DocT4-How to Rise as a Ruler (RaR Training SG)

denyd said:
Are there any resources/luxuries that we should be on the look out for that we don't already have access to on the home island?
I can't take a look on the game right now, so maybe someone else can answer this. At least plenty of luxuries can be acquired from elsewhere, I imagine.
denyd said:
Is there any reason to leave Spain in the game?
In my opinion : no. The only problem may be war weariness if we continue current war.
denyd said:
It seems like the Persians would be the next target (backward tech, isolated). Which ships would be the best for the hauling a small invasion force safely to their island?
We're now getting tech/turn -> most of larger troop hauling ships will soon be available. We already have the junk, which sails safely in the ocean.

Yes, Spain should be conquered completly. They have some nice ressources round and a lot of land which is likely to contain many of the future ressources. WW will rise and become a problem at some point (but I'm sure the war will be over and won before the point is reached our government is overthrown), but remember there is always the lux slider (which importance in RaR can be only underlined double), we have enough cash thanks democracy and we are religious, so a quick switch to a now WW-government in case there is going somthing seriously wrong wouldn't be a too big loss .

I forgot way back when, but I did sign up for this... and left. Keep me off the player list still, I need to work from scratch again. But good luck guys n keep beating RnR's a$$.

Sorry this took so long, fell asleep in a tree and caught a fever.

Looks like DocT gets to but Isabella to bed, after that, then what?

We could take a brief respite from :hammer: to settle the rest of the island and get the infrastructure up to snuff or load up a couple of turtle ships and pick on the Persians. With us being in the golden age infrastructure (particularly production boosters) would be my choice.

What would the preferred research paths be in each case? Is there a resource that we don't have that we need to target acquiring? What's the dominating offensive unit of the era? Are there any AI UU's that we might want to avoid?

Let's remember that we aim for cultural victory -> use the golden age to rush as much cultural buildings as possible. I understood from last turn log by Disenfrancised that we have nice pile of gold and steady income. Rush culture while finishing off Spain!

The roster:

DocT - UP!
Denyd - On deck
Pfeffersack
Knappagh1 - disappeared?
Tinkez
Disenfrancised - just played

First, the Save

Took some time...holidays.

Denyd:
I would normally use the GA to heavily focus on production boosters. That’s why I prefer Civs with an early MA UU, the very best time for a GA in RaR. However, sometimes you have to do something different; in DocT5 we needed units to survive, here we need culture. That especially means Theatres, or anything else with more than 1cpt that has a chnce to double in time. Opera Houses are too expensive for my taste, that’s more for 25k city culture.
Resources:
We should have everything. We have some Desert, and lots of Jungle and Tundra, so Oil and Rubber are likely. If you do not own any Jungle, it would be a good idea to get hold of some before Rubber is needed.

Tibet, 750AD

Looks really good. We obviously want more cities for a cultural victory, and I see no reason to not go against Persia once Spain is finished.
Unless we don’t want to do all research by ourselves, we should help Russia, and don’t bankrupt Korea; everyone else is worthless except as Luxury supplier.

Minor comments:
*Stay away from School of Scribes (except in the Science centres). They do not give culture.
*Ouch, ‘Emphasize Production’/’Capital is default’ isn’t turned on. Since I do not fear any flips from Spain, I hand over the resisting cities to the Governor to control mood.
*We have quite a lot cities not in WltKD (Rome for example). This causes quite a lot of waste; Rome is at 5/13 wasted shields. Better hire a Specialist in this case, or switch to a Happiness producer (Basilika here).
*We have not a single SCI improvement in our FP city; an oversight. Switch to Forbidden Gardens first (in 3).
*Since both Sikkhim and Lhasa aren’t done with culture/science improvements, I switch both to Universities; Sikkhim still lacks production boosters, and cannot really grow; so I think Shakespeare’s won’t help much, the city can easily produce more culture buildings within that time.
*In general, we’re researching too fast , we cannot keep pace with buildings. For example, we cannot put any city on Smith’s right now.

Short-rush some culture; we have quite a lot cities at 20spt; so I rush the needed shields for a Cavalier (80), and switch to Theatres (100).
We can trade for 3 more Luxuries, and I do that (in C3C, there is no upper limit of effective Luxes). Since we have Magnetism, we don’t have to worry about braking trade routes.
They most interesting thing is that the Celts did pick up the culture race; they are at 2289, with us at 5385 (noone else is above 1.5k)

Enter.
IBT:
Eco->Metallurgy (I want Leadership, especially Colonial Marines)
Abandon Zaragossa.
Many many builds finish.
Indians complete the Temple of Zeus.

Turn 1: 760AD
Kill a few Spanish units, including a Settler combo :crazyeye:.
IBT:
Metallurgy->Leadership

Turn 2: 770AD
Capture Valencia. Found Zayu (Zaragossa replacement).
WW goes up again.
Burn a lot of cash.
IBT:
The Spanish Galley we’re shadowing drops off a Settler combo next to 2 of our units clearing the Barb camp in the W of our continent.

Turn 3: 780AD
Capture Santiago. Slay the Settler combo.
IBT:
Leadership->Flintlock.

Turn 4: 790AD
We contact Japan (the missing green Civ). They don’t even have Dynasticism…but a nice junk of gold. We take it, and a WM. Hm, that’s odd; their island isn’t bad, no clue why Toku does so bad. They have 7 cities, and room for one more. Get Wool from them as well.

We capture Toledo.

Turn 5: 800AD
No cash left…
IBT:
Spanish Inquisition attacks :D – but cannot take off a single HP from a Gurkha in Valencia (that’s where Gurkhas shine; fast units cannot retreat from them).
America completes Sun Tzu’s (already obsolete for us).

Turn 6: 810AD
Capture Santander. Raze Valladolid (ugly placed, one of the coast in the mountains). Capture Palma, Spain down to 3 towns.
IBT:
Flintlock->Cav Tactics

Turn 7: 820AD
Capture Asturias.
Turn down research, nothing we need ASAP, better get some more cash.

Turn 8: 830AD
Turn 9: 840AD

IBT: We get the National Library notification.

Turn 10: 850AD
Found Jomda as foothold on the Persian island, and what’s the suggestion to build there? Roal Tournament :wall:. City is conveniently on a Hill and next to Tobacco.

NOTES (lots of ;) ):

Spain:
Didn’t finish them off so far, since I couldn’t devote too many cities to units.
And, I still hope for a MGL, that’s why I gathered all Elites.
Important: We have only a few units at Logrono, but plenty at Jaen. Attack Logrono first; if the Palace jumps there, city will get a defense bonus. If you happen to get a leader, International Port (Barga looks good).

Persia
No need to hurry there, we have lots of work to do on our landmass. But if you fight, prepare well; Democracy begs for Blitzkriegs. Marines, enough ships for Transport and Bombardment, etc. All units outside the cities on our Southern land tip wait to be shipped over. Found another city 3 W of Jomda, with access to the Whales.

Some cities deserve special mentioning:
*Leh. FP city, was at size 8 and cannot grow; irrigate/chop enough there.
*Santiago. Insane city spot, build the Summer Palace there; but rush enough boosters and happiness to get that thing up in a reasonable time.
*Gartokh. Needs a few more culture/commerce improvements, then build the MilAc there, and keep the city on Armies for the rest of the game.
*Sikkhim. Smith’s is due in currently 9; get the National Library there next.
*Gomo. Irrigate form here down to the coastal cities.
*Settler near Sikkhim: Found on that spot 1 SE of the Barb camp near Jaen.

Culture:
Keep rushing everywhere. Don’t think the game will last for much more than 1000 years, so better get Library+Academy everywhere, instead of too many Theatres/Artist Guilds. Ports/Major Ports are great, both cost no maintenance with Smith’s.

Techs:
We have everything we need, don’t hurry.
Important: Avoid Juris Prudence as long as possible, Chichen Itza will go obsolete.

I got it - Nice work Doc - I won't be able to play tonight, but should have no problems getting it done tomorrow.

I'll take a look at your notes and post any questions I might have before starting.

FYI:

I'm out of online access starting tomorrow until Sunday the 2nd of January. If my turn comes up, skip me.

I spent a couple of hours just reviewing cities for builds and citizen placement and reading the civilopedia. Will be playing tonight.

Once Spain was gone my turn-set was focused on cultural improvements then productivity additions. My focus on military was to relocate the offensive troops to Persia and to assign most of the central troops to coastal garrisons. I did not rush any improvements on my final turn (left that for who’s next as well as a pair of luxury deals).

Assuming that Knappagh1 has dropped out of this game (he has missed action the last two times he was up and we haven't heard anything of him!), it is my turn now.Got it.

My reasoning for Shakespeare was the 8 cpt it provides.

I've got a couple of colonial marines on garrison duty. We should replace them with muskets.

Sorry for the delay, I planned to play may turns yesterday evening, but don't found time.

While starting now, I wondered what to with Shakespears.I agree, it is not the best choice to build, (and especially not in Sikkim, although I think this city has growth potential later, too), but on the other hand I hate wasting accumulated shields by switching to a too cheap new project. Some suggestions what we could do (if we want to avoid overspend at all...):

- leaving Shakes for two more turns, then switch over to Sistine Chapel (ok, it brings even half the culture for beeing only 20% less expensive, but if we plan to build cathedrals everywhere -which are halfpriced since we are religious- we would get +6 happiness per cathedral)
- switching to Opera House (4t) (the fastest finish, but I don't think an OH is worth)
- switching to Enceclopedie as prebuild, to wait for a tech which brings us a wonder which is really worth to build...(we would have 24 turns to get this)
- switching production in Gartokh away from MA (cathedral 2t, for example) and setting Lhasa to MA (would take 13t to complete it).One of my prefered options, or is there a special reason why we want to have the MA in Gartokh?

Sikkhim? Lhasa? Where is it?

...Lhasa, I know, Smith's in Sikkhim.

Switch to some placeholder wonder, and wait for the Central Bank option. Rush Banks, when needed.

The next useful Wonder would be Gutenberg's. Sistine isn't worth it for us IMHO.
The MilAc thing: Yes, there is a reason. I prefer that one in a city with not too much commerce (not the Capital or a coastal city). This city is simply occupied with building Armies, and production boosters, no time to get commerce/ research as well.
And, Gartokh is almost done with everything available in the MA.
