I called that one. Hooray for Byzantium.

“I, Justinian, have been chosen to bear the heavy responsibility of protecting the proud Byzantine people. Will you stand with us, on the side of the civilized and the strong, or do you run with the numberless barbarians against whom we must always guard?”

I've seen confirmation that Justinian is in but none that the East Roman civilization is in. Here's hoping Justinian is the third Roman leader.

Hah! I never thought of that. Justinian as the third Roman leader. I guess it could happen.

Seriously, I'll bet a $10 brass nickel the Byzantines are in. I wonder if he'll look like the famous mosaic at San Vitale?

I doubt he would be a third roman leader. I'd much rather he be one because I'd rather have other civs in but it would be similar if they added in timur as a third mongol leader. He is actually similar to Justinian, he represented the old mongol empire and wanted to resurrect it by conquering the old lands of the mongol empire(he called himself mongol but he was really of turkish descent) under the empire of the timurids and he went on a conquering spree just like Justinian.

You got a link of justinian being confirmed?

I hope he IS a third roman leader . . . not to knock down the byzantines, but there are TOO MANY European civilizations in the game already. Adding in more every expansion pack just is annoying. I'd MUCH rather see some SE asian and Austronesian civilizations added in.

All these need to be included before Eastern Romans or Portuguese:

Cherokee Nation
Polynesia/Austronesia
Siam
Zapotoc
Iroquois

My list is getting smaller, but Europe is still way too crowded. Sometimes I'm just tempted to load up a huge european map since I seem to be playing Sim-Europe anyhow. Adding in new leaders to represent factions of single civilizations . . . such as justinian for rome, is a great way to start getting rid of the clutter.

lol, whos thunderfall?

y do thay need to be in befor east rome? thay never did anything sept get conqured, crushed, and destroyed by those who are more deserveng of owning the lands. thows who cant defend it shouldnt own it.

:D

I love the Byzantines!!!

:D

winddbourne, it seems to me like your objections are wholly based on the fact that you play exclusively on Earth maps, hence "Europe is too crowded." Believe it or not, there are actually people who play on randomly-generated terrain...

It won't matter to me if the eastern roman empire/byzantium is in this game b/c i will just invade them when im rome and make them my vassal.:king:

The same could be said for the Eastern romans, they got their behinds kicked by the goths and ostra-goths, got cut down to almost nothing by the muslims, and then got sacked by the western roman empire during the crusades, before finally being totally run over by the Ottomans who ruled their lands up until World War One.

They were an empire, they had their time, but when you look at the history of rome as a whole . . . they are a sad footnote militarilly speaking. Their best "legacy" is that they preserved Roman Civilization and passed it back west before they finally died off completely.

Gaius: Actually I don't always play on world maps, I do study history though and it annoys me that a lot of these "civilizations" are concentrated in one area of the world. If I was going to advocate a european civilization being added it would probably be Minoan Crete, due to their high tech level and amount of trade prior to being destroyed by natural disasters and co-opted by the greeks. Plus the fact that they were so culturally different from their greek descendants . . . a seafaring despotism with linear A/B script, versus the fractious greek city states with their many land-based governments and alphabetic writing (after the dark age).

While I don't advocate grouping all of europe into a single "European" civilization, roman civilization was a single glorious thing, and we DO have a higher number of european civilizations than anything else. With more coming all the time.
