Mon 18/02/08 - A day after Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leadership made its historic declaration of independence from Serbia, the new country anxiously awaits reactions from around the world.
EU ministers struggled to forge a common stance during a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday Drafting a unified statement was very tricky. Britain, France, Belgium and Germany said they would go ahead with recognition quickly. Spain, Greece, Romania, Cyprus and Slovakia are reluctant to recognise Kosovo as an independent nation. They fear that Kosovo's unilateral declaration could encourage separatists elsewhere in Europe.

Belgium is to officially recognise Kosovo soon.

A draft statement put forward by Spain called Kosovo's secession a one-off given its history of "conflict, ethnic cleansing and humanitarian catastrophe" in the 1990s at the hand of Serbia. Its adoption would be important, as it would make it possible for many EU nations to recognize Kosovo's independence as an exception to the rule of "territorial integrity" of nations under international law.

Peacekeeping force remains in Kosovo for now

NATO's command in Brussels issued a statement Monday saying its 16,000 peacekeeping force would remain engaged in Kosovo unless the U.N. Security Council decides otherwise.

my country just did :)

Kosovo belongs to Serbs because of international law. The only way for Kosovo to become independant is recognition of world community.

USA is not equal to world community. :)

no, but the usa, france, germany, uk, italy, turkey and australia etc. are at least a significant part of it, like it or not...

Could someone launch an invasion on them now?

So now Kosovo belongs to Serbs just because of some religious beliefs?
Kosovo was always Serbia's, yeah sure, I wonder where they were before the 5th-7th century... certainly not in Kosovo ;)

here is where Serbs where before that time, and look to the east where Albanians are? there's you connection to Chechen's! And we came down in 7th century and Byzantines made us Orthodox Christians and we made our first temples in Raska, Kosovo and Macedonia (FYROM) and even in northern Greece ;)

Albanians migrated later to Sicily there they adopted "Family clans" "Mafioso's". But they had to migrate to Balkans because of "Normans" that occupied Sicily in that time... so they settled on Epirus (today's Albania) and they just went on spreading...

Albania wouldn't even exist if there wasn't for the Italians rejecting the idea for Serbia to have access to the sea ;)

And don't let me remind you all how big was "Dusans Empire"

So where do you see connections with Albanians and Illyrians? where there are big evidence that Albanians are from Caucasus...

So you want me to start that debate all over again? No matter what I post, you'll reject everything, so I won't even try but I fail to see how a modern map with the name Albania in the Caucasus proves we come form there...

As I said eariler, they went on to break all kinds of international laws in the 90s, and now they expect that international law is gonna save them?

You have no rights to break law, whatever Serbians has done.

Yeah, lol, so what law did we break? And who's going to punish us for that one? The world police?

From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_Albania
Caucasian Albania, also known as Alvank in Armenian,[1][2] Ardhan in Parthian, Arran in Persian,[3] and Al-Ran in Arabic,[1][3] was an ancient kingdom that existed on the territory of present-day Republic of Azerbaijan and southern Dagestan. The name "Albania" is Latin, and denotes "mountainous land";[2] the contemporaneous native name for the country is unknown.[4]

Albanians migrated later to Sicily there they adopted "Family clans" "Mafioso's". But they had to migrate to Balkans because of "Normans" that occupied Sicily in that time... so they settled on Epirus (today's Albania) and they just went on spreading...
So how exactly did they just go from Azerbaijan to Sicily and become Mafiosos? Sorry but this is the first time I ever heard this theory, and it smells an awfull lot like Serbian propaganda.

Well that and all the Albanians living there.

And don't let me remind you all how big was "Dusans Empire"
So should we remind you of the Roman or Bulgarian Empires who ruled the area before Dusan?

So where do you see connections with Albanians and Illyrians? where there are big evidence that Albanians are from Caucasus...
There's a pretty big article on wiki with plenty of references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_Albanians

Par this is nothing personal for me, but you should probably accept that your country have pretty biased history books.

Yes!!! Yes!!! A million times yes!

Vive le Kosovo!!! Vive la independence!!!!

I was very exicted when Montenegro became independent, but now I'm even more happy that Kosovo is independent!!!!

WOOT!!!!WOOT!!!!WOOT!!!!WOOT!!!!

Congrats, Kosovars! You did it!!!!!

Maybe Vojovodina will revolt now??

This sets a precedent for all downtrodden peoples of the world:)!

Next, let's see a Basque, Tibetan, Kurdish, Assyrian, Uyghur, Manchu, Naxi, Turkoman, and Chechnyan State!!! Vive la indepence!!!!!!!!!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

This one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_integrity

Declaration of independence was unlawful. Kosovo will not be independant state until UN council (and, desirably, Serbia) recognize it.

And from that article, I get this:

In recent years there has been tension between this principle and the concept of humanitarian intervention under Article 73.b of the United Nations Charter "to develop self-government, to take due account of the political aspirations of the peoples, and to assist them in the progressive development of their free political institutions, according to the particular circumstances of each territory and its peoples and their varying stages of advancement"[1] Territorial integrity and humanitarian intervention collided in the Kosovo War.

See what the problem is? There is a flaw in that law because you can't just sit there and watch as people are being killed and forced to flee their home just because of international law.

Let a nation which only has 2 million people,
Technology from the early 2000's
With no Sea access and a large border with their enemy Serbia
Who is not going to let go of Centuries old Serbian Lands
With no clear cut allies
Whose Economy is very bad
With no hope of joining the UN

become indepedant? Are you joking?

Vatican City has 900 people!
Umm.....we're in the early 2000s........
Plenty of countries are landlocked and border enemies
Turkey controls the Ionian islands and Ephesus!
The US is Kosovo's ally
They're economy can improve (Latvia's did!)
Of course it has hope of joining the UN! Montenegro did!

Kosovo deserves a chance to succeed and not be under the control of Serbia, who committed ethnic cleansing and war crimes against their people.

Vive le Kosovo indépendant!

Is that a fact or just your view?

It's true
Serbian attack to defend themself from albanian islamic terrorists
What serbians have done is simply self-defence

you're right, you should add Czeck republic to that list of insignificant countries

AFRICA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! CZECH REPUBLIC RULEZ!!!!!!!!

So now Kosovo belongs to Serbs just because of some religious beliefs?

So USA should be sioux, shouldn't it?

As I said eariler, they went on to break all kinds of international laws in the 90s, and now they expect that international law is gonna save them?

Milosevic, and not serbian people. broke the international rule. Actual Serbian have nothing to do with Milosevic. Serbia is simply a secualr democratic republic who don't recognize the rebel republic of Kosovo

If Serbia invades Kosovo, it will be legitimate!

Yes!!! Yes!!! A million times yes!

Vive le Kosovo!!! Vive la independence!!!!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I imagine you're albanian:rolleyes: .....

How did Normans all the way from Normandy come to Sicily? and how did vandals from todays western Poland came to todays Hungary and went to France then Spain Then Northern Africa to Carthage and then by Sea to Rome...

Fall of Rome caused massive Barbarian tribes migration to the rich lands of south ;)

Sicilians were known by their intensive family clans that later involved in Mafiosos, Albanians being there for a short time pick that up ;) and Albanian language sound a bit like an Italian (a bit)

Montenegro was a Country before Yugoslavia and in Yugoslavia it was a Republic... Kosovo has never been a country and in Yugoslavia it was an Autonomous province of Serbia ;)
