Don Deity: Warlords 2.08, huge random continents map, epic speed

The Greek war(s), part 1: The fight for York:

…

The Greek camp, two miles away from the mountain range leading towards York, the leaders of the two Greek battalions of cavalry, Sir Lancelot and Don Quijote, discussing their next steps:

“We will never be able to defeat these damn English redcoats holing in up there on the hills without sending in some battalions of riflemen first, to weaken them a little, Sir Lancelot…”

“Don’t worry about that too much, Don Quijote, we are famous, we never lost any battle as knights so far, so we wont start with that right now… …and besides, with our new rifles and the shooting practice we had with Jon Wayne we are invincible…”

“But the combat odds are something like 99% of loosing…”

“Bah… …those damn mathematicians… …they have no idea of REAL warfare… …we WILL charge without assistance and we WILL win, I’m sure…”

…

Emergency meeting in York, a nameless general (he achieved nothing of great importance, and therefore wasn’t important enough to be mentioned by name) and Don Deity:

“Like I said Don Deity…. …based on the reports from the survivors, our two battalions in the hills were attacked by something during the night, they referred to as Yeti or BigFoot… …the reports vary a little here, but it must have been a big flock of these things and the raids lasted up to the morning. That’s why they were caught by complete surprise by the two approaching battalions of Greek cavalry and didn’t stand a chance to fight back…

“That’s plain ridiculous… …I don’t believe a single word from that lousy report…”

“Exactly… …that’s why I have sent some scouts up there to check for evidence… …and with the reports they brought, we came up with a new theory…”

“I only hope that it’s better then the first…”

“Well… …we will see:

There were lots of tracks leading to and from our army camp, but they were definitely human tracks. And backed by the fact, that we found heaps of empty bottles of extremely cheap ice-wine, we now suspect, that some descendents from the Whyshouldwestaythereians, with lots of spare wine, made friends with our troops up there and apparently they were boozing the whole night…”

…

Back up in the hills:

“But it’s dangerous up here, with all the Greek troops patrolling these hills, Don Deity…”

“Shut up… …I want every single survivor (which I turned into stone personally) placed up here, as a reminder of what will happen, if our soldiers neglect their duty… …wait… …what was that?”

“What do you mean, Don Deity?”

“I don’t really know… …but I have the strange feeling of being watched… …from something up there in the sky… …we better hurry…”

…

With the brave General Supersnaat far away leading the main body of the English army deep into Greek territory, and Don Deity and the nameless general busy moving hundreds of statues around in the hills near York, the Greek army met almost no resistance on their way down the hills, towards York. And apparently, motivated by their easy victory on the hills (loosing one of the redcoats against one of the cavalry had a chance of 1:99… …loosing both was sort of ridiculous… …but well, show must go on…) the Geek generals in charge didn’t even bother uniting their two army groups but pushed on, towards York at full speed:

Without any assistance, the major of York made a fatal decision:

He decided to assign two battalions of redcoats with the task of holding the river and left only three battalions for the defence of York (which, at that point already had lost about 1/3 of it’s population due to emergency drafting and whipping)…

With 6 battalions of Greek rifles nearby, and the two wounded Greek battalions of cavalry, that was a risky gamble, but more reinforcements were already on the way towards York and the major of York speculated in the Greek forces taking the bait and attacking the redcoats guarding the river passage and taking heavy damage conquering it (he had no illusions there, IF his plan would work, the next two battalions of English redcoats would surely die). But then, the Greek would be forced to split their forces even more and to put the first third of their army in direct reach of the first approaching English battalion of cannons…

mrchadt has been on some espionage mission. He originally stopped posting the saves as they were too big. His espionage mission was to a different realm of game playing as he was bored of civ4 after not being able to win on emperor level. Now, after not being very good at poker (which he tried playing), he has returned to do some loitering here. Not such a great story but quite amusing in the sense that I am a laughable character.

You say 6 battalions next to York right because it looks like only one on the hill and one SE of it in the pic.

However many you should station all of your defenders in York because 5 red coats in a city with CG (i assume you upgraded those unpromoted York defenders to CG) vs 6 rifles over a river is no contest.

@ Patricman:

It´s not a competition, and there are no rules (but you should write about reloads and going back to a later save to retry a different strat to the other players, if you did so). The main goal of theses games is comparing strat. and playstyles and improving your own play. There are some great players in these games and it´s a good place to ask the "heavy" questions;)

I joined in post 29... ...and have recently finished the game, so I think I might be able to bring the next DD update this weekend

Great, can't wait to read 'em, Snaaty. Especially now that football season is over; nothing to do, but civ, until baseball season.

The Greek war(s), part 2: Advancing on Rhodes:

…

In the outskirts of Rhodes:

“Sir, I’m surprised the Greek didn’t move any reinforcements in to hold the city… …even with the additional battalion of cavalry and the fresh battalion of rifles, we wouldn’t have enough men to take a properly defended town…”

“ I don’t expect them to move more defenders into Rhodes. In fact, I think they already have given up on the city… …with Don Deity and General Supersnaat advancing on Mycenae and Corinth right now, I suppose they are busy trying to hold those two cities big cities, not really caring for this unimportant borderland city…”

“So it will be an easy victory for us?”

“I fear not… …time is not on our side, so we will have to storm the city right away, without bombarding their defences… …I don’t really worry about the two catapults stationed in Rhodes, but the three fortified battalions of riflemen will be a tough nut to crack…”

…

And so the English army advanced on Rhodes from three sides, and with the defenders there outnumbered and cut off from reinforcements, the result of this battle was clear… …but the costs had even been higher then suspected:

Two battalions of English cannons and one battalion of Grenadiers perished, before the resistance in Rhodes finally broke down, and the remaining five English battalions (2 cavalry, 1 grenadier, 1 cannon and 1 redcoat) finally took the city, and India-England was finally united with Old-England geographically.

Around the same time, at the river bench near York:

“It seems like the Greek are taking the bait and are advancing towards us, not towards the city of York”

“Umh… ..I don’t know if this is such good news… …for us, I mean…”

“Men, you all know your job. We are to hold this side of the river as long as we can. No retreat, no surrender. We will fight until… …until the battle is over…”

And it was a big battle that lasted more then 4 hours. The Greek riflemen tried to push over the river several times, but each time they were pushed back by the two brave English battalions of redcoats. The losses were huge on both sides. But in the end, The English just hadn’t enough men left to fend of the final assault. Still, completely surrounded, they stud their ground and even managed to push another Greek battalion back into the river, but it should be their last heroic deed. Not much later, Greek forces controlled both sides of the river, but their casualties were immense:

Three Greek battalions of rifles were destroyed completely and the remaining two also had taken losses. Cut of from the main host of the Greek army, which, by the way, was slowed down even more, because they couldn’t resist to plunder the first English silver mine they came across, the situation of the Greek troops near the river of York was pretty hopeless now that the English were gathering more and more forces in the city of York…

Ho! 2 wee riflemen stations around 3 tiles away from the main force... crush them with a bombardment and kill them... use workers to make a fort and that spot unasseccable.

It's a very fun read Snaaty, thanks a lot for investing so much time in entertaining all of us and educating some of us. You've been doing this for SEVEN MONTHS! It's just amazing.

I love it easy so just play noble or prince (on a mac, so no BTS), you are showing me a lot that's improving my gameplay.

The Greek war(s), part 1: Advancing on Mycenae:

...

88.JPG

When General Supersnaat finally advanced towards Mycenae, he was approached the first night they camped in hostile territory by the 5 leaders of the English battalions of cavalry and grenadiers:

“Umh… …General Supersnaat, could you please explain to us, why we are camping exactly here, where the main Greek routes from Mycenae to Campalida pass by and any Greek units from Mycenae, that Alex sends out to meet us, or even those he sends out towards Camudoku can ambush us without any problems?”

“Yes, off course… …the whole idea of camping here is to lure Alex into attacking us… …and NOT attacking Camabackta which is relatively lightly defended right now. Cammolia has enough garrison troops to fend of some Greek battalions of cavalry without support from Greek siege engines and food soldiers, but nothing more.”

“So it is very likely, that Alex will attack US with the siege units he has in Mycenae, and very likely also with some of his riflemen… …and also very likely with some of the mobile cavalry he has around his capital...”

“Yup…”

“Well… …and especially our battalions are stationed right there, where you expect Alex to engage us, right?

“Yup…”

“So our question is, why are you doing this… …I mean, we will take heavy losses due to the expected collateral damage from Alex… …and then, also very likely, most of us will loose their lives to the Greek riflemen and cavalry…”

“Yup… “

“I must say, I don’t really like your plan… …I even must insist that you…”

BANGGGG…

“Why have you shot him!!!!”

“Motivation… …any more questions you four?”

“Well… …yes… …I really want to…”

BANGGGG…

“And now, you two, pick new leaders for our battalions to replace these idiots…”

“But there are three of us lef…”

BANGGGG…

“Sorry, what did you just say?”

But there was no answer, only the sound of running feet was heard…

…

“Hey, General Supersnaat, I must admit that I really like your methods to motivate your men…”

“Don Deity… …what the hell… …where do you come from, all of a sudden???”

“Beaming and such… …remember?”

“Oh… …off course… …what brings you here then?”

“I just wanted to check on your situation… …but after watching you motivate your men, I’m tempted to try that myself… …might I have your gun a minute?”

“Yes, our course, but…”

BANGGGG… BANGGGG… BANGGGG…

“Yeah… …a really nice way to spread motivation… …look at them running around confused and searching for an enemy or an ambush or something…”

“Umh… …Don Deity… …I think there might be a little misunderstanding… …you know, shooting down several soldiers from a distance isn’t exactly motivating them… …more like... ...confusing them… …you must call some of them to come over and speak to them and then…”

“HEY… …you two over there… …yes, you… …come over here… ...What’s your name?”

“Sergeant Bob…”

“And your’s?”

“Corporal Bob…”

“What a funny coincidence…”

BANGGGG… BANGGGG…

“Better now, General Supersnaat?”

“Umh… …ahem… …you know Don Deity… …I think you should stick to turning people to stone… …for motivation I mean… …could I have my gun back please?”

…

The Greek army attacked the English camp near Mycenae the same night, starting with heavy bombardment form the 3 battalions of catapults moved in from Mycenae. Then, two battalions of Greek cavalry moved in, and finally, two battalions of Greek rifles charged. But the highly motivated English cavalry and grenadiers fought brave and managed to take out two of the Greek battalions of catapults and a battalion of Greek rifles and Greek cavalry each. Only a battalion of English cavalry and a battalion of English grenadiers perished… …there were lots of losses within the surviving English battalions, but some more battalions of Cavalry were moved in immediately from Cammenbuctu and the English army marched on towards Mycenae already at dawn the next morning, destroying everything that was left of the Greek army in their path with ease…

…

And the Greek seemed to be in real trouble now… …heavily besieged on all fronts, from England and their war allies (= their vassals, Bren and Ash… …Don Deity had gifted them all warfare techs England had, two turns before the war against Greece started, to put Alex under some more pressure…) Greece really seemed to be close to total chaos. The Greek production apparently was already in bits and peaces, with two of their major cities under assault and a minor borderland city already fallen, because heaps of Greek workers were seen building workshops and factories, even in or near existing Greek towns (AHHHH… …they are destroying OUR precious cottages…). But most of them drop whatever they had in hand at the sight of the advancing English army, so the Greek progress to build up more production was slowed down even more…

…

It was no wonder then, that Mycenae was only poorly defended when the English army reached the outskirts of the city the same evening… …only four battalions of Greek riflemen were left in the city, the rest had apparently either been already lost in the ambush on the advancing English army, the night before, or was needed somewhere else…

89.JPG

Mycenae was easy prey for the 7 battalions of English cannons… …still, three battalions of cannons were lost, because General Supersnaat decided against bombarding the city and launched the decisive attack immediately when the English army arrived near Mycenae. A battalion of English cavalry sent out immediately after Mycenae was captured to scout the Greek lands behind Mycenae revealed that Alex had tried to reinforce the defences of Mycenae, but was too late… …all in all, three battalions of Greek rifles and one of trebuchets had approached the city, but General Supersnaat now expected them to retreat into Corinth, where Don Deity and his army just had arrived this night to start the attack the next day… …not the best news, because Don Deity’s army wasn’t as strong by far as the one General Supersnaat had assembled around him, because the English had expected the Greek defences in Mycenae to be much stronger then in Corinth…

Cool, but why not take the turn to knock down the defenses with the cannons? I didn't think The Don was so rich he could squander cannons like that (soldiers namend Bob, however, are a dime a dozen apparently).

@ bestbrian:

You are right about the attack and the cannons, but the battle for Mycenae was the first one for an important Greek city and I was sort of nervous/stupid, miscalcualted the situation completely, rushed in and lost WAY to many units in total there (3 cannons, (all of them were city raider 2...), 1 veteran cavalry (lvl 6) and 1 gren (lvl 3)) against no or only badly promoted 3 catas, 6 rifles and 2 cav... ...for the next cities, I need to bombard, because going on like that I would run dry after only some more turns... ...a kill ratio of almost 1/1 against a deity AI is simly not good enought... (there was still the option of throwing heaps of Bobs agains the citywalls, but well...)

Bob Statues do make for nice cannon balls and catapult shot. One way or another, they get to serve their country. :)

The attack was pretty rushed. You took the city of Mycenae. The Bob statues would have been something to fire at the walls or culture. Is it back to the meat grinder that is York?

Speaking of that, how is the situation at York? you said it was getting pretty hopeless for them, but have they tried to attack at all?

Scarredroman & Patricman:

The next update will describe mainly the advance of Don Deity towards Corinth, but will also contain some more info´s about the various battles near York.

It should be ready within this week (or so)

...

To sum up the events I already described near York so far:

The first Greek stack off 5 or 6 units has been destroyed, at the costs of 2 redcoats (+the two redcoats that got somehow taken out by the invincible Greek cavalry:mad:)

...

What´s still to come:

The BIG Greek stack (don´t know exactly right now, but must be something like 20-30 units) has just pillaged the first silver mine (a pretty stupid move, loosing them a turn) and is two tile away from York. We have 6 defeners in York (5 redcoats and 1 cannon) and 1wounded redcoat next to York and 3 more redcoats and 1 more cannon should make it there in time
