This follows on from dojoboy's Poll: Are you better at Civ3 than Civ2? thread, but I wondered if those of you who've played Civ2 in the past miss the 'Events' files, in relation to all the wonderful scenarios there were/are for Civ2.

I know I do - which is why I still think Civ 2 is a better overall game than Civ3, despite the crummy (by comparison) graphics.

You bet your sweet pattootie I do; Events made Civ 2 scenarios more than just "maps with stuff" or "scenarios," they let you build whole mods with little to no special skills or hacking. Civ 2's open-ended design was the apex of customizablity(?). Why Civ 3 regressed to a hard-coded (and initially editorless) simian design, that STILL lacks a competent editor, is beyond me.

Well, I played Civ2 quite a bit, but never got into scenario design. So, what are "Events" files?

What are Events files ?... Who's the Pope..? Who was nailed to a cross 2000 years ago for saying people should be nicer to one another...? What are Events files you ask !!??

Man, you haven't lived if you haven't tinkered with events files !

Well, basically it was a text file wherein you could set-up triggers to result in a specified action or Event.

A Trigger could be a particular game year being reached, a particular Civ. Advance being discovered by a specific Civ, the capture of a named city, a certain unit being killed (nation specific) etc etc

The resultant Event could be anything from a simple pop-up text message - e.g. if the game reaches 1348 a pop-up could say '1348: The Black Death reaches Europe...', through to the creation of units at specific points on the map, a specified Civ. Advance being given to a Civ...

It was a fantastic way of customizing historical scenarios... I once spent a wholoe summer BC3 (before Civ3) working on a WW3 scenario playing around with events like JFK's assasination, Cuban Missile, etc

I couldn't agree more !!!

@dojoboy
Ever play the civil war scenario in Civ2? Remember those leader units like Robert E. Lee popping up out of nowhere at certain times, that was the result of an event file. I still have not used the Civ3 editor because of the bugs, no event files I presume? :sleep:

Use the editor, Luke! use the editor!!!

I've been able to come up with some rather interesting scenarios for my own amusement and frustration, and while there are no event files to trigger things, it can set up to a close facsimile thereof, provided you're patient enough.

Yes, yes I remember. I love that stuff. So yes, frunobulax, I miss those "event" files....even though I never used them. :)

On a side note, frunobulax, how did you come about your username?
