i was playing for ottomans; and went for a revulution. domestic advisor said; 4 turns and it will be ok. in that time i couldn't have get republic; thinking of monarchy to choose. and i had built great liblary before going anarchy. anarchy ended and i choosed monarchy. then get republic for free in the following turn. then looked up editor; and realized that i have forgotten ottomans' best goverment is republic. i changed my mind and went for a revulution again. now it said 8 turns in anarchy! what has changed? i waited for 20 turns; again went for a revulution; it said 9 turns in anarchy!
although i have connected every city, expect two of them, to capital....

what is "duration of anarchy" related to? i really wonder... i looked up for general questions but could not find there.

It is dependant on number of cities and some randomness. I did a few tests some months back, but I didn't get farther than:

2 turns basefor C3C, 1 turn ofr vanilla/PTW
0-4 dependant of number of cities
0-3 randomly selected

Religious civs use only the base turns and count the other two factors as 0.

Civ2 had a nice feature that let you instantly change governments as many times as you wanted during the first turn after anarchy. Useful for making comparisons.

I miss that. :(

himm thanks for help theoden; after changing the regime to the monarchy; i settled 6 cities in four turns; that must be the reason; and randomise as you say.

but random selective is not logical; civ is a clever game and goverment is an "important" issue. i think; there must not be "luck" in this issue.

and if i were sid meier; or in the team that coded the game; i would have mdke courthouses and roads as a "duration eliminator for anarchy". because that's logical one! road for new governors; connected cities to capital can accept new goverment faster; courthouses hold people under control during anarchy, so shortenes the period of anarchy...

i think they apply these in civ4

you can save in the last turn in anarchy, and then change goverment; then load again to the last turn of anarchy; and choose another one. so you an compare like that. at least i use this method :goodjob:

Hmm, I thought the whole thing was random, aside from the religious part. Because I often would go through 5-8 turns of Anarchy when I switch, and sometimes only 2 or 3.

I've seen a minimum of 3 turns for a non-religious civ to up to 8 or 9 (can't remember)

Just a comment on that: If you are referring to the so called "favorite" government of the civ, that is unimportant. Favorite and shunned governments give a slight attitude bonus/hit when dealing with someone else that is all. It is best to pick your government based on the situation. Often Republic is the best government no matter what civ you are.

The total length of the anarchy is composed of two separate numbers. The first is a random number between 1 - 5; and the second is between 0 - 3 and depends upon the number of cities in your empire. The combination of the two numbers is the amount of turns in anarchy, meaning a non-religious civ can experience anything from 1 to 8 turns of anarchy at each government switch.

With C3C, Firaxis "corrected" the formula to match the intent. In Vanilla/PTW, you could have "zero-turn" anarchy, which was what you get if Religious: start a Revolution at the end of your turn, and at the beginning of the next, it is over. Now you are forced to be in anarchy for *at least* one full turn, and made all the players swear it was changed to "2 - 9 turns". ;)
