I have noticed that many well-written stories that do not contain any images do not always get as much replies as I feel they should, while other stories can involve simply telling (with sometimes poor spelling and grammar) where you moved the spearman to kill the tank, but get hugely popular. I find it a pity that we need pictures nowadays when this is still a story forum, and that a great many stories that were classics in their day would likely be ignored now.

Do you stay on and read continuing stories, even if they're just blocks of text? Or do they need pictures to captivate you?

P.S.: Oh, and I know that there's plenty of stories with pictures that write excellently-Black Adder and Sullla are but two examples among many, of course. But we'll stick to the question for now.

I require pictures. I'm not a fan of stories. I prefer articles and such, but when there are pictures, I can read a few lines and see what's going on.

Actually, when reading stories, I find it much better to read it off paper. I find it hard to actually read a whole block of text from a computer. Imagine, photons attacking mein eyes!!

But, seriously, while some writers are really good, I'm no capable of staring at words for too long, which kinda spoils my reading experience.
If there were good blocks of text, recommend them to me and I'll print them out.. :D

Pictures sort of remove the monotony of black marks on grey so it it easier on the eyes, for some reason..

I read both but I do prefer ones with pictures. Only need screenshots of the map really though just so I know the lay of the land.

Pictureless stories are often the best. Look at Vanadorn,Zeeter,Uknemisis and others. These get massive amounts of responses.

I agree with silver 2039. Vanadorn's Pax Romana is very well written, captivates the imagination, and I find adds a new dimension to the CivIII experience. I guess it depends on personal preference - as always!

i think i read about 50-50. both kinds have merit, though i prefer either no pix at all (to let your imagination run wild) or a few scattered screenies (for reference). the blackadder stories are great combos - both writing and pix.
my main point is - if the work is nicely done, i dont care. whatever helps capture the mind, be it pix or plain text, works for me.

While I check out the story thread daily, I never read stories without pictures. I do not require massive amounts of them, just enough to have a bearing on the map so I can see the lay of the land. Without this I can not get into a write-up.

I prefer stories with pictures. Since most of the stories on this forum are about civilization, I like to have a visual of what the world looks like, and where he is, that sort of stuff.

I like both. I really don't care if a story has pictures, so long as it is entertaining and exciting.

(EDIT: I would like to point out, though, that I get really annoyed when the pictures stretch over the edge of the screen and I have to scroll back and forth to read the thing.)

I'm the same way, if a story isn't well written no amount of pictures will make me want to read it, while if it is well written I don't care whether it has pictures or not. (Pax Romana being a very good example of the latter)

I think that it doesn't really matter whether there are pictures or not in a story. If a story is well written there is no need for pictures. Besides, I am satisfied with the pictures of the story that are in my mind's eye. Pictures are for people who don't have that much imagination.

I think people shun authors that have no pictures, i mean no one ever replies to my pic-less England:Nation of the Queen

Nope, I like to have a visual understanding of at least some kind...

Maybe I would if they were written in Finnish.

Togukawa/Japanese thread down there is a prime example how good writing and map-usage should shake hands.

Unfortunatly for me, my cursed computer won't let me get a screenie!

i read both, but i rarely read at all because I cant read very long on the computer screen. If its important, I print it out. What a waste of ink.

I don't require pictures (nor do a lot of people- Hail Caesar and Pax Romana do quite well), but they do help...a break from the reading.

I prefer pictures. I like to see whats going on and I tend to use pictures alot in my stories. I tend to get put off by word only stories
