Do you think an expansion will add a whole new layer of strategy?(BTS)Or do you think

I hope if they make an expansion they focus on giving more depth to diplomacy and expand upon the city state mechanics.

I'm pretty sure there will be some new (or even resurrected Civ 4) concepts in an expansion. I do not remember the source, so I can not prove my claim, but I do remember an interview where a member of Firaxis stated, that the basic CiV game will be just this: a basis to build up a more comlex game on it.

If this statement is still true, we possibly can expect some interresiting features...

If this will be espionage (and I don't think it's unlikely!), I am still hoping for something like this concept, I proposed some time ago.

I do hope you are correct in what you heard. That is exactly what I would love to see. Lately, I have been playing Empire Total War, which has infinite more depth than CiV. Granted it is a completely different game design, but they could make CiV so much more interesting than it is at this point. In empire when I deal with diplomacy it is so much more enthralling, you feel like your actually doing business with another country. In CiV diplomacy feels so characterless, spiritless, stale. In empire there are events that occur, new inventions spring up. towns appear, you feel part of a growing interesting world, which draws you into the game, and addicts you. In CiV the game is more frustrating many times than fun. Nothing surprising happens other than a huge army coming through the fog of war, blindly tearing into your territory from some AI faction with a bone in its teeth. But you can never truly figure out why its mad at you. I do hope they change CiV over time it hopefully coming up will be a truly great game.

BTW Deggial I also agree with your ideas on espionage for CiV, you have a well thought out workable plan there. Firaxis should indeed have a look at your plan.

With gold so important vI hope there will be a option of hiring mercenaries..

They could change the civilization germany and make it a civilization specialised in mercenaries ...

As soon as you hit a certain technology probably in the renaissance or earlier you can buy with gold these units important you can't built them but only purchase them for a high price but they are stronger then regular units in that era.

of melee/ range and mounted mercenaries.

I have never seen this in any civ..

Have you played RFC for Civ 4? It has something like you are describing, it is an interesting mechanic.

I reckon if there was an expansion pack, it would add something positive to the strategic level of the game; this would be what would be necessary to separate it from just more DLC. Whether they'll go that route, or the DLC route, who knows.

There would be new strategic options for sure. We've already gotten a lot of scenarios and civs through DLC, so I would expect a BTS-style expansion as opposed to Warlords, where there were only a few changes.

I think it will likely be a DLC, as that is a model that has proved to work for them... however, I think the content will be different to the normal DLCs, and offer something similar to the BTS expansion, rather than just a large version of current DLCs.

What it will contain is anyone's guess... spying, imho, was never particularly good in cIV, and religion is another possibility, but I'm really hoping they come up with something new, something that will really interest us, something that will take the game to another level. I think the potential is there for this.

Yeah I agree. But the thing is if they applied changes via DLC, extra features and so on, then it would essentially be a mod, would it not? If they were going to expand the game, they would either overwrite the old game, or they would have to make a standalone expansion. Like what is happening with Shogun Total War 2, and the new upcoming standalone expansion Fall of the Samurai. So, if they used DLC for the expansion, it would just be a mod. To play with changes you would have to play that certain mod. I do not think they'll use DLC for the expansion. I bet it will be a standalone expansion and that is also how it should be done.
