Driving stick shift vs. automatic

I perfer Automatic Transmition. I dont have the cordination for Stick Drive.

I'll never be able to drive a car. The only time changing gears will affect me is if I choose it in a racing game.

I know a man who's got no legs and manages to drive with an adapter, really! never say never.

Assuming I don't have the cash for a ridiculously expensive car with a really good semi-automatic, i.e. the system I've seen in newish Porsches or BMWs, then manual all the way. More control, etc. And one reason that hasn't been posted yet: You can't push-start an auto.

I own a 1972 BMW and stick is the only way to go my man...no automatic can dump the clutch and peel out like I can ahaha

My family has all Manuals but our big SUV (aka the tank Excursion) is automatic.

But other wise learn to drive a manual first

Indeed, thats how I started my 1987 tercel for about 3 months, until I sold it 200$ to an immigrant.

Stick shift all the way. Not sure what long trips have to do with anything. Once you reach your top gear their is no more shifting to be done and my car has cruise control.

Its even worst when you have a semi flat tire (believe me). Then you have to rush back in the vehicule, switch gear and unclutch before you loose all the speed.

From my experience the lighter the car the funnier it gets! Do you have experience in snow driving? The more experience you have the better it becomes! Usually heavy cars will have a tendency to get stuck in snow while lighter cars flow over snow!

Edit: IMO its just that you dont know how to drive in snow

Good enough to not have any car slide out from underneath me, before or since.

I like manual for its mileage, now that i got an Auto car, the mileage sucks and driving becoz expensive...

But i have to admit its so much easier, more fun and relaxing while driving an auto. dont think i will switch back...

I learned on an automatic but I've only owned sticks, so I guess I prefer them based purely on familiarity. Whenever I have to drive an automatic I always get a little anxious the first few times I stop, afraid I'm going to stall if I don't mash something.

The thing that really annoys the hell out of me is power steering . . .

Because NJ requires that you take the driver's test in an automatic, I learned only automatic. I could learn how to drive a stick if I had one, and I might then prefer it.

I've had lots of each and don't really care. My son never wanted to learn to drive a manual; my daughter never wanted to learn on a automatic. I learned to drive a manual (a renault dauphine IIRC).

I've driven both, and I have an automatic right now. I don't care that much, though I'm probably better off with an automatic, as I have a bit of trouble getting off the line quickly with a manual. That's not really a problem where I live, but it could be if I were in a more congested area.

Only ever tried on an automatic. I imagine I would have more fun with a manual, but I would have to find a crappy car to learn on.

Stick shift. It gives you better control of the gears, plus, if you only drive auto you'll be in trouble if you need to use stick shift (Da Vinci Code, anyone? )
