[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

norls' suggestion on the National Park is a good one. My understanding of corps is that the more of a corp required resource you have, the greater the corp's franchise bonus is in each city. From what I've been reading on the current ALC game, Sid's Sushi is an absolute monster with the amount of seaborne resources Big and Small maps generate.

I have played one turn, taken Akkad, and Hammurabi is prepared to capitulate! Should I accept his offer?

I could press on and take Dur-Kuligalzu in two turns (only two longbows), but there is a risk that Hammurabi would capitulate to Catherine before then.

Dur-Kur isn't placed that bad and would make a pretty good city. But it doesn't have more resources that we really need. More dye to trade, more clams and fish for Sid's Sushi.

Would Hammurabi capitulating to us put us at war with Catherine and Stalin?

I guess I don't know enough to answer.

Well, I've only played vanilla CIV before, so I'm not sure about the vassal system myself. If it was up to me, I'd accept the capitulation offer and keep Akkad to relieve cultural pressure on Babylon. However, I'm waiting until tomorrow to finish my turns to give everyone a chance to comment, since this decision impacts the rest of the game.

Edit: I don't see why taking the capitulation should put us at war with Catherine.

Capitulation could go either way. Cat and Brennus could declare on us if they think they're strong enough or simply accept peace with Hammurabi. That probably depends on relative strength and apparent advantage. The last time I looked Cat and Bren didn't have any troops in Babylonia so they're not in a position to immediately continue the struggle.
If Ham doesn't capitulate to us he will capitulate to someone else, probably Cat so overall accept capitulation and see what happens.

345: Attacking and capturing Akkad, losing one grenadier and one catapult.
346: Since everyone, me included, thinks it is a good idea I accept Hammurabi's capitulation. The war is over, and Catherine and Brennus are still pleased with us :)

347: Akkad wants to rejoin the Babylonian empire. I decline, for now.

We win the musket quest, and can chose from either a free pinch promotion, or a golden age :goodjob: I take the latter. Want to have factories asap. I gift gunpowder to Babylon. They might as well learn how to defend themselves, now that they are associated with us. This also improves our relations somewhat.
349: Steam researched, next Corporation. No coal (of course ), so no railroads for us. I see coal close to Chakogia (Native Indians), Fashil Gebbi (Ethiopian), Portland (American), or Opis (Russian). Steal or trade? We could settle on the coal close to Opis, but it will annoy Catherine.
351: Lucky break - free research towards Railroads
yena004.jpg

354: Starting Iron works in Boston.
355: A privateer is blocking trade outside Chaco Canyon.
359: Got mass production. Queuing Factories in our production cities - we need more production. Next railroads.

I put a settler on the nearest coal (close to Catherine). Should we settle there?
yena005.jpg

I leave this decision to the next player. Another settler is being built for the forest preserve city.

Great turnset Yena. We could either settle on the coal like you said, or settle the coal near Roosevelt, gift him the city and demand the coal from him.

I guess the latter will be optimal, but the former takes less time. I know how important it is to get the workers busy with railroads, now's the time of the game workers run out of stuff to do.

The city near Russia might flip over to Catherine. In the long run that wouldn't be so bad, we'd probably have Combustion and oil by then. But it's going to be a useless city other than giving us coal. And Combustion is the next tech after Railroad.

I guess I like building it near Roosevelt and gifting it to him, but I'm open to other opinions.

*Edit*: I looked at the save, it'll take 8 turns for the settling party to get to Roosevelt's island. I guess it's down to settle where we are or just do without coal. I'm thinking settle where you are works best.

My idea is that this will be a cheap (close to our borders) filler city until we get a better supply of coal. Our main concern right now is production, so railroads sooner rather than later is important.

Inherited Turn (1695 AD) - I take a look at our world. Brennus is hitting Physics in 7 turns. We can get it in six and more than likely snipe the free GS out from under him. I switch to Physics.

Turn 1 (1700 AD) - The Russians (which one?) suffer a set back on their research. St. Louis founded and already suffering massive influence pressure.

STLOUIS.jpg

Turn 2 (1702 AD) - Chicago asks to join Roosevelt and Babylon asks to join Hammurabi. I say no on both counts. Tornadoes damage Roosevelt.

Turn 3 (1704 AD) - Golden age ends. Settler built. Wrokers continue to set up the Forest Preserve city.

Turn 4 (1706 AD) - Brennus comes asking for Economics. He is pleased. I tell him no. He remains pleased. I increase the science rate temporarily to make sure we're a turn ahead on physics.

Turn 5 (1708 AD) - Buffalo founded. Library begun.

BUFFALO.jpg

Turn 6 (1710 AD) - Sitting Bull comes asking for Gunpowder. He is pleased. I tell him no. He remains pleased. Physics discovered. We gain another great scientist. Buddhism spreads to St. Louis. I go back to researching Railroad.

Turn 7 (1712 AD) - Confucianism spreads to Buffalo. Cathy and Yaqob have Uranium within their borders. There is one unclaimed spot north of the Barbarian city of Gepid.

URANIUM.jpg

Our finances cannot sustain a concerted effort to claim it at this time.

ETHIOPIA.jpg

ETHIOPIA2.jpg

Turn 8 (1714 AD) - I drop the science rate to 70% for an improvement to our coffers.

Turn 9 (1716 AD) - Hammurabi adopts Organized Religion and Caste System.

Turn 10 (1718 AD) - Iron Works begun in Boston.

Turn 11 (1720 AD) - Great Scientist born in Chicago. St. Louis' borders expand. Brennus and Cathy are both researching Rifling.

Turn 12 (1722 AD) - Railroad discovered. Biology chosen. Native American spy discovered in Babylon. I begin railroading our continent.

Turn 13 (1724 AD) - Nothing.

Turn 14 (1726 AD) - Railroading continues. Our coffers continue to grow.

Turn 15 (1728 AD) - Not a lot happened during my turn set. We denied Brennus a free Great Scientist, and grew one of our own, as well. All of our Great People are currently stored in Washington. Brennus is now cautious. We are railroading while we still have access to St. Louis. I am constructing banks to improve our economic situation so we can push the science slider back up.

HERE is the save.

Looking good. I think that Atlanta should build a workboat for Buffalo instead of another prison.

Got it. I see Cathy is again gearing for war. She's Annoyed at ZY, so to make things a bit more fair I think we should sell Gunpowder to the Ethiopians to prevent Cathy from steamrollering him. Before the game is over we'll have to fight the Russians, I'm sure of it.

We desperately need some civics changes as well.

Turn 0 (374): I sell DR to Hammurabi for 170 gold and his map. I also sell Gunpowder to ZY for 400 gold and his map. Oromo Warriors should slow down Cathy a bit. We're already fighting the Cold War against Russia. The National Park city is being done wrong. You need first to lumbermill a couple of the forests so they can worked until the park is complete. I go Free Speech + State Property for a whopping 3 turns of anarchy. We can later move to Free Market for the Sushi, but right now our distance maintenance is a killer. Galleon loads up with troops and leaves Babylon to conquer that barb island.

Turns 1-2 (375-376): Not a lot to report during anarchy. Some ancient writings were discovered (by looters?) in Washington, boosting +4 :culture: for the monastery in exchange for 17 gold. Sitting Bull completes Versailles.

Turn 3 (377): Hurricane hits Washington. Courthouse and granary destroyed. Could be worse. Research now -18 gpt at 90%, but raking in a respectable 1249 :science:/turn. I fire some priests and hire some merchants so that we run break even at 90% and get 1231 :science:/turn. Once Biology is in and the cities grow, we will run down the tech tree like a cheetah. We don't need three surplus Great Scientists, so Rene Descartes can go found an academy in San Francisco.

New York -> work boat. Miami -> settler. I am trying to grab that coal for Roosevelt before anyone else gets there first. Brennus already has a city on the island.

civ4screenshot0038iv2.jpg

Turn 4 (378): Troops land near Polynesian, it has two LBs for defense. More importantly, it has coal. I cancel the settler party. Philly -> batch of spies. Let's use our surplus EP points, shall we. Cathy has some nice towns we could sabotage.

Turn 5 (379): Polynesian taken and gifted to Roosevelt. I'll ferry a worker over to hook up that coal. I sell Railroad to Roosevelt so he can see and trade it to us.

Turn 6 (380): Biology -> Rifling. We need to bolster our defenses a bit. Miami -> cannon.

Turn 7 (381): Babylon -> library.

Turn 8 (382): Chicago -> theatre.

Turn 9 (383): Rifling -> Fascism. I want the free GG to setup a military spam city. Philly -> infantry (repeated, remove when our army is upgraded).

Turn 10 (384): Miami -> infantry (repeated). Another Great Artist is born. Buffalo -> granary.

Turn 11 (385): Seattle -> observatory. Los Angeles -> university.

IBT: Cathy demands Chemistry, I refuse. Still at Pleased.

Turn 12 (386): Fascism -> Medicine. San Francisco -> grocer. Babylon -> JewishTemple. El Cid the fascist heads over to Boston.

Turn 13 (387): St Louis -> BuddhistTemple. A fire destroys forge in Houston.

IBT: Sitting Bull demands we break deals with Russia. Eh, no.

Turn 14 (388): MilAcademy founded in Boston. I fear for Zara. He still has no Oromo Warriors up.

Turn 15 (389): NY -> grocer. I'm building a fort on the coal on Roosevelt's territory. I think that will connect it for him and we can take it from him, possibly gifting St.Louis to Cathy since it won't be needed any more.

civ4screenshot0043te3.jpg

We are still weak militarily and should be cranking out infantry in our three production cities to correct that. Cathy's power is off the charts, which means she will likely invade and conquer Zara during the next couple of turnsets. Nothing much we can do about that.

By the way, we have No tech brokering turned on, so you can safely give Hammurabi and Roosevelt all our techs. They won't spread around.

State Property is working nicely, we are pulling in over 1400 :science:/turn, but if we want to switch to try out the Sushi then I'll leave that to the team to decide. Even if we don't swap immediately we probably want to found as many corps as we can to deny them from the AIs.

We should also discuss placement of national wonders, especially Wall Street, and the usage of the great pool of great people in Washington.

Here I leave you, we continue with the terrible njorl's saga.

Here I leave you, we continue with the terrible njorl's saga.
It's not that terrible!

(Monty Python reference to those who don't get it)

So with the Kremlin in soon and Medicine nearly done, changes to Universal Suffrage for +1 hammer from town (most of our cottages are towns already) and Free Market to allow corporations, will be in order.

Miami, Boston and Buffalo look like they'd benefit the most from Sid's. Sisiutil's ALC said the headquarters should go in the Wall Street city. That looks like Babylon, it's our biggest gold output by far.

Leaving Representaion will cause a 3 :) penalty in our 5 biggest cities but everywhere except Chicago and Los Angelas they should still be ok. Chicago has a theater on the way and needs a coliseum. LA getting a coliseum should fix its unhappiness. And on a side note, we could increase happy by spreading our religions but we can't since we don't have monastaries for some of them. Always try and build a monastary for every religion you found.

For research, combustion and then electricity and industrialization for destroyers, carriers and our unique unit.

Unless others have comments :)

*Edit* Oh yeah, got it, will play and post tonight
