Well does it?

I have a screaming machine, two months old, all the latest drivers, super video card, 8gig of ram, etc.

Yet I still have to play CiV in dx9 because anything else doesn't even start. Just does a hard lock on my PC and I have to reboot.

It's 2012 and they can't get dx10 to work? It's sad. Sad and frustrating.

Why do I have the feeling you are about the only person with that problem? In any way it definitely is a problem related to your PC, not the game. Post a dxdiag after asking to move this thread to the technical support subforums as a start if you seek help on that matter.

Also, I'm not sure how we'd be able to tell you whether a bug has been fixed in a game that has not yet been released.

The fact that you have a tech problem with the game doesn't necessarily mean the game as a whole has a problem.

I've never had a problem with the Dx 10/11 Civ V in roughly 1000 hours of playing.

Even new and smoking hot computers can have tech issues. Live up to your forum username and solve it. :P

I emailed Take 2 tech support and they EMAILED ME BACK TEN DAYS LATER AND OBVIOUSLY DIDN"T UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

How hard to understand is 'when I click on DX10/11 my PC hard locks?'

To the helpful gentlemen who said 'oh, you have an nvidia card', WRONG. AMD Radeon HD6970 with 2gig of memory.

DXDIAG says I have no problems.

From the consensus of problems here, it relates to the video card most likely. So far no one has had trouble with motherboards, cpu's, or memory. Most problems relate to the GPU itself. The reason that Nvidea was mentioned, is because there has been a rash of 560 GT cards that are causing problems. There is some kind of problem with DX11 that the new cards are having difficulty as opposed to the older ones from a year+ ago. The problem has not been solved yet, at least not in this forum.

I have the Nvidea 550M for laptops which is as new as one can get, and I have no trouble whatsoever.

You have two options: Wait for a resolution or try another GPU.

I cannot say that you have a defective card and ask you to get another one of the same type, because I cannot say if it is just that card or the type of card that is causing the trouble. Until we get someone here who has solved the problem presented by the newer cards, we need all the info to at least try and connect the dots.

Make sure under Gaming and Application Settings in the Driver software (CCC) everything (where applicable) is set to "use application settings", "standard" or "performance".

A dxdiag doesn't really tell you if you have a problem. Most of the time people say it is cool though, it is not.

What GPU are you running?

I remember this being a fairly widespread problem after one of the earlier patches but it's pretty rare since then. Hate to ask, but are you running the latest version (1.0.511)? If you are then I would suggest running the most recent DirectX 9.0c end-user runtime to make sure your libraries are up to date. It may seem counter-intuitive but DX9 and below are actually retroactively supported by DX 11 (which is native to Win 7) and so problems with out of date 9.0c libraries can cause problems even when running applications in "DirectX 11 mode". If that doesn't work running repairs to your .Net and C++ redistributables can also help. These things are all simple to do and would rule out the most common issues if nothing else.

The DirectX 9.0c end user runtime reinstall fixed this. Thanks for the great tip. I've tried to fix this so many times before and never got it working till now.

Just in case that doesn't work on other I had that so I uninstalled steam then I reinstalled it (P.S don't uninstall civ 5).
