Albanians from Kosovo already have their own country. Its a bit to the south, not very far away.

going by that reasoning, Switzerland doesn't have the right to exist either :(

I want all downtrodden ethnic groups to have their own state!

Free Tibet, Assyria, Xinjiang, Kurdistan, KOSOVO, etc. etc.

if a large enough majority of people in a region want to be independent then why shouldnt they become independent, if the scottish independence movement ever gains proper majority support i think then they should get independence, i dont think anyone in england has any reason why they shouldnt

What if immigrants of some nationality declare independence in historical part of England? And other countries will bomb you to force you to release them?

No he just doesn't know what hes talking about

No because swiss haven't stolen switzerland from another country ;)

Geneva should belong to France!

(So yeah, they did steal it from a country)

Please don't start the typical whining hystorical denial debate

Switzerland was born by Holy Roman Germanic Empire and it was recognized by All European Countries at Vestfalia Peace 1648 after a long war

That's the difference
Swiss conquered their independence by fighting for freedom like USA or Mexica
Kosovo hasn't fight anything and it is illegal

You're lame as always, this time even more :p

Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Monaco etc. are not really countries, you can't compare them with countries like Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech rep. or even Luxembourg. They exist as relict of the medieval feudal system.

Andorra and San Marino look more "viable" than Belgium if you ask me
And the point you made was that those countries do not have any really weight on the international scene because they are too small. True. But fact is Czeck Republic is not that influential on the international scene neither. It may hurt your nation's feelings but it's the truth :D

Switzerland declared itself independent from its ruler of the house of Habsburg. They were ethnic germans, so it's not like there was no country for them. The main difference was that they had no powerful allies so that Habsburg tried to take their land back by force...the US was similar. So basically all that's now needed to make the scenaria the same is for Serbia to take Kosovo back by force and fail, and I sure hope it doesn't have to come to that.

It's a speare with two ends...
I re-question it. Do you recognise any territory that what to be as nation? Like South Odessia, Bascos, Tibete, ... ?

I am not educated enough on the matter to have an opinion. Having said that let me ask a question I am honestly curious about.

Do we need more small nations? Isn´t the trend leaning towards unifying diverse cultures instead of breaking them apart into fractions of them? Well, there are both trends, apparently. But I have the inkling that small (even tiny) states need to have their very own, specific niche in order to provide what their citizens need. Am I wrong (I am often enough)?

Nope, In-fact I recently read that a majority of English want Scotland to be independent. "Screw the ungrateful b*stards" mentality ;) .

there thats pretty much it, they get free university education, we dont amongst other things so we kinda resent it that dont make much of a contribution economically so we have to pay their way, i think they said if scotland became independent scots would end up paying an extra £3000 in taxes a year each

I'd bet that if Canada recognised Kosovo, Quebec separatists would go insane.

Yes, I guess. If Kosovo held a referendum to decide if they should be independent, part of Serbia, or part of Albania, mandated by the UN (though Russia would never let that pass as long as Serbia isn't a choice), then yes. I wonder why they don't proclaim a willingness to join the motherland and become an Albanian province instead. However, US education tends to skip over the Balkans except for Greece and Macedonia, and it really sucks.
