms every 5 turns. Current version feels much better.

Some of the bad events I’m not entirely sure what they do though. Like I see notifications about a plague looming or a hurricane but I have never noticed those affecting anything.

When it says it means a plague or hurrican is looming, it doesn't mean it will come to one of your cities, but likely to hit someone. You certainly know if a hurrican hits an important city. Plagues are pretty annoying early on, particularly in your capital.

I always play with them on -- they do feel rather repetitive, and a little disjointed from the map itself, but i do enjoy the feature a lot. Without a little randomness you're just playing a spreadsheet with a fancy GUI

would love to see them built out further, so they feel truly dynamic

Kind of interesting to see a general split down the middle with people using or not using yet the vast majority of the comments say they don't.

I don't agree they make the make the game easier, as you can have some pretty bad events, which can be quite damaging at certain times. Presuming that you don't turn of bad events. Yes they can be repetative, but so can other parts of the game.

Far worse in my opinion, which I don't use, are Ancient Ruins, which definitely can give a real advantage to the player early on, with no downside.

I don't like ruins either but I roll with random civs and it feels unfair to Shoshone if they're taken out.

It's been a few months since I played with events enabled and so i don't know if they were changed since then, but my impression was, that they only serve as an annoyance. It's way less tedious playing without them.

I would never wanna play without events enabled, Community Events, and Events and Decisions. I very much hope those two mods get rolled into VP! Events help immensely with immersion and sandbox storytelling.

That's good to hear. When they were introduced, Gazebo hoped that improving the events system would be a community effort, and that they would be added to the base game.
Enginseer and I spent I-don't-even-want-to-know-how-long adding new events.

These days, I play with them disabled :'( I came to the conclusion that even with more varied options, doing exactly what I want them to, I don't like them in Civ V.
I think they probably should be disabled by default and was considering proposing it as such.

I used to love playing with event but after a while the nature of that system put me off. Instead of having chain events that link from one another with proper causes and consequences and the option to manipulate it based on tech/policy, a lot of them are just random one-time good/bad rolls that happened unexpectedly. Not every events that pop up need to immediately have an effect, foreshadowing potential events would help players to actually make a decision to prepare for anything that might come instead of just watch it happens.
If someone were to revive this system they should take a look at Humankind event system. While the opening/foreshadowing events can be semi-randomized based on what happened in game, the subsequence event flows very naturally and also keep changing based on what options you picked, and it tells a much better story.

Yeah I also thought about that, but newcomers may never realize VP supports events if we disable them by default. It's still a great idea and framework, but the game has enough randomness for me.

Wow, thank you so much for that new events link! :) I never saw that before! I've been using the old Community Events (v 5) and Events and Decisions (v 14). I thought that's all there was. I love your work. Thank you for everything you and your team have done.

That's sad how great things about VP like Events and Zeppelins keep getting removed :(.
