With the discussion on Canada, I'm pretty curious if the AIs are able to declare formal wars or something more interesting.

Since the last patch, I've been dragged into wars only via alliances. My ally getting war declared on them by a third power. Prior to that, it would only happen very rarely and it would usually happen after a denunciation.

Your title (Vote for me or die) reminds me I better go vote today.

Ah yes, defensive pacts. In those cases I'm never sure who was declared on; I always assumed I'm the one declaring to honor it.

Mostly just early game. Medieval at the latest. Generally I either way outclass them by then or I'm playing a good guy diplo game and am friendly with everyone.

But it is almost every single game.

I've had very few wars declared after the last few patches. It seems like they NEVER declare war against the other ai though.

"Yes" and "no" aren't answers to "how often?". :p

It's usually a surprise war when directed at me. Formal wars are used on a joined wardec.
I prefer to play peacefully and try to ally with my neighbors so it's not very often directed at me. Most wars are indirect through alliances.

I get declared on in almost every game and it's always a surprise war from the first Civ that meets me. The one exception is I denounced Canada one time because he had an unescorted settler and I wanted it. 5 turns later he has an army outside of my capital, declares a formal war, and proceeds to end my game.

Q: So how often does the AI declare war on you?
A: Yes/No.

:crazyeye:

I cannot answer this poll

With the latest patch I saw funny thing with barbarian clans mode. Two AIs declared war on me and after some time I realized that they has some "issues" with their territory. When armies tried to destroy me 3 or 4 clans decided to do the same to them and were very good at it :) In fact until clans civilized they were very annoying even for me.

Its almost always a surprise war early in the game; classical or sometimes medieval

I end up declaring protectorate wars a lot myself

Mostly surprise wars in the early eras (up to Medieval). They might denounce me later on but never actually proceed to declare war.

On deity, if that's a factor

Surprise wars in the early eras. It's rare enough for me to get declared on in the later game that I don't remember what CB they typically use (if any).

Which is a huge part for me why the lategame often feels so boring. Nothing dramatic tends to happen, and if someone does declare a war, they never manage to accomplish anything.

I can categorically say that I've never had a proper CB used against me. I don't remember having a formal war declared against me, although it's possibly that it has very rarely and I've just forgotten. Almost always or always have had surprise wars, pretty sure it's always been ancient or at the latest classical. I'm not sure if that's specific to the code or if it's just that my military usually starts getting stronger by then and just deterring the AI - I tend to neglect it in the ancient era and only get stuff towards towards end of the classical.

It's almost always a surprise war and it's usually the first 50 turns or nothing. I used to see formal wars after being denounced, but I can't recall the last time that's happened. It's pretty easy to get the AI to like you as the game goes on longer with trade deals, trade routes, delegations/embassies, and only forward settling them once resulting in a kept promise.

Usually play emperor (some immortal) and I get at least one surprise war most games, early on, unless I’m playing archipelago or something and have no immediate neighbors. Even in games where the whole world hates me for the whole game, it’s very rare to get a later-game war declared; I guess usually those are where I’m hated for early war myself, so maybe it’s a function of military strength.

It feels like, if I share a continent with a civilization, there is going to be a surprise war from them eventually no matter what (within the first 200 turns, I would say, but I haven't written it down). Especially Rome. If I share a continent with Rome, war is a 100% guarantee. (and despite now having both EPs and some of the other DLC, the game still tends to favor putting base game civilizations in my games, and being paired with Rome is quite common).

Missing from the poll: as a result of a military emergency. Usually stupid - "<your civ> has captured <some city>. We must resist their aggression!" But then the aggrieved party has been reduced to a feeble state and will be wiped out in the coming war.

I was wondering about that too. I dont know if they count because they don't require a denouncement. Still, they are essentially liberation wars.

Oh, that.

TBH I don't even know if the AI is aware if doing that is the same as declaring war, but let's say I haven't really spent my time figuring out how they think xD

I had an African country wanting open borders, trade, gave me gold, wanted to be my best friend. Only to declare a surprise war on me
