DocT01b - Middle Ages Modified: William Wallace

I heard from Mere. She wants us to go on without her. She may join in later.

Just spent an hour plus on my FOR SG. I'm going to play this one tomorrow night. I took out Western Rome though!

At Start, 954 AD: Micromanage the cities a bit. A scientist in Lugdunum gives us a bit more overall production. And we still get HBR in 5 turns even with science at 0%. Going with 20% luxuries instead. I am launching the invasion of England after Bamburgh and Repton … each has Iron one square from the city. We really need iron in Scotland, so Bamburgh is the one I hope we can hold. Going to move our kings to Ireland to be safe.

957 AD: Armagh: Warrior->Settler. Entremont: Warrior->Archer. I go for the surprise attack. Will kill our reputation, but it is our best chance of success. We take out the English Spear and Warrior north of Cumbria. 4 Archers and a Swordsman prepared to attack Bamburgh next turn, with a Warrior (dropped by boat) screening reinforcements that might come up from the south. Meanwhile 7 swords are prepared to hit Repton.

CelticAttack.JPG

IBT: Our injured Archer north of Cumbria is taken out. A ton of workers retire into that city. Three attacks are made on our stack of Swords near Repton. We lose the first to another sword, the second promotes after getting down to 1 HP, and the third beats off an Archer. No sign of Alfred’s English army.

960 AD: Bamburgh falls to our next to last archer. I’m sure the archers can't hold the city, so I go ahead and raze it. Not sure there is much choice. We get two more enslaved workers (5 total now). I'm hoping I can build a new city on the border in a few turns and pull in the Iron with an expanded cultural boundary.

The attack on Repton was a BAD idea. It is in the hills. Only have killed two units there, and I am faced with a Veteran Spear and a bunch more underneath. I pull back to Offa's fortified dyke on the border of our lands.

IBT: We lose the red-lined Swordsman outside Repton and 1 Spear on the Welsh border. Not too bad.

963 AD: Strathclyde: Barracks->Spear. We kill the intruder into Wales, but lose a Sword in the fight.

IBT: We lose 3 units to the English. 1 in Wales. Two in the hills of southern Scotland.

966 AD: Dublin: Warrior->Warrior. Cork: Warrior->Warrior. Gwynedd: Swordsman->Swordsman. English aren’t speaking to us. I didn't think so. HBR next turn.

IBT: Looking grim. Lose 3 units to England. France then demands 20 gold in tribute (out of 22 in our account). I give in. We do get Horseback Riding! I elect to go for Norse Tradition next as per Doc’s recommendation. This war is too critical to run a deficit, and if we continue some luxuries and want to break even, even Castle Building will take 40 turns. So let's spend 40 turns on a normally more expensive tech.

We Love The King Day celebrated in Dublin. Dalraida: Spear->Spear. Alesia: Settler->Spear.

969 AD: We retreat into the cities of Strathcylde and the two in Wales, hoping to hold out. Norwegians don’t have HBR, but nothing of use to trade. Everyone else has it.

IBT: English pillage our iron in Wales but then pull back elsewhere. Saw a brief glimpse of a noble near Cumbria. The King Alfred leader, still not used?

972 AD: Armagh: Settler->Spear. Entremont: Archer->Spear. Mostly building spears now.

975 AD: Strathclyde: Spear->Spear. Dyfed: Sword->Spear.

978 AD: Have now shipped most excess forces in Ireland over to help in the defenses. We meet Burgundy, but they are up Castle Building on us.

IBT: Scads of English Sword (about 8) coming after Dyfed. Barely hold them off. Next turn looks bad. Even an English Galley sailing towards us from the Hebrides.

981 AD: Six cities finish production. I’m building Spears everywhere. Ah-ha. England will give us peace for 81 Gold and 4 per turn. I take it. It was an ugly war, but they lost a city and we didn’t. We also picked up a slew of English workers and didn’t lose any of ours. The combat casualties were in their favor though. And let's hope they don't redeclare soon.

984 AD: All quiet. Our settler occupies the former location of Bamburgh! Maybe there was a point to this war after all. Build a city next turn and we will have Iron in Scotland! Workers sent to build a road to connect it up.

Warpstorm is up!

The Save

:goodjob:

IMHO ýou got everything you need from the war, Repton or Chippenham was always out of reach...

Not really sure if HBR -> Norse pays out, CB is substantially more expensive than HBR, and that's why I prefer to research on my own; HBR only takes that long because everyone is so small in the beginning. And I always get Seafaring for HBR, so essentially I research 1 Tech and buy 2 for about 300gp total. Nevertheless, if you can afford only min Science for some more turns anyway it still should work.

Had a feeling the war would be a very tough one based on our unit production and the strength of England. Did a great job getting through this point in the game peeps.

Looking like it will get even more interesting now. Any thoughts on the approach the next group should take?

Anything you want me to continue, Gobi (other than building the city, of course)? If no particular sugs, I'll probably look into rebuilding our military. Eventually, we are going to have to take Chippenham.

Yes, rebuilding the military is what I had in mine.

Perhaps exploring a bit to meet other civs?

Not sure if the Norwegians will have anything to trade for HBR before they get it themselves, but that is another option.

We also have one more Settler and I'm not sure what to do with him. You could fit another city into Scotland. Not sure if there is any room in France.

984 AD: (Inherited) I decide to micromanage a few cities while doing my grand tour.

987 AD: Stratheclyde builds Curragh, I have it build a spearman. I decide to send the curraugh with the settler North to settle near Orkney. I send the other two boats out to explore a bit. Found Richborough at the site of the razed city. I think that a temple would be a good first build for it. I send some workers to connect it up to the net. That huge stack of English swordsmen is still on our land. Since she is furious with us I don't press her on it (yet).

IBT - Spot the evil English moving a bunch of spearmen north towards Cumbria.

990 AD: Camulodunum finishes its temple. I think another barracks in Scotland would be a good thing once we get Iron hooked up.

IBT - The furious English tell us to leave their country (I was moving a curraugh through it). I decide to invoke the better part of valor and not complain about her stack of units fortified in a fortress in our land.

993 AD: Start a few more spearmen. Hopefully, we can get Iron hooked up soon.

IBT - The English add spearmen to the SOD near our border at Gwynedd. This is a bad sign.

996 AD: We built a swordsman at Gwynedd. Since we have a fair military presence in our towns I lower luxury rate.

999 AD: Hurrah, we have Iron in Scotland! I switch a couple of spearmen over to swordsmen. I found Verulamium. I have it build a temple to help flip Orkney.

1002 AD: I upgrade a warrior to a swordman. Meet Castille. They don't have anything to trade. (We have an average army compared to them ;) )

1005 AD: Meet Germany. They don't have anything to trade.

1008 AD: A quiet turn.

1011 AD: Got another swordsman.

1014 AD: Ditto. Just about everyone has Castle Building, but we don't have anything they want.

I don't really have any recommendations at this juncture. We can't take England by ourselves (yet). It is taking forever to research at this pitiful rate, but adding to the science rate won't really help either. Diplomacy?

On the upside, looking at the military ratings on F3, we are on par with about half of them and rapidly increasing our military.

Oh, yeah, the save

The current lineup:
1. Chieftess <-- up NEXT
2. BobT <- on deck
3. Gobi Bear
4. Warpstorm

Looked over the save. Sure would be nice if the English would remove that SOD from Wales.

Floating out some ideas here. We are even with the Norwegians in military strength (according our advisor). How about attacking them in Orkney in 25 turns when we get Norse Tradition? Any hope they might submit to us and give us Seafaring as part of the peace deal?

Our military is weak compared to the English ... thought we should discuss some kind of plan other than banging our heads against them.

Got it!

@Gobi - and attack a civ that has units with 6 attack and 6 on defensive bombard??? :eek:

I do think war is in the near future though... (turns are almost done - I'm half tempted to attack the English, since we're running low on cash).

Game Save

Turn 0 - 1014AD

Put another specialist in Lugdunum to a taxman. The town's not gonna get much productive terrain anyway. Upgraded a warrior in Cornwall.

IBT: The English have added a horse to the army!

Turn 1 - 1017AD

Strath: Sword->Sword
Richborough: Temple->Sword

Contact Norway and ask him to move his wayward beserk that's been fortified since turn 1. He oblidges, and removes the poor unit, which ends up even FURTHER away

Turn 2 - 1020AD

Cornwall: Spear->Sword
Camulodunum: Barracks->Spear

I decide to change Entremont and Armagh to horses. (Longbows are a long way off - no pun intended). Right clicking the horseman army shows, "Contact Alfred the Great". Did they add their king to the army???

Turn 3 - 1023AD

Alesia: Sword->Sword

Nothing much this turn except for putting swords at the border.

Turn 4 - 1026AD

Amagh: Horse->Horse
Dalriada: Sword->Sword
Brittany: Temple->Spear
Gwynedd: Sword->Barracks
Entremont: Horse->Horse

Moved the horsemen to Gwynedd. They'll unload next turn. Hopefully, they can take a stab at that army. Upgraded another sword.

IBT: England took a spear into Cumbria.

Turn 5 - 1029AD

Dublin: Temple->Barracks

Both horsies are awoken, and moved to the sheep 2 tiles south, in direct sight of the British king. Looking at the histograph, we are actually in 3rd in score, but 4th in victory points. My curragh seems to be stuck in traffic at the mouth of the Meditteraian. Pretty messy sight... ships blaring their horns and angry sea captains (any sight of that one, certain, infamous captain? :shudders:) shouting obscenities that would get them banned on CFC. Too bad "Traffic Reports" won't be invented for another 900 years. ;)

ct_maconquest_trafficjam.jpg

IBT: Traffic jam clears.

Turn 6 - 1032AD

Dyfed: Sword->Sword
Alesia: Sword->Sword

We finally reach the Fatimid Caliphate. We have an average military compared to them! Too bad they're so far away.

IBT: Sweden wants 13g. I give in. We've met Poland, too

Turn 7 - 1035AD

Strath: Sword->Sword
Camu: Spear->Spear
Richborough: Sword->Sword

Our income starts getting low (0gpt), so I put a taxman specialist in Cornwall.

Turn 8 - 1038AD

Amagh: Horse->Horse
Dalriada: Sword->Sword

Brittany expands.

NOTE: Somehow, I noticed 2 turns later that we weren't researching. So, I went back to the turn 7 save. It looks like the scientist vanished when Brittany expanded, and the scientist probably went to work on the first. Readjusted the scientist.

Turn 9 - 1041AD
Entremont: Horse->Horse
Alesia: Sword->Sword

We're starting to run deficits, so I hire another taxman in Brittany (which is building Spears BTW. *boo* *hiss* :p). Moved the horse to Dublin, where the curragh was waiting. Moved the Curragh to Dyfed, and unloaded the horse. (don't you just love ferries!). Moved the horse onto the sheep.

Turn 10 - 1044AD

England wants to continue the peace deal. I accept. We don't want England to have the first strike... We also get our 4gpt back.

Cornwall: Sword->Sword

I almost want to take a chance with a horseman rush on Chippenham, since it seems England's king is in the army...

"Alfred the Great" is the name of the Army, I bet their Royals are still where they belong.
One thing you really should look for is a 'red' unit carrying the Relic (this unit carries a shield with 'Kill me' painted on it). And a Horseman Army is extreme luck for you; a Swordsman Army is near invincible at this stage.

That's not the king in there ... Originally I gave England a Military Leader called Alfred the Great in this scenario. However, when you could rush build wonders with leaders, we decided it was bad they could rush build Holy Roman Empire. So I changed it to an army (but still renamed it).

yeah, there's a worker building a road on the hill near the English capital.

This collection of turns was pretty much boring :)

All I did was continue on with the format we have been taking and continued to build up sword stack to the North East on our iron, and add more horses to the fortress as they come along. I have added on more currach in the build now to try to float a few more horses over for the eventual attack on England.

Still do not think it would be wise to hit the English captital with a small stack of horses, as I have watched an aweful lot of iron run around in their territory, and swords will cut our horses to bits unless we have a very sizable attack force. The stack of swords we have collected should be able to move in on England any time now and take out two eastern cities. We are now ranked average to their military and should think of making a move soon.

Save attached.

The year 1068AD

hmm, looking at the save, Rome has been razed! :eek:

Wow, back to me already. I'll take a look at the file shortly. May not have time to play until later though.
