This is simply a dummy tech. Purpose could be to fill up that last hole on the tech tree or something like that.

HERE CLICK HERE

Sorry if it serves no purpose :(

Looks nice, but the icons need to be in 256 colour, with the last two colours in the palette being green (0,255,0) and magenta (255,0,255)

Here's a preview of the icon too

Ahh, I see! So I just put the foreground to Green and the background to Magenta? Or how so?

What i do is reduce the colours to 256, then open the palette, change the last two colours to green and magenta then colour the bits that turn green and magenta with the closest remaining colours.

its fairly easy once you get the hang of it. what program are you using?

This is for Paintshop Pro, if you use Photoshop you have to change the first 2 colors in magenta and green :).

I recomend reducing the colors to 254, and ADDING the green and magenta(tho I usually use to magentas on mine...and no green at all)...

if you Index to 256, and "change" the last 2 colors to Magenta and Green, then you may alter the actual picture...Indexing to 254 and adding 2 colors preserves the color scheme

If you are using GIMP, the Magenta needs to be the last 2 colors on the colormap...

The simplest thing to do is just load up a Firaxis icon and see which colours there are bright green and magenta, and then make sure your image does the same thing. In NeoPaint, which I use, every time you alter the palette you have an option of either keeping the same colour indexes (indices?) or changing to the closest one in the new palette, which means it's easy to alter the last two colours without messing up the image.

If you really can't work out the palette, just load a Firaxis icon that seems to have roughly the same colours, copy and paste your image into that icon, and then save it under the new name.

I have Photoshop! Thanks Mirc.

If you are using Photoshop the esiest way to make a correct PCx is to use Image/Mode/Indexed Color.
Now in the pop-up box Select Forced/Custom
This will open the pallette for editing click on the first box and enter 255, 0, 255 now click on the second box and enter 0, 255, 0.
This will ensure that the pallette is set-up correctly for use in Civ3.

Some pcx's use a different setting then this, so if you are editing something other than the techs open the pcx in Photoshop and select Image/Mode/Color Table. When you do that you will be able to verify colors that are required and their placement in the color table.
I hope this takes care of any questions. I feel every forum that deals with graphics should have at least one ACE (Adobe Certified Expert). Acheiving your ACE is a pain but worth it if you work with graphics and Adobe products.

Hey BadKharma, I had used Adobe Photoshop quite a bit, and I am familiar with it, except the colour tab.

If you look at my arch angels tech pack, you'll see grandraem had posted a tutorial before you :P

So is this image supposed to be used in the event that you don't have a tech or icon, so you use this as a placeholder?

Well, it's better than my generic "Missing icon" icon that I made but never had to use it. (very generic, 2 colors of black and red)
