Does the AI buy land tiles?

I was wondering how often the AI purchases stuff with gold, like buildings and units since I never see them do it ofcourse.. and more importantly... do they ever buy tiles? There are plenty of situations were I would think that the AI would be smart to buy tiles but if they don't then I think it's pretty strange the ability is there at all.

And yes if it's strategic to do so. I had a Civ purchase a tile which stopped me getting 2 units back to my side of the continent yesterday. He did it because he could....

It does happen, but to be honest I've seen the AI using its Great Generals to Citadel-bomb tiles more often.

What does irritate me is that the AI always seems able to tell when the player has bought tiles - hence the little warning they like to give if you do it near their borders - but I can't for the life of me work out how. Sometimes it's obvious when land has been bought - if the city has only just been settled - but if it's been there a while and you buy only one tile, how can they know that it wasn't just your borders expanding?

Because the AI sees where your mouse cursor is.. I mean, it's not another human, it's the AI, it is within the Civ 5 game it's not like it has a mind of it's own it's just a bunch of codes.

So when a the code detects that the human player has used the "purchase" tile, it sends this to the AI, which it then processes as an aggressive expansion and thus sends you the warning.

it always boggles my mind that AIs are always ahead of me in most aspects.so terrifying

Had you researched Iron Working yet? There's a possibility that it just culturally expanded out to some iron :)
