[DoC] Persia: Dawn of a Nuzlocke

They seemed to make your rival increasingly underwhelming in each subsequent iteration of pokemon. At least from blue to emerald. I haven't played any further than that so I'm not sure if they made your rival even lamer.

In Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, your rival is nearly as competitive as Blue (he always beats you to getting gym badges, etc) but he isn't a jerk and he also helps you fight Team Galactic.
In Heartgold/Soulsilver, your rival is the same as Gold/Silver.

In Black/White, your rivals are Cheren and Bianca. Cheren is super competitive and seeking power, and even manages to defeat the Elite 4 (right after you), and also helps you beat Team Plasma. Bianca isn't super competitive, but she finds out that she's best at being a researcher and becomes Professor Juniper's assistant. In my opinion, the Black/White rivals are the best designed, because they have a large significance to the story and also have some character development.

In Black 2/White 2, your rival has anger issues and hates Team Plasma for stealing his sister's Purrloin. His lines are hilarious, but I think he's a little too one-sided as a character.

In X/Y, your rival's a complete pushover and is terribly designed.

Good update. I personally liked the Gen 3 reference with Wally

Thanks!

Yeah, this is Emerald, so I have to fit him in somewhere... The final fight with him was quite nerve-wracking.

"Conqueror of Babylon! Do you need help getting back to Sirajs?" asked Sailor Briney. He had just offered to provide transportation in his boat down the Tigris River.

"Yes, I have been ordered to give a letter to Cyrus. He's investigating a cave near Chogha Zanbil, and General Norman needs to inform Cyrus of something urgently," replied Random.

"Alright then, let's hop on my boat! Let's go, Peeko!" said Briney.

~

Random was starting to get extremely bored on Briney's very slow boat, and he was looking for something to do. Briney suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

"Have you heard about the recent invasion of India? General Winona led several raids in the south, and General Juan had led the main army attacking Dilli. In fact, just yesterday, I heard that Dilli had fallen and Juan was marching onto Pataliputra," said Briney, trying to strike up a conversation.

"Of course! Norman told me last night that a messenger Wingull had sent news that Pataliputra has fallen!" responded Random.

"It seems that Cyrus really has lived up to his promise of creating a new world empire with Dialga and Palkia the power of his ambition and the Persian military," boasted Briney.

"Indeed!" exclaimed Random as he walked back to his room.

Random was now extremely curious to see what the letter was. His father had never explicitly told him not to open it, so...
Random carefully opened the letter, breaking the seal extremely finely so Omnibian could reseal it. His jaw immediately gaped when he read the letter.

Great Cyrus,

Hannibal has accepted our deal to teach us better farming techniques in exchange for spreading the word about the philosophy of only worshiping Arceus. However, the Phoenician city of Sur, long chafing from not being the capital of Hannibal's large mercantile empire, has declared independence from Carthage's influence, declaring hostility towards the idea of only worshiping Arceus instead of worshiping all of the varied Legendary Pokemon of Water. As you are the Emperor, I am unsure of whether to try to capitalize on this declaration of independence by invasion. What is your order on this?

Secondly, another civilization, Greece, has beaten us to the construction of an Oracle to foretell future technology. We were only able to sell the materials for extra money, and we have now began construction of a grand gate to commemorate the conquering of Babylon to cow our enemies into submission. I am pleased to announce that we have finished with that construction, and it should greatly aid in our efforts to subdue India.

Thirdly, a Great General by the name of Brawly has risen to commanding a unit of Chariots. In addition to being the new Gym Leader of Chogha Zanbil, which you probably know already, he also is extraordinarily great at hit-and-run attacks, being able to retreat 80% of even the most difficult battles.

Additionally, our work force has been largely successful in constructing a road from Sirajis to Dilli. They have finished the section of the road in Persia and are now about to begin construction in India. This will greatly facilitate the movement of troops east to India.

Lastly, beliefs that Greece constructed the Oracle were made nearly certain when Pericles, their leader, received our delegation to negotiate technology trades. We managed to gain knowledge of Metal Casting (which the Oracle probably showed them), and we will begin construction of a great statue soon.

Glory to Arceus,

Norman, General of the Immortals and Normal-Type Specialist

Those were some interesting developments in foreign relations that Random had not anticipated. As Omnibian resealed the letter shut, Random heard knocking on his door.

"We've arrived in Chogha Zanbil. Let me know when you want to continue to Sirajis," said Briney. Random, hearing this, burst out the door and kissed the ground.

"Finally, land! No more seasickness for the near future!" he yelled as he walked towards the large cave looming nearby.

~

Thallid was quite intimidated by the cave. He was only used to the openness of the forest and the grassy routes. The dark, closed crowdedness of the cave scared him. He felt that out of the shadows, some monster could jump out and he would be trapped. Thallid's fear of dark, crowded spaces were confirmed by the Makuhita standing over him.

"Help!" screamed Thallid as the rest of Random's team rushed to help him.

"Whoah! I'm not here to beat you up! It's clear that you're looking for something. I also need protection from the increasing amount of Zubats here. Being a Fighting type, I don't exactly get along well with either Flying or Poison types..."

"Hello. I'm Omnibian, and our trainer is looking for somebody. Did you happen to see any humans passing through this cave recently?" asked Omnibian.

"Yes, as a matter of fact, he was here just a few hours ago! I could even lead you to where he is. My name is Kamahl, by the way. Pleased to meet you," answered Kamahl.

After a long trek, Random and his team finally made it to the deepest part of the cave.

"This is where the man went to. Happy to have helped you," said Kamahl as he started to wander off.

"Wait! Don't leave! You could travel with us as part of our team! It would be great!" exclaimed Thallid. Kamahl paused.

"That doesn't sound half bad, given how the quality of life is going down here," answered Kamahl, "I will join your team."

"Great, that makes a full six!" said Omnibian happily.

"Alright team, let's go deliver the letter to Cyrus," ordered Random as he walked into the deepest chamber.

"Random! Great to see you! I see that you have the letter for me. Is that right?" asked Cyrus.

"Yes, here it is," answered Random as he handed the letter over. Cyrus read the letter quickly, clearly seeming pleased by the news. He hastily scribbled a reply, then shook his head.

"Thank you very much for delivering this to me in person. Normally, Norman would use a Wingull, but they are bad with caves, and I needed to investigate things in here for a while. However, I think I'm done now and I can use a Wingull to deliver the return message," said Cyrus, "take this TM as your reward. Also, I'd recommend you challenge the local gym. Brawly, the brilliant general, is the Gym Leader, and he specializes in Fighting-type Pokemon. I'll leave the cave with you."

Random looked at the TM. It was for Steel Wing, which was unfortunately useless at the time. He then walked out the chamber behind Steven.

"Oh yes, one more thing. You should probably hear some recent news. Pataliputra, the last Indian city, has fallen, though not without casualties, and the Maurya Empire has fallen! We have also come into contact with their neighbor, the Chinese. Lastly, I better show you this new system of writing that Carthage taught us..."

"You have fought well. Though it is worth saying that I can't do much against a Dustox," said Brawly, "still, you are deserving of this Gym Badge. Here, take the Wave Badge!'"

Random smiled as he thanked Brawly. The Gym had been a piece of cake, as his Dustox demolished Brawly's Fighting-Type team.

So I got my iPad back, but the Apple Store employee was incompetent and unprofessional and didn't know how to use an iPad, so he didn't transfer all of the data. This means that I lost all of my pictures. Looks like I'll have to remember all of this...

half the fun of history is having it become distorted and misinterpreted. :)

"May! It's great to see you here!" said Random as he stepped off of Briney's boat onto the sandy shores of Slateport, "How are you?"

"I'm quite well! My work on researching Pokemon has been quite successful! I see you have 2 badges now. Quite impressive!" responded May.

"Thanks. Have you heard of the new religion that was founded in Babylon? It is called Buddhism, and was greatly inspired by a wandering monk who traveled with his Medicham," asked Random.

"Yes, I have! You were just recently in Chogha Zanbil, right? I heard a massive temple was being built there. How is the progress on that?" replied May.

"The building is magnificent! It will certainly last for ages, though the lives of many humans and Pokemon were sacrificed to finish the construction early..." said Random somewhat grimly.

"There also has been quite some news on the Indian front! A new civilization called the Tamils has risen, and a nearby city was razed to prevent it from joining them. I smell a war coming," stated May.

"Are you here to see Cyrus celebrate the opening of the Great Lighthouse?" asked Random.

"Yes, as a matter of fact, that's a big reason why I stayed here for a few extra days. I believe the ceremony starts soon!" answered May.

As the two of them walked towards the Lighthouse, they became aware of the crowds of people coming to see the opening as well. That and the towering grandeur of the Lighthouse gave them a sense of being part of something much larger than themselves.

"Can you feel it in the air? This is truly something massive that history will remember," said May.

As Random was about to speak, Cyrus interrupted by beginning his speech.

"Greetings to all! I am here to celebrate not merely the opening of the greatest lighthouse that the world has also seen, but the opening of a new era of greatness for Persia. We own all of Iran, all of Mesopotamia, all of Northern India, and we have our eyes set on the rest of the subcontinent. The building of this lighthouse announces the beginning of Persia's naval power! We will move forward to a new age where not only do we dominate the land, but also the seas! We will be the Ho-Oh flying across the sky, dominant and majestic! However, that is a long time away. Now, let us celebrate where we are and where we have came from. In a short span of time, we have gone from some nomadic tribes to a powerful empire, and we must take time in remembering and thanking those before us and those who gave their lives in service of our great civilization. And now, we have, together, created a lighthouse that will outlive all of us, and serve as a beacon not only to our ships, but also our people!"

The crowd went wild, cheering and requesting Steven to continue. However, their cheering suddenly fell to an eerie hush as a messenger ran up to Steven and whispered something. Steven began to speak again.

"I have just heard some terrible news. Greece has declared war on us, and has managed to rally armies to besiege all of our cities! This hour is dire, but we must remain calm. Our armed forces are strong, and our great generals will be able to defeat those shifty scum!"

Spoiler :

The crowd began to cheer again, but this time it was much more militant.

"I hope we know what we've gotten ourselves into," muttered Random to May.

I don't really feel like this is working out. Unless there is a swarm of "please, keep the story" comments, I'm going to put this one on indefinite hiatus.

"Very well, that seems better than this hunk of desert. We shall go there and found our grand city!" answered Cyrus. With that, the Parsi civilians, accompanied by a division of archers, started to move south.

Cyrus sighed. Chogha Zanbil had been under siege for several weeks, and he still had no news over whether Norman had made any successful counterattacks. As he affixed his seal to the last paper that needed his attention, a Wingull suddenly flew into the room with a message attached to his beak.

"Cyrus,
Counterattack successful. Enemy phalanxes defeated. Buddhist Temple whipped in Babylon to quell population and to encourage priest training. Prophet named Zoroaster was born as a result of the new priests.

Cyrus rejoiced at the first bit of news, but was displeased at the second. While he did need the temple, he didn't feel it was so urgent that it needed to be whipped (AN: I actually did need the temple whipped to get more priest specialists.)

"Ralts! Use Confusion!" yelled Wally as the rest of his unit advanced up the hill against the Greeks. The last of the Greek Pokemon fell as their trainers fled in terror and defeat. One Greek lay unconscious among the fallen bodies, his elaborate helmet and armor showing that he was Pericles, Greek Emperor.

Spoiler :

"Thank you Kyogre for this victory," murmured one of Wally's soldiers. Many of them had converted to Kyogrism, a religion founded by Zoroaster while at Varanasi. As his disciples traveled east with word of this new religion, more and more Persians had converted.

Wally did remember that Cyrus had given him, the Gym Leaders, and several other high-ranking trainers the right to negotiate a quick and even peace treaty if one of them were able to capture Pericles, as capturing and holding Pericles was about as easy as capturing a legendary Pokemon.

"You are at my mercy, Greek scum. However, because this war was long and devastating for both sides, I will offer you a neutral peace treaty, with neither side losing nor gaining any territory or money. I will even help you reach enlightenment by teaching you the secrets of Meditation. Otherwise..."

Spoiler :

Wally realized that he could not kill Pericles, as he was an Immortal and only other Immortals could kill him. He decided that it would be too much of a hassle and a risk to knock Pericles out again, drag him all the way back to Sirajis, and get him to negotiate with Cyrus.

"...my leader will make your decision much more of a loss for you. I'd advise taking this deal," finished Wally.

"You have fought well. I will agree to this treaty," answered Pericles, his voice weak and frail.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Did you hear about the discovery of a new empire, the Romans? They seem very strong, nearly as strong as the Greeks!" asked May.

"That is interesting news. It was nice seeing you, but the sun is starting to set. I better get home," answered Random.

As he got up and opened the door to leave, he suddenly walked into a military recruiter.

"War has been declared against the Tamils! All soldiers present are to report to the Barracks immediately!"
