Doesn't run in the background?

It's late in the game, so the AI turns take a very long time. What I really want to do while the Ai is taking its turns is read some email, browse some websites, work on some documents, etc -- but if I put Civ in the background then it goes on pause, and it only resumes when I go back to it. Is there any way to get it to continue processing the game while I have other applications in the forefront?

I might be wrong but as I know it's not possible.

Annoyingly the game will not move forward if you alt tab out.

Just tested this. Switch the video options by turning fullscreen off and running in a window. You can alt-tab away and the game will keep running. You can even work in a small window in front of the game and keep one eye on the action.

How can you do that? Both my eyes usually look at the same way and for me it is not possible to look different things with left and with right eye
