I saw this game being mentioned in the greatest RPG thread and, as someone who's played a lot of ADOM, decided to give it a shot.

The story isn't up to much but otherwise it's superb. The interface alone means that I'll have great difficulty going back to ADOM.

I've not managed to get a charachter lower than level 11 or beyond experience level 13. I've cleared out the Orcish Mines a couple of times but I find the Lair to be very difficult. I'm having the best luck with Halfling Hunters, Trollish Monks, Merfolk Healers (tough early game, but those that survive past that do well), Orcish Priests and Human/Deep Elf Wizards.

Anyone else actively playing this game? And if so, do you have any tips for dealing with fountain and door mimics?

I used to play the original Dungeon Crawl. I'm not much of an ASCII fan nowadays.

Shut your mouth.

DCSS is one of the best roguelikes I have ever played. I am about the same as you though in that around Dungeon level 11 or 12 I usually get unlucky. Very good game and very awesome interface.

2 happy coincidences -

1) webtiles gets released (tiled version- so no ASCII interpretation)
2) get new trains on my commute to work with wi-fi

result - free mobile soup stone!

just ran into my first mimic today - was a shop mimic! troll monk made short work of it though. Of course he then died to a pair of vampire mosquitos two levels later - any tips on dealing with those?

The game looks pretty cool.

I loved ADOM, Hack, Moria and all those types of games. :D

I'll have to give it a shot.

Hope they have Druids. :P

Just wanted to bump this thread (in lieu of making my own).

This is the best AND most accessible rogue-like game I've played (I'm hardly an expert on the subject, but I've tried a few).

If you're completely new to rogue-likes, this game is basically part dungeon crawl, part turn-based strategy, with typical rpg character development elements. Well worth the time to check it out.

I haven't played this in a while. The mid game felt like too much of a grind. Though I hear that it has been shortened recently, e.g. the Lair and Elven Halls are now only 2 levels.

David Ploog, former lead designer of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, gave an awesome interview on Roguelike Radio a couple weeks ago. I may not play this game much anymore, but I could have listened to his game design ideas and anecdotes about the development of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup for a lot longer than the episode lasted.

A statement that deserves a response, but arguably in its own thread.
