DreadNES: The Test of Time

Update 5
The Hordes Part II

980 – 975 B.C.E.

The largest campaign yet seen in history occurred in northern China. A triple alliance had been formed to counter the Hûnnic threat. The nations of Yan, Han, and Gojoseon campaigned against the Hûnnics advances in the Yan territories. As you recall, the Hûnnics were on the doorstep to Ji by 980 B.C.E. Then, quite surprisingly, a Han force appeared. This force consisted of professional soldiers and volunteers, who cherished the chance to fight the “barbarian in the north”. The Yan first feared they had come to conquer them, but when a Hûnnic-Han skirmish was fought, the Yan found the true intentions of the Han. While the skirmish achieved nothing, suddenly the Hûnnics retreated from Yan territory. The Han cheered this as a major victory, but what was the reason for this sudden lack of initiative from the Hûnnics?

Also in the area were the infantry Han gave to Gojoseon. They helped to round up any Hûnnics left in Yan.

The Han followed the Hûnnics northward, leading to the largest battle in history thus far.

However, meanwhile, Gojoseon finally eradicated the pest known as the Choson. No one was spared as the attacks finished off every last survivor.

The Judeans undertook some very impressive domestic orders over these five years. The people go into overdrive to make sure farming production is top notch. The people react with lower enthusiasm than normal, because the people do not want to do extra work.

However, the government gives the people lavish gifts for free, which really makes the people more sympathetic to the government. Though some might say the gifts are…cheap…the people do not notice at all. This adds loyalty to the people because of their nicer feelings towards the government.

Meanwhile, in the north, the city of Antioch switches from Hittite to Judean control peacefully. This citadel of the north will surely be a foundation for future Judean attacks in the north.

Jerusalem is seeing more people of the Jewish faith as pilgrims, because the people consider this to be the center of the religion. However, until there is some reason for Jerusalem to be a holy city, the town will continue to operate solely as Judea’s capital.

Also, the people of Moab decided that Judea should be their main ally, and, in 971, broke away from Nubia and the Hittites to ally with Judea.

In Central America the war continues.

Teotihuacán is on the verge of falling to the Olmec threat when the Maya and people of Chichen Itza counter-attack the Olmecs. There is a major battle amongst the jungle near Mayan territory as the Olmecs desperately try to hold them back, but the result is disastrous – the Olmecs are completely routed. Even worse, a major Mayan thrust completely outflanks the prepared Olmec defenses. The armies march on La Venta immediately.

However, the Olmec people feel their government and their gods have failed them. Their chief promised them total victory, but there was nothing but defeats. Sure, the attack on Teotihuacán was successful initially, but after all the fighting the city still held out. So, the people swung into action.

The government was overthrown, and the people abandoned the ways of the old gods. The Olmec people declared they were subjects of the Mayans, and they converted to Mayan Polytheism. The last bastion of the chief’s power was La Venta itself, and the Mayans besieged it quickly.

The city put up limited resistance, as most of their army was besieging Teotihuacán. When the city fell, the Mayans declared themselves the masters of the Olmec lands. When the army besieging Teotihuacán heard of the death of their chief, they fled northward into the desert. Maybe they were scared, or maybe they were looking for a new home.

In any case, the Mayans now have to deal with a fervent, but poor, Olmec population.

In Gaul, Marathos launch a large offensive to finally destroy the Gar. Their objective is the total conquest of Garra.

There are few battles, as the Gar retreated into Garra itself. Preparations were made to retreat from Garra and withdraw to start a new life. However, Marathos burned the ships in a cruel, but strategic, final act.

The city itself still held out, but it was vastly under populated. Many citizens had died in the war and in the burning of the ships. Still, they held out long more than Marathos expected. Finally, though, a massive assault began. The gates were broken, and the Marathos Heavy Cavalry charged through the tired and scared defenders. The cavalry marched right through the city to the palace and, in a sign of total domination, raised the flag of Marathos over the ruined city.

Gar may have been conquered by Marathos, but the land is barren and the people dead. Only time will tell when the Marathos province of Gar will once again becomes a thriving land.

In North America, the Iroqui are defeated on all fronts. Their villages are attacked, through St. Louis is spared, and may people are killed. However, the Hurons are not having fun conquering them, so they back down…for now.

The battle began dawn on August 2, 970. Han, with a contingent of Yan’s surviving infantry, were chasing about 500 fleeing Hûnnics. As they neared Gongin Mountain, Hûnnic soldiers hiding on the northwest side of the mountain attacked. Han had not expected such an attack, as they thought the Hûnnics defeated. 1,000 men became 2,000; 2,000 became 4,000 as more and more Hûnnics attacked. When the battle began in earnest, around 9:00 AM, it was almost 20,000 Hûnnics facing only 8,000 Han soldiers, with a third of them either irregulars or weakened Yan infantry.

The battle became a fighting retreat as the full weight of Hûnnic numbers bore down on the Chinese. The Yan infantry, having already fought the Hûnnics and lost, routed and fled from the battle, retreating southwards. By noon the situation was dire – the Yan were gone, and many of the Han irregulars were wavering. In fact, some of the Han infantry – professional soldiers – saw the situation with a negative outcome. However, Han withdrew behind a shallow river and took a new defensive position.

The Hûnnic chariots could not cross the river quickly, and they were forced to consolidate, with only their infantry attacking, though it took the men some time to advance. The battle continued at 3 PM. The fight was bitter, and lasted for several hours; neither force would give way. However, by 6PM the Hûnnic charioteers crossed the river in force, and the Han irregulars broke and fled the battle. Only a staunch rearguard of the Han army remained on the battlefield, but they fought defiantly.

After another hour of fighting, darkness began to fall. The Hûnnics withdrew across the river to continue the slaughter tomorrow, for even they knew not to fight at night – if you can barely see your hand in front of your face, how will you see the enemy?

Han counted casualties at this point, and the outcome was gruesome. The Yan infantry lost 500 of their men, while the irregulars lost 2,000 of their number. Of the Han infantry, there were only 2,000 left that were fit for action. This brings the total casualties to 5,500, or 68% casualty rate. Why had the Han suffered so badly?

Han had relied exclusively on infantry. While this tactic gives Han numbers, it made them vulnerable to the all-arms force of the Hûnnics.

The Hûnnics lost about 1,000 cavalry, 2,000 infantry, and 2,000 irregulars.

When dawn broke on August 3, 970, Han made preparations to retreat. However, when light came they noticed the Hûnnics were gone. Where were they?

The answer was this:

On the night of August 2/3, Gojoseon had finally neared the Mountain in order to attack the Hûnnic capital. Instead of the rag-tag Han army, Gojoseon had 10,000 well trained, experienced troops. The Hûnnics charged the Gojoseon infantry, who had formed a spear wall. The Hûnnics could not outflank the wall, and their attacks achieved nothing.

By 9AM, the Hûnnics were tiring. They had fought all the day before, and their attacks were not succeeding. The Hûnnics grew desperate and launched an all-out attack on the Gojoseon lines. This failed miserably.

The Hûnnics began to retreat. Then, the retreat turned to a rout. The rout than turned to every-man-for-himself as the Hûnnics desperately fled from the Gojoseon infantry, who were still fit for action. The result was staggering:

Only 1,000 Gojoseon infantry were killed, while another 1,000 were unfit for action. Nearly 10,000 Hûnnics had been massacred in the debacle of a battle.

While this was happening, Han attacked the city itself. The walls were easily breached, and the Han had the honor of being the first in the city. However, the High Chieftain was killed by the Gojoseon infantry in the previous battle.

And so, the threat of the Hûnnics passed…for now.

Next update will be a BT update. That means you do not send specific orders. For example, instead of saying: "Spend 2points of infantry" say, "spend a majority of my points on the military". Same with military and domestic orders: no specifics. Just general orders "expand this way, try to build temples, etc."

Orders for next update already sent. Great update. Btw what does BT stand for ? BT update? I got the point of the thing just wondering about the abberation.

Han:
To all victors of the triple allience:
WE thank the triple allience of the Yan, Gojosean and Ourselfs. WE thank the Yan for their contribution of weakend infantery, although defeated and halfed of their number. WE thank the little trained regulars and the Palace Gaurd (as they are to be trained (-1ep) and to retire (much later -1ep)in a perfect village near the coast of southern hunnic land. And we thank feverously to the Gojosean, Who finally saved the day and our Friends and family, that of over half are slaughtered. To all! i will send 1 ep to Yan and 1 ep to Gojosean to celebrate the defeat of all the barbarians in the far east and to Feast in the new free city in the south that is under none controll! and as a free city state of a hoped for Asian allience before moping up and asimilating the remaining hunnic people....

However, The song didn't yeild to our and Yan's plea, we will send an ambassador to investicate.

Also, we hope to learn from our mistake and recruit some Cavary in case of revival of hunnica in northern lands (-1ep)
These are my domestic orders.

Also, esclusivly to Yan,
We have noticed to folly of weakening us instead of helping each other as brothers should. Such as a twig is easy to break, but a bundle is very hard to do so, even a couple of trunks entwined together can befuddle the bect ax, as so, i will not ans shall not pursue the greaty weakend and almost destroyed yan, For to many people are deas, and at home, our pueople also are suffering from massive loss of brothers, husbans and sons... May a strong Chinease-asian allience prevaile forever.

Motto of the Han:
May the sword of protection shealth and prosperity Rule!
Amen

Meaning: Military should be called back, but not disbanded or forgoten, Cities and comerance should explode, trade rule, and Militery called back.... just not to be for gotten. Already our schools are teaching of the Great Battle Of Gongin Mountain, and Cavary training.

May Thy sword be shealthed! and prosperaty rule!

BT is basically 'Boring Times' Its the time when nothing remotely interesting is going on, like a major war (Ex: WW2), although minor wars are usually going on. Its a time of relative goodness, where you won't have to worry about the specifics, only the big picture.

IT (Interesting Times) are what happen when its not a BT.

@Carmen : Thank you .

BT coming tomorro.

By the way, when you're not too busy, can you put the latest map on the first page of this thread? I think that'll make things much easier; at least for me.

And maby link to the updates in one of the posts on the frontpage? That will make it so much easier to find the update you are looking for. You wont have to look through endless pages of posts for those treasures.

I agree, a post linking all the updates is vital :)

Sounds good.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: I didn't update stats this turn. They don't matter for the BT, and they will change, so you don't need them

Orders sent.
