So.. Kosovo was a part of the medieval Serbian state for about 250 years (according to Wikipedia, 1180 to 1455), until it was re-conquered again in 1912, by the Serbs.

Serbia itself was founded in 1077 (right?)

So.. given that.. it doesn't seem to me that Kosovo is an "integral part of Serbia". Can anyone enlighten me why this claim is made.. as well as the claim that Kosovo is the "cradle" of Serbia?

Serbs came from "White Serbia" todays Czech Republic :) and they came "down" to Balkans in 7th century invited in that time by Byzantine emperor, to settle north from them but to accept Orthodox religion (Byzantines saw that Roman Catholic church is rapidly moving towards east (today Russia) and they knew that those where Slavic lands so in hope they will keep the eastern lands they started converting Slavic pagans to Orthodox religion...
thats how Serbs came

Pretty soon just settled Serbs started creating first countries on todays: Dalmatia (Croatia), Montenegro, Raska (Central Serbia), Northern Macedonia (including Kosovo), Northern Epirus (Albania), Bosnia (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Eastwards where Bulgars, north were Hungarians (Serbs called them Ugars), north west where Croats (pretty soon conquered by Ugars), east was the sea, and south Byzantium... no Albanians nor Albania...

first mention that I know of Albanians is in 15th century when they fought together with all Christians in Balkans... but soon they were conquered and Islamizied, Turks in 15th century controlled todays Greece, parts of Bulgaria, todays FYROM (then runed by Serbia's greatest hero "Marko Kraljevic") in those days Serbian lands that were surrounded by bordering Turks had good relations with Turks because they knew what will turks do to their people if they don't ;) and all lands up to Kosovo, Kosovo was a beginning of Serbian Empire all the way up to Danube, Morava and Adriatic sea...

Serbia negotiated with Turks for many years for peace, but Turks finally attacked in year 1389, whole of mighty Ottoman empire was at that battle even the Ottoman Sultan and his sons controlling his two wings :) and on Serbs side was Bosnian Emperor Tvrtko, and all of the Serbs, except the Islamiziede Serbs (from todays FYROM) who fought with Turks...

So the battle was won by the Turks but the important thing was that all Serbs knowing they will die came to field to die for Christianity and Serbia ;) even tho Turks won, they lost their Sultan and many soldiers, so they couldnt conquer Serbia yet! but eventually they did...

Serbia under Ottoman empire found it self in terror, people were made to change their religion or to die... and Serbs even payed Taxes in blood, those where taxes of any other, they came in every Serbian home and took small children to Istambul and they made them Janissary's, and then sent THEM to kill their own people... (I strongly recommend for everyone to somehow by this book and reed it, its very good, its called "Na Drini Cuprija")
In that time Ottomans created new regions in Balkans, and they even made Kosovo region and settle them with Islamic Albanians (you see Albania was surrounded with Turks so they had to convert in great numbers to Islam and they became even worse then Turks, as for Serbs they bordered Hungary on north so they had where to take shelter, and keep their religion, as Magyars are well known for being good people (well mostly :D).

One day Serbs couldn't take Ottoman rule anymore, and Ottomans weren't that strong as they used to be so Serbs fought for their independence in two Serbian Uprisings :) then Bulgarians got freedom, the Greeks (don't really know the order how it went), but the main thing was that Albania was still under Ottomans, cause Albanians like the Turks and didn't want them to leave... So Ottomans still controlled territories that where mostly Islamic ;)
those were:
Sandzak, Kosovo, Macedonia(FYROM), Bosnia, Albania, Western Greece, Southern Bulgaria...
And Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and then Balkan Wars started, because Serbia (with Montenegro), Bulgaria and Greece wanted to chase out the Turks from Balkans for good! so Serbia got back Kosovo, Macedonia (FYROM) and northern Epirus, and half of the Sandzak, the other half went to Montenegro and Skadar lake with surroundings went to Montenegro to! Bulgaria mostly looked like today greece to but with south Epirus, still Turks controlled Edrine and Istambul... Bulgars and Greeks wanted those territories as Bulgars wanted Macedonia too (FYROM) so Turks were left alone but Second Balkan war started... Serbia (+Montenegro), Romania and Greece against Bulgaria. When Bulgaria capitulated they all went on table to settle the new lands :) Italy was against Serbia (little Russia) getting a Sea so they created Albania under German rule ;) those were the days of Balkans Nationalists arousing as in whole Europe :) thats why WW1 started and WW2 in those wars Albania some how started to strengthen, but much later then other states... and when communist Yugoslavia was formed and its capital was Belgrade, Tito noticed that Serbs have too much land (Serbia, Vojvodina, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia) and Croatia and Slovens are just to small for them and communists alway eager for equality, so Tito created "Bosnians", "Montenegrins", and even "Macedons" :crazyeye: (you see they are everything but Macedons, they are mixture of Serbs and Bulgars, "Macedons" where until WW2 speaking Serbian, but Tito put in their schools Bulgarian language) and Serbia with Kosovo and Vojvodina is still too big, so he made them Autonomous and he allowed Albanian refugees to settle in Kosovo to get the balance... and every Serb that noticed what he was doing and if he said something against it he was sent to jail on Croatian Island, something like Alcatraz but communists... ;)

And when Tito died the hell went loose, Serbs wanted over night their lands back... but you all know what happened

so you see the Faith is somehow always against us, but you all know the sayings "the table will turn" ;)

Kosovo is going to become Europe's new "poor man" they are hardly bigger than Rhode Island. I swear, now all these tiny countries are going to show up and a giant company is going to claim every one, one by one.

Kosovo can do whatever they want...I believe in self determination.

...Although I do sympathize with the Serbs' position, to a point. They use the example of if Texas or California seceded because there were so many Mexicans, the rest of America would be outraged. It's a valid point.

 You know, neither Romania nor East Germany were part of the USSR....

This is so funny. :rotfl:

to a lot of westerners the USSR went from Stettin to Vladivostok. ridiculous I know, reading a map isnt that hard, but whaddayagonnado.

Kosovo : 10,887 km², that 2.5 times bigger than Rhode Island (4,000 km²), and 6 times bigger Rhodes Island (1,400 km²).

lol! Nice little 'story', thats probably what your parents teach you when you're kids

Cradle of Serbia because of this battle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kosovo

"The Battle of Kosovo continues to be regarded as a milestone in the formation and construction of Serbian national identity"

my parents aren't obsessed with history and nationality as your parents probably are ;)

we know where we came from and we know who we are and we know whats our territory ;) no matter what you or anyone else says

Nether are my parents, or me for that matter, but I just find some comments here by you hilarious, especially that one with the caucasian Albania and Sicily's mafia, obviously someone had to put it right.

Oh and yeah, we know where we're from and who we are too, and we know what Kosovo means to us, unlike some guy who lives in the most northern part of Serbia.

EDIT: And yeah, the history of this place is much more complicated than that fairytale you put there...

if anyone read the history of Kosovo, he can see that when Albanians came they always seem to take the Kosovo when they can, and we always bring it back ;) and Albanians always took Kosovo when evil arrived ;) (Ottomans, WWI, WWII) and we always drove the conquerors back and took the Kosovo back :) this time is no different, USA is the major power and its puppet EU, and they are taking our Kosovo your celebrating but we shall take it back one day ;)
