DYP + other mods

Anyway I downloaded and installed DYP about 2 weeks ago and have been enjoying it muchly. I was wondering if there were any other comprehensive mod packs that could be added on.

Also, I had the following complaints (along with the occasional unexpected quit) about DYP:

- being unable to build cities on desert or tundra (i'd also like to build on mountains too!)
- the nerfing of specialty units -- i like they idea of having much stronger units for a specific time period
- how damn long it takes to clear jungle considering how pervasive it is in almost every game
- tech progression is kinda weird
- also, some great wonders die (or die too early) that i dont think should, namely the sphinx & the pyramids

random ideas:
- during golden age, why not have every city have + 1 or + 2 culture too?

If anyone wants to point me in the right directions or agrees with some of my ideas, hook it up :)

Hi :wavey: Welcome to MacCivFanatics :D

There are a couple of other mods I know of, though I have spent very little time playing or even looking for mods. The Ancient Mediterranean one by Thamis looks pretty cool, and then there's the GOTM mod adapted by bluebox from the Game of the Month series. My All-in-One GOTM installer now includes bluebox's scenario file as well as the 25 MBytes of GOTM mod data needed to support it.

You may find one or two people here who have played the DyP mod, but there's a far bigger community of fans in the PC world. So I recommend you address concerns about it to the mod makers in the Completed Mod Packs forum, part of the Customisation and Creation area.

Re unexpected quits:

1. I assume you are running version 1.29b2? If not I recommend you update it using the updater in my sig. Earlier versions were not as stable in my experience.

2. How did you install DyP? If you used my drag and drop installer then it should have put everything in the right places. If you did it by hand then I know from bitter experience how easy it is to get something wrong.

3. You *may* be suffering from faulty graphics files. My theory is that the .pcx graphics file format is handled by custom code in the Mac version, but uses standard Windows libraries on a PC, and the standard libraries are better error trapped and more likely to survive a bad file. If this is the problem then I would expect other Mac users to trip over it as well, but I haven't heard any other feedback, good or bad, on the stability of DyP on a Mac.

You should install the GOTM mod in a separate copy of CivIII 1.29. The two mods are mutually exclusive as they require completely different text and graphic files in several places. You *could* switch by file swapping, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Re OS9: Sorry, no, I've stopped supporting OS 9 and haven't run it for over a year, even in 'Classic' mode. If you are running OS 9 then that might help to explain your unexpected quits. It's inherently less stable than OS X. How much physical memory do you have, and how much have you told CivIII to use?

If you need to install the gotm mod on OS 9 I can supply you with a zip file containing all the stuff you need. You would then have to transfer the components into the CivIII folder by hand. It's not rocket science, but you need to concentrate ;). Let me know if you want to do this and I'll create and upload the zip file. It's not a big deal for me, but it'll be a 25 MByte file so I don't want to use the server space and bandwidth unless you are going to use it.

haha well i actually have a bunch of computers (some old, some new) so some have just 9.2 on them. i did manage to install all of DYP onto it without making any mistakes and it runs fine. it just took forever.

all of my crashes are in OS X incidentally.

a shame you cant put dyp/gotms into one big civ for mac. id like to have lots of things available to me at once.

dont worry about uploading GOTM, ill install it onto my OS X machine and check it out.

thanks,
alec

awb,

A new copy of Civ3 29b2 only takes ~ 500 Mbytes so there's little excuse not to create each version as a separate folder. I have four - the 21g plus editor, DYP and two GOTMs. AlanH's installers are so easy to use.

NB Keep copies of the 21g and 29b2 updates to hand to create the 'master' versions before Modding.

I don't think that would ever be an option. DyP is a completely different game - different tech tree, different civs, units, resources, rules ...

Hi. I'm a newbie here so please excuse any dumbness on my part.

I have Civ3 1.29b2 (thanks to the link in your sig :)) and I really like the sound of DyP so I downloaded your drag and drop installer but I must be doing something wrong because nothing seems to be installing anywhere.

The installer has correctly located the Civ application folder but I don't know what to do next. The "Installing" and "Progress" bars are blank. What do I need to do to install DyP please?

The drag and drop installer contains no files. It is just a program to extract the files from a mod file set and place them in the right places in your Civ3 installation.

This thread contains a link to the mod file download site (post #16) and a list of steps you need to take to install DyP (post #18).

Oh, right. Thanks, AlanH, I guess I didn't look hard enough for the info.

Off now to get DyP on my system.... :)

No problem! I was very rude, sorry, I should also have said "Welcome" :wavey:

I have DYP and TAM but I find that the passage of time defeats me. It takes forever to get to the stage of irrigating in DYP, which means my cities do not grow.. Almost into the next era. Advice would be appreciated.

I think in both scenarios they have gone out of their way to slow the ancient era down to a more reslistic pace historically, so you are just experiencing the game as it was designed.

Your best source of advice on playing TAM and DyP is in the main forums for the mods. They obviously play identically in Windows and there are far more players with experiece of them on Windows than there are on Mac OS.

yah, you basically have to pray your capital is near flood plains or wheat. else than that, good luck. (yes, ancient era is very difficult but provides a good time to get ahead of everyone else if you get good position/expand well)
