Do you play with those ruins which give you population, $, culture, technologies, etc?

In my opinion, I usually disable them so any civ can start with a huge advantage if they find lots of ruins...

What about you?

Sometimes on, sometimes off.

I like them, all kind of surprise really. I liked Civ 2's earthquakes as well.

I leave them on, exploring is more fun. I like playing the game with it's default settings. The randomness of the ruins makes the game more interesting to me. I have had games were I get beat to every ruin., which is extra frustrating when you finish your turn 1 tile away from
it only to see some scout from another civ jump on it the minute you hit the end turn button. But I once had a very lucky game (King level, Continents) where I entered about a
dozen ruins within the first 25 turns.

I play with 'em on.

The idea is that you will shape your Civ based on what you get in the early ruins... most of the time it doesn't really affect my strategy personally.

Same reasoning here. They're not quite potent enough to do that in CiV, but an ArcherScout is pretty awesome.

Now GalCivII, that game can give you some huge bonuses from space wrecks. You can easily get a 15% boost to economic output through wreck exploration, plus the same to multiple other attributes. Maybe if you're lucky you'll even get an ancient Ranger-class starship (the equivalent of picking up a Rifleman with your Scout). Of course, GalCiv is also an SP only game.

I think there were Earthquakes in Civ 4 (I remember hurricanes and volcanoes in Civ 4 for sure)

Ruins On for the chance for extra Culture or even a technology early on.

On, I don't mind the randomness. It adds some fun to exploration.

I leave them on, and almost never get culture or techs. But the notion that one time I might get the upper-hand on the AIs keeps me coming back like the lottery. Inevitably I always lose the CiV slot machine.

I remember the events like hurricanes, floods, improved roads, the challenges that popped up everyonce in a while that gave you a bonus if completed them. But I thought one of the Civ games had actual volcanos on the map that went off every once in a while. Maybe it was 4. idk

Usually OFF. I would like to have negative bonuses also. It is not exploring right now, for me it is "Indiana's Jones always positive results tomb riding" ;-)

SMAC had the volcanoes

On, makes exploring even more fun.

About Civ 2: wasn't it great when you went for those villages, plundered them and out came those eight barbarians? Fortunately, not all of them attacked most of the time. :D
