DoWed by Friendly civ?

I was playing Grigory quite peacefully, teching for Archmages.
But suddenly Ethne the White of Elohims DoWed me! Our diplomatic stance was "friendly". so, why this happens?

Either you weren't friendly with her when she decided to prepare for war, or you have a vassal or teammate she doesn't like.

No one in FfH or base Civ4 is like that.

Doesnt' mean it's impossible, could easily be an issue with the recent incomplete merge of Wild Mana's AI settings.

Perhaps, but I believe it is more likely, as Monkeyfinger suggested that Ethne had decided to declare war earlier, then they gained friendly, but the AI doesn't cancel DoW plans, so they attacked anyways.

That would be likely, it just seems like a horrible idea to not have the AI reappraise it's warplans if relationships change... I really hope that it would be programmed to do that.

Happens all the time, AI here is much more aggressive than in vanilla.

No, but she does declare at Pleased.

Fun Fact: Varn has more chance to declare at Pleased then Faeryl, though both have it. I've changed it in my files, of course...

Also, as pointed out, having a "spoiler vassal" is also a possible reason.

I've certainly seen it with no vassals involved, although quite often nations do seem to declare war on the vassal and take the owner too.

I find that civs often declare war if you've somehow boxed them in and they have no more room to expand. Relations don't matter, if they have no place to go they start smashing faces.

Relations do matter. They get more aggressive in this situation but they still won't try to attack a friendly.

I had the Malikim declare war on me when we were "Friendly."

I had boxed them in and there were few areas on the map for anyone to expand into and certainly none for them that could have maintained a border-integrity.

They declared war on me even though our relations were Friendly. We had long-standing trade, I always helped them and gave them things, here and there, to maintain a good "relationship." Later, I was hoping to vassalize them instead of having to go to war with them.

But, they do attack. Come to think of it, the Kuriotes attacked me as well later in the game. We also had Friendly relations and I wasn't the only Nation on the Kuriotes' border.

During both wars, both Nations still showed "Friendly" in their attitude despite being at war with them. I don't know if I have the saves during that time or not, I periodically delete that folder to clean it out. But, I can try to hunt through them if necessary.

(IIRC, two vassals of my current opponents, the major warring powers aside from myself, still show "Friendly" or some other positive description in their attitudes towards me even though we're at war. However, they are vassals and did not declare war upon me separate from their lieges. They were forced to because of vassalage. That's different than the Malakim and Kuriotes which did it independently.)

I had that, but wrote it off as the Luchuirp could only attack me and nobody else. Still, sacrificed Corlindale as soon as he DoW'ed and we were fine.

Funnily enough, the FFH2 Manual says that you should look out for certain aggressive civs, such as Hippus, Doviello and Malakim. I had a 'WTH' moment at that.

I had no vassals, so annoying vassal is not the case.


I played another game, and I suddenly DoWed by my vassal.
I found out they tried to steal my Orthus's Axe and it triggered war.


But I don't think this was not the case also, since the Elohims directly moved their SoD to my well-developed city, so I think they had invasion plans, not a accidental war.
