for those who don't know you can hit ctrl-G to put a grid on, do usually play like this?

Absolutely. I hate it when my troops go off into the weeds.

All the time. It's gotten to a point where I can't imagine playing without it.
It's just annoying having to turn it on every time I play the game.

I don't use it when I play the game, but I like it when I make maps in the editor.

i definitely use it, i really hate it when i make a movement mistake that could have been prevented with grids on.

Sometimes i use it when i want to count the amount of tiles on an island (to decide how many cities i want on it). Counting is easier with grid.

No, it just adds to the experience more.

I only flip it on momentarilly to check on a spot where eyeballing it doesn't give a clear count.

i switch it on when it comes to 1 tile "can i attack or will i end the turn before the enemy" AND in the settling phase.

But usually I turn it off, visually more pleasant.

only when i need to calculate something.

tight combat in war or settlement of cities.

otherwise i always have it OFF! love to see the land's beauty fully.

'Other - Use it rarely, and it's on for a second, then back off.'

Didn't feel that 'sometimes' quailified for that.

To be honest -- I don't know!

I may or may not be playing with the grid on. There's so much to look at: units, cities, terrain and all, that I don't pay attention to the grid.
I think I sometimes put it on when I'm placing cities, but I can't recall if I put it back off afterwards or not.
That's why I voted 'sometimes'...

i woted no, but i would like to ask if there's a list of quick-commands for c3/c3c anywhere on civfanatics... exept the grid, zoom and worker-commands... i can't find anything on it in the pedia.
