Does Civ affect the way you talk?

A friend (fellow civer) and I are always joking about how things are impossible for us or others because technology X has yet to be discovered.

i.e.
"I can't go outside today because I haven't discovered 'anti-hangover' technology. Requires: irrigation and medecine."

Roaring laughter amongst ourselves; coughs and crickets chirping when we say stuff like that to our friends.

Are we just complete dorks, or has it happened to you too?

I'm leaning towards you guys being dorks heh sorry

I'd have to say you are dorks...but then I really enjoyed the joke so I must be one also. Oh wait, I have 1k+ posts on a fan site. I must be one! :D

The only way it has effected the way I talk is with a new word my girlfriend introduced to me - "Jonesing" - which is apparently slang for the shakes a drug addict gets when in withdrawal.

I use the word all the time now to explain my behavior to co-workers.

I was eating lunch with one of my friends, a fellow CIV3 player, and we discussed strategy and such. At one point I noticed the table of middle-aged women sitting behind my friend staring at us as if we were aliens. Of course, references to phalanxes and cavalry do probably sound odd to people who tote children around in SUVs and have blocked things like WWII out of their memories.

I vote for dorks too, but hey, that's not a bad thing....right?

I've never had it creep into my speech yet, but I keep on fighting the temptation to send my boss an email that says:

"I want: 50,000 gold per turn

take this deal or suffer!"

I don't think she'd get it....

Over here, at least in my area, "Jonesing" is a more general hunger for a particular thing. Thus, here at work, I'm jonesing for some Civ 3 action. In your example, the addict would be jonesing for some heroin.

There's also a quite decent line of soft drinks by a company called "Jones Soda," which has led to the ridiculous situation of my friend saying "I'm really jonesing for some Jones." I apologize for us Americans. :D

Civ 3 might infect my slang, at least among my friends who also play. I think it's too soon to tell, and I can't really remember since it's been so long since we played Civ 2 (we were a SMAC crowd from that point on). I did, however, order the "My Words Are Backed With Nuclear Weapons" beer stein from Apolyton, and I drink exclusively from that when playing Civ 3. So perhaps my behavior has been affected.

Jones Soda rocks! I just wish they'd start making their vanilla cola again. That stuff was awsome.

I don't know about apologizing for us americans about that...given the German's preoccupation with David Hasslehof, and the Canadians 'gifting' us with alanis morrisette....I figure that all works out pretty evenly.

Has not affected my speech yet, but I was wondering the other day how long it will take for Toronto to accept our culture and become assimilated into the U.S. :)

My daughter came in to wake me up the other morning and I asked her for just 5 more turns, just 5 more....

Giorgicus : Toronto has accepted your culture...and on behalf of the rest of Canada...you can have them...but the'll probably want to be their own state and have like 5000 electoral votes. But we all know that you just want them so that you can say that the US has never lost a world series...(It certainly isn't for that ugly tower). (Sorry to the Torontonians...I was just kidding, eh?)

To the originator...

You arn't a dork...you were just still under the influence of the alcohol. And if you were a dork, who cares, better that than a mundane tv watching zombie, or a job-obsessed yuppie who just tries to keep up with the Joneses...

Heh...sorry for the extra Jones thing...I couldn't help it...

Of course. Just the other day there was a discussion at school about government types. I said Democracy was the best since citiens generate one additional commerce. Surprisingly someone knew what I was talking about/

Since I'm the only one in my circle of friends who civs, I haven't had an opportunity to use any Civ slang. I do dream about civving and SMACing all the time. I mostly dream that I'm living on Planet, and the like.

I have been trying to Convert those closest to me, as I was Converted. My brothers hooked me on the original Civ about nine years ago. I then brought Civ2 for my twin sister, but she didn't bite. I'm now trying to Convert my mum with SMAC. She's showing some interest...

 The game hasn't really affected my speach, but because of Civ1, I actually thought the Great Wall of China was one of the REAL "seven wonders!" By the way, which wonder did the wall replace? I forgot...

Here's the correct list: The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Colossus of Rhodes, and The Lighthouse of Alexandria.

As you can see, three of these are different from the Civ wonders. They were replaced by The Great Wall, The Oracle, and The Great Library.
