Dr kossin #39

50bpt at 100% There's lots of good land though so you should be good. Is that barb city for the gems on a city? If so, you'll probably need a catapult or two to take it without ridiculous losses.

Yep, it's on a hill. I was more hoping for the AI to suicide though.

Definitely not a good opening but that's to be expected with a slow start (no food resource) and a high hammer investment in The Oracle/infra.

I'll let him introduce himself ;)

Well, it won't be co-op play but we'll be alternating playing rounds so that the flow keeps going.
Well some of you may still know me ;). As i like this series a lot i decided to come out of civ retirement to offer Kossin a hand. At least for the time being the name of the series will have to be altered to Deity round or something else that suits DR as i certainly don't have time to play a round a day. It should be possible to do one round/4 days approx. Kossin will also play rounds, we'll see how it turns out as we go along.

I looked at the position shortly. We seem to be in a good position. A few things that struck me,

We don't have horse which is a shame on this map as a very quick push to lib->MT would have been perfect, we have the food surplus to run mass scientists and spiritual allows us to run them. Someone like Pericles would be a nice target for such a rush.

We don't have any cottage built atm. I agree with that as Ramesses lends himself to a specialists game with the spiritual civic and the capability to get out Part/GL/NE in reasonable time even without marble. Nice neighbours so we can run pacifism later. I don't think i'm going to start cottages now, they're best if you start them very early in the game. By the time new cottages are worth anything i hope to have some of Pericles's cottages. Running a lot of specs won't give us a great science rate but enough to get what we need between the bulbable techs.

It's very important that we ensure that we are the ones that capture Illinois, would hurt to lose that city and probably the land behind it.

More later......

Dirk1302!
Welcome back from Civ-Reitrement. Remember what 'DR' means. :)
(No offence to Kossin. Real Life is important. Otherwise we would lose some very improtant things. Eating and breathing, for example.)

How does spiritual help with this? I can see that you'd miss the 1 turn of anarchy for switching to caste, but that's about it.

By the way on a related note: in bts, does spiritual allow you to change civics every turn? Or only every 5 turns like in vanilla?

I've been reading on food economies lately and one theme I've noticed is about the fact that you don't actually run specialists all the time. In fact, you don't even run them most of the time, and city growth is very very important.

Spiritual helps a lot because you can use slavery for building infrastructure, then grow to a large pop in many cities, then switch to caste and starve into 1-2 great people. You get to switch between infrastructure building civics and GPP civics every 5 turns, if you so wish, with no penalty.

So far, one of the most annoying things about trying a food economy, for me, has been that when I finally get CoL, I still have a lot of infrastructure to build, so I can't quite switch to caste system, even though I also want to use all those scientist specialists.

Exactly, and that's where spiritual comes in. It is not one turn anarchy and then stay in caste like forever. Being spiritual you alternate between Caste and Slavery as you see fit.

can someone please help me with a display problem I have when using bull and bug.

During late game when the enemy SoD gets very large. I mouse over them and can only see partial units because the unit display window is not large enough to show everything. Is there a way to see every enemy units in the stack? Currently the only way I can do this is by having another unit on top of the stack.

Please help

Sounds like you're using PLE. Try the various buttons at the bottom and if that doesn't solve it may I kindly suggest going to the BUG forum.

I believe we could use a few cottages while we wait on Civil Service as they will shortly outvalue coastal tiles.

It'll take 30 turns for non riverside to outvalue even the coast. If we have worker turns to spare and CS takes very long then we could cottage the southern peninsula. But i think that cities there are best used by working the food resources and running either scientists or working coast in order to grow big for infra whipping. With mass scientists and currency i don't think it's that long to CS.

Some quick calculation, run 4 scientists/city all with a library, capital with academy. That's 15bpt/city, 25 for capital for 100 bpt with slider at 0%. But slider will be higher than that with 6 cities. With 10 it will be close to 0 but then we have 160 bpt this way. Very low i agree but with paci we'll compensate by having multiple cities creating gp. Parthenon would be a great wonder for this strat , after rearranging some tiles it's 11 turns without chopping now and no one has aest.

LMAO @ Perc for building Henge. I love it when culture traits do that. Especially when they are not ind and non-charismatic.

Well at least he's philo so he gets +100% on those prophet points

600 BC Copper traded for ivory + 4 gpt

575 BC We get a GE!. This means i can rush Parthenon in Heliopolis. I don't know how the fight for the fish is now but with Parthenon we're sure to get it quickly. An alternative would have been to rush Parthenon near one of the barb cities but i'm confident we can prevail over the ais anyway. Capital finishes settler and is set to max food + S. paya. We have gold so we'll make money on this wonder, i'd actually like to have it as it saves a scientist for philo bulb.

550 BC Pericles researches col. We need a trireme to explore, we may have met all ais, maybe not. I want to know for sure.

525 Parthenon rushed , Alexandria founded near iron. Much as i'd like to go on with S.Paya and GL, 2 swords have priority now, getting Illinois and Teo can mean the difference between a 12 city empire or a 7-8 city one.

500 Memphis has finished his settler and will be assigned to worker building/whipping for some time.

450 Sell monarchy for mono + 40. I'm continuing wonders after 2 swords in capital and OR is a big help, also in other cities.

425 We destroy a barb galley

Set out to explore

325 Illinois captured. Was kind of close. Decided to attack with 3 axes against 1.5 archer. Else Darius would have axe + 2 immortals which is scary. I had > 80% overall to win this

Hmm this will change for sure.....

275 Oh my there's some good land left

250 BC, i had been going currency with saved gold at 100% and can trade for it now being halfway, not ideal but i get it with some gold in bargain for Aest. Sell fish for wine with Darius. Go 100 % col now, i need quick border pops in some cities.

175 2 swords built in capital means i can take flatland Teoihuacan easily. Nice blocking city with some good resources and it has 2 workers in it as a bonus. I sell lit for 235 gold to Qin.

125 Col in.

100 Darius demands Aest, i give in, why not.

50 Get Banana + 7 gpt from Darius for Copper. Go caste system for pops. Trade Col + lit for Cal + 10 gold. Teoihuacan has dye so i like Cal.

1 AD. get 40 gold for priesthood from Darius.

I don't know and i'm a bit too lazy now to check when i finished S.Paya and GL but i got them both.

We got a second GE instead of a GP. Lucky sure, well against the odds. But i did help luck a bit by at least assigning an engineeer while building S.Paya and GL instead of working a plain forest.
Obviously i plan to build UOS with it once we reach paper. With 12 cities that wonder would be kind of huge with cheap temples build almost for free.

Atm We have 9 cities and settlers for city 10 and 11 are ready and almost in place. Especially with UOS coming i'll settle them asap. Need to check that CS doesn't take me too long from here but i can't see us being beaten to UOS.

@obsolete, i can look at the situation but you seem to have a good team so not too much point in that. I don't have time to go for another succession game. I like to play some rounds here but i don't feel like going full civ4 again.

@Kossin, Shall i play the next round to ~500 AD and you play the round after?

Very good Dirk!

Good fortune with the GPs too!

Looks like 13 cities peacefully... This one should be in the bag already :D

I'll throw in a look soon at the save but I'm not able to play yet so yes the next set us yours as well.

Can we afford to grow Thebes a bit more by borrowing floodplains? It can feed 2 more grass hills with its current food.
