At Start, 954 AD: Micromanage the cities a bit. A scientist in Lugdunum gives us a bit more overall production. And we still get HBR in 5 turns even with science at 0%. Going with 20% luxuries instead. I am launching the invasion of England after Bamburgh and Repton
each has Iron one square from the city. We really need iron in Scotland, so Bamburgh is the one I hope we can hold. Going to move our kings to Ireland to be safe.
957 AD: Armagh: Warrior->Settler. Entremont: Warrior->Archer. I go for the surprise attack. Will kill our reputation, but it is our best chance of success. We take out the English Spear and Warrior north of Cumbria. 4 Archers and a Swordsman prepared to attack Bamburgh next turn, with a Warrior (dropped by boat) screening reinforcements that might come up from the south. Meanwhile 7 swords are prepared to hit Repton.
IBT: Our injured Archer north of Cumbria is taken out. A ton of workers retire into that city. Three attacks are made on our stack of Swords near Repton. We lose the first to another sword, the second promotes after getting down to 1 HP, and the third beats off an Archer. No sign of Alfreds English army.
960 AD: Bamburgh falls to our next to last archer. Im sure the archers can't hold the city, so I go ahead and raze it. Not sure there is much choice. We get two more enslaved workers (5 total now). I'm hoping I can build a new city on the border in a few turns and pull in the Iron with an expanded cultural boundary.
The attack on Repton was a BAD idea. It is in the hills. Only have killed two units there, and I am faced with a Veteran Spear and a bunch more underneath. I pull back to Offa's fortified dyke on the border of our lands.
IBT: We lose the red-lined Swordsman outside Repton and 1 Spear on the Welsh border. Not too bad.
963 AD: Strathclyde: Barracks->Spear. We kill the intruder into Wales, but lose a Sword in the fight.
IBT: We lose 3 units to the English. 1 in Wales. Two in the hills of southern Scotland.
966 AD: Dublin: Warrior->Warrior. Cork: Warrior->Warrior. Gwynedd: Swordsman->Swordsman. English arent speaking to us. I didn't think so. HBR next turn.
IBT: Looking grim. Lose 3 units to England. France then demands 20 gold in tribute (out of 22 in our account). I give in. We do get Horseback Riding! I elect to go for Norse Tradition next as per Docs recommendation. This war is too critical to run a deficit, and if we continue some luxuries and want to break even, even Castle Building will take 40 turns. So let's spend 40 turns on a normally more expensive tech.
We Love The King Day celebrated in Dublin. Dalraida: Spear->Spear. Alesia: Settler->Spear.
969 AD: We retreat into the cities of Strathcylde and the two in Wales, hoping to hold out. Norwegians dont have HBR, but nothing of use to trade. Everyone else has it.
IBT: English pillage our iron in Wales but then pull back elsewhere. Saw a brief glimpse of a noble near Cumbria. The King Alfred leader, still not used?
972 AD: Armagh: Settler->Spear. Entremont: Archer->Spear. Mostly building spears now.
975 AD: Strathclyde: Spear->Spear. Dyfed: Sword->Spear.
978 AD: Have now shipped most excess forces in Ireland over to help in the defenses. We meet Burgundy, but they are up Castle Building on us.
IBT: Scads of English Sword (about 8) coming after Dyfed. Barely hold them off. Next turn looks bad. Even an English Galley sailing towards us from the Hebrides.
981 AD: Six cities finish production. Im building Spears everywhere. Ah-ha. England will give us peace for 81 Gold and 4 per turn. I take it. It was an ugly war, but they lost a city and we didnt. We also picked up a slew of English workers and didnt lose any of ours. The combat casualties were in their favor though. And let's hope they don't redeclare soon.
984 AD: All quiet. Our settler occupies the former location of Bamburgh! Maybe there was a point to this war after all. Build a city next turn and we will have Iron in Scotland! Workers sent to build a road to connect it up.
Warpstorm is up!
