[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

Would a spy stationed in Babylon help stop enemy spies there?

We already have two spies AND the Security Bureau. Two foreign spies were caught during my turnset, but obviously some are still getting through.

lurker's comment: Great Works no longer end revolts.

I've never seen this happen before. Would increasing the espionage slider make it harder for enemies to spy against us? Can vassals spy against their masters? Washington's our spy center (it has Kremlin there I recall, I can't check the save) maybe more spy specialists there will help.

Increasing our overall espionage point count should increase the cost of rival nations' spy missions. I wonder if it's more of a cultural thing, though. American culture in Babylon is the minority (at least the last time I checked).

I'll pull down the save later today when I get home from work. I will try to play tonight or tomorrow.

Putting the WS in Babylon and then spreading Sushi to the closeby Babylonian cities was a mistake. Dur Kurigalzu is already generating massive amount of culture with the Sushi branch in there.

Rush buy the broadcast tower and temple in Babylon. If we get two extra Buddhist temples and a Jewish temple somewhere we can also rush buy the stupa and synagogue there, putting an end to the revolts eventually. Right now there's over 5% chance of revolt. We can also try ferrying more units in there to put a stop to it temporarily.

We could found Civ Jewelers in Babylon, giving a healthy cultural boost and providing for some more corporate spammage. Just don't spread it into the neighboring Babylonian cities. ;)

Civ Jewelers sounds good - GArtists can set that up, right? I'll drop as much culture there as possible, and look to see if we can put some extra buddhist and jewish temples in.

I guess the business about Sushi cultural pressure is my fault. Not being familiar with corporations it didn't occur to me it could be a problem.

I just saw the 5.51% chance of revolt under the city nationality in the city screen. Hadn't noticed that... ever I think. Anyway, the culture problem seems fixable. We get a broadcast tower next turn when Eiffel Tower is done. That's 50% more culture. Put a Buddhist Stupa in (have to build 2 more buddhist temples, can do them in Akkad and Boston, not sure if Babylon needs one) for another 50% more culture. Run 2 artist specialists (most we can run) as well, and as many other specialists as we can (they're +2 culture from Notre Dame)

And I always figured it was spies :)

Inherited Turn (1860 AD) - I take a look at our situation and make plans. The first thing I do is stack the Globe Theatre into Babylon to try and kill the unhappy faces. Akkad cues a Buddhist Temple. Washington sets up The Pentagon. Philly gets West Point.

Sid's Sushi goes to the Transport and is sent to (American) Polynesian.

Turn 1 (1861 AD) - Greatest Civilizations. We're the top of the list.

CIVILIZATIONS.jpg

L.A. wants to join Babylon. I tell them no. U.N. holds elections for the Secretary General. I vote for us. Roosevelt adopts Environmentalism. Sitting Bull births a Great Merchant.

Great Artist Founds Civilized Jewelers in Babylon. This should help with the culture.

We win the U.N Election for Secretary General.

Turn 2 (1862 AD) - Boston is cranking Tanks and SEALs

Turn 3 (1863 AD) - Great Engineer born in Bibracte. Sid's Sushi expands into Honolulu.

Turn 4 (1864 AD) - Babylon's borders have expanded.

Brennus incorporates Mining Inc! That'll hurt.

Sid's Sushi expands into American Polynesian.

Turn 5 (1865 AD) - Yaqob begins a Golden Age. Sid's Sushi expands into Chaco Canyon. Hermitage constructed in Akkad. I cannot rush Globe Theatre yet.

Turn 6 (1866 AD) - We lose the Globe Theatre. I begin building the Buddhist Stupa instead.

Turn 7 (1867 AD) - Plastics was discovered. Computers is chosen for Modern Armor and The Internet.

Turn 8 (1868 AD) - Nothing. Three Gorges Dam can only be produced in Washington and Atlanta.

Turn 9 (1869 AD) - Gandhi comes asking for Open Borders. I say yes.

Ah, man. A Russian industrial heiress was jilted at the altar by one of our tycoons. It causes a -1 diplomatic penalty towards Cathy.

And on the heels of that is a U.N. Resolution. I don't think we're well liked enough for the diplo victory so I look at our options, and go for Single Currency, +1 trade routes in all cities.

Buddhist Stupa built in Babylon.

Cathy's cautious towards us. So is most of the known world. Brennus is annoyed. Only the weaker nations actually like us.

We need to do something to fix this, but gifting her (or Brennus) anything will need to be discussed by the group.

DIPLOMACY.jpg

We are increasing in power, but Cathy and Brennus are ahead, even with the production of high end units out of Boston.

POWER.jpg

Turn 10 (1870 AD) - Yaqob comes asking for Military Science. After looking at the diplo modifiers, I give it to him to help prop him up against Cathy and Brennus. That brings him to Pleased.

We can bribe him (Vicky, and Gandhi) into a war with Cathy (Stalin) in exchange for Mass Media. Ethiopia has Knights, Cats, and Riflemen in addition to their new Grens. Cathy does not have Grens, but will be able to train machine gunners soon.

CATWAR.jpg

Mt. Rushmore in Miami, it begins constructing Battleships and Destroyers.

U.N. Resolution succeeds at 650 votes. Good thing, too. If I'd tried for a Diplo win, we might've lost. Cathy and Brennus were the only ones who voted no for a total of 498 votes...

Turn 11 (1871 AD) - San Francisco wants to join Babylon. No. I realized why construction on the Globe Theatre was halted in Babylon -- noly 2 National Wonders, and the two Corporations founded there count as National Wonders. The revolt risk is steadily reducing, however. It is now at 4.55%

Turn 12 (1872 AD) - Computers discovered. I choose Artillery for 4 turns. Great Artist born in Chicago. I choose culture in Babylon for one turn (waiting on the construction of our final Jewish temple).

The Internet is set in Boston following its final Navy Seal.

Civilized Jewelers expands into Akkad to help with the Culture War.

Turn 13 (1873 AD) - Nothing.

Turn 14 (AD 1874) - Brennus is annoyed. Gem for Pig has been cancelled. I gift him Biology to bring him to Cautious. In this case, I felt I had no choice, given the fact that he's developing Fission and he's Cathy's friend.

Gems for Hit Singles and Pigs. I set up the trade.

Philly begins building our Bomber force after the construction of West Point.

Babylon rush buys a Synagogue.

Brennus comes back asking for me to stop our deals with Gandhi. The only deal we have is Open Borders. Vassal relations do not affect master relations. I would do it if it were allowed. Guess there's a turn limit on them.

Yaqob will still smack Cathy for Mass Media. Cathy will not attack anyone else -- she just doesn't like us enough. Same goes for Brennus.

I think we ought to figure out how to get Brennus and Yaqob to gang up on Cathy.

Cathy's military might has jumped over the last few years. Most concerning. Yaqob would be too weak to handle her. We're building a huge navy, though.

Turn 15 (1875 AD) - Brennus cancels Clam, Fish, and 5gpt for Horses.

I renegotiate the Clam and Fish for Horses and 3gpt from us.

Babylon builds its Jewish Synagogue. I begin Hollywood. Chance of revolt is down to 4.25%.

Worsening relations with the two biggest rivals concerns me. We have an aggressive Naval program underway in Miami. Philadelphia is producing a highly trained strategic bomber force (West Point). The Pentagon is 13 turns away in Washington. Boston has temporarily suspended ground force production to get the Internet. We're going to need it as Cathy and Brennus catch up or pass us in the tech race.

Here are our relations:

Here is our Power:

POWER2.jpg

I did not whip or draft because I did not want to significantly harm our happiness. The Wonders I have produced or have begun producing are in preparation for war.

HERE is the save.

You couldn't build Globe Theater in Babylon because the Hermitage and Wall Street where already there. You did well building up the culture there.

I don't think we need The Internet. It won't give us anything tech wise. It's the kind of thing you build waiting for your ship to get to Alpha Centauri. We're at a profit at 90% research, with #1 GNP, 1.75 times higher than the next highest GNP. They're not going to catch us.

Three Gorges Damn would be nice, and it looks like it can only be built in Washington.

I say start the Apollo Program and get started on spaceship victory. If we can get no nuclear proliferation thru UN we're all set militarily, Catherine and Brennus may have big armies but they have no way to move them anywhere. We have no Uranium so that's our only weakness at the moment.

Health looks like a problem again, maybe a side trip to Ecology?

It sounds very American; dominating the world thru fast food franchises.

I like the late cultural win. Usually you need to plan for it early on, so it would be an unexpected end to this adventure.

Culture is fine for me. It is any which way you can, after all. We just need to keep Cathy and Brennus off of us long enough. If we can, keep The Pentagon in production. The extra XP could help.

I can't check the save now but I think we need Satellites, Fiber Optics, Ecology, Fission, Fusion, Genetics, and Robotics to complete the spaceship. Not sure how long that will take.

We could use the great people we have stockpiled for a golden age to make it go faster. Along with a lot of the production. (Do golden ages increase culture?)

I could just be clinging to my comfort zone because I've never gone cultural this late in the game. But for a culture win we'd have to spread Sid's and the Gem one to the culture cities. Easy enough. Would we have to spread our religions around too to make cathedrals? I think we only have monastaries for Confucianism. That could be fixed with switching state religion and Organised Religion though. Abuse the Redentor a little, we haven't done much of that this game. Does Redentor let you change your state religion every turn as well?

The more I think of it the more cultural sounds more interesting. I just need a little more convincing though :)
