El-J 03 ~ Going Rogue, AoI Style

Sorry to hear that Donkeyman. Hope you have a quick recovery.

Chaos Arbiter is up from what I see and if he doesn't go by today, then it is Maimonides.

I am not sure who is after that and will try to get a better list together. If someone wants in on this, I am sure we have room to add you into the rotation with all the drops. Game is just getting interesting so it would be a shame to see it stall out at this point.

Thanks. I found a site that breaks them down by ship class & has info on each, too.

Maimonides--my dad posted in this thread. He's very much a spammer! If he's not careful I may have to give him the ban stick.

Looking at his post count, he's definitely a spammer.:)

My dad has barely figured out how to email. I try to keep him away from the internet as that would only lead to total chaos.

As Klyden said the gunboats should be the only one's that sink in deep water (kind of like suicide galleys in regular C3C).

Good to know. Maybe my memory is bad, but I could have sworn I lost an early BB in Ocean while playing Russia.

Hey guys, I just broke my right hand so I can't really play Civ anymore. Sorry, but I'm gonna have to drop. Good luck!

Ugh. Internet porn claims another victim.

Heal quickly. Enjoy the pain meds.

I got my right wrist badly hurt when I was a teen & had to learn to use my left hand for everything for a few months. Sucked.

Game is just getting interesting so it would be a shame to see it stall out at this point.

I'm not going anywhere. Replacements would be good, though.

I read your latest notes & agree with everything.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not likely to be able to play this weekend (if my turn comes up this soon), and if I haven't at least spoken again by 1200 US Central Time Tuesday, pass it to the next person.

OK, ChaosArbiter, your self-imposed deadline has passed so I'm playing now. You're up after, followed by El Justo

Looks like part of Turn 46 has been played (the IBT is over & several units have 0 movement points), but it's cool.

Gonna take some time to name units, keep the Turn log & grab screenies, but I'll get her done & passed along ASAP.

My last turnset should've had some unit movement with the transports, no?
btw, you crack me up.
Donkeyman--Hang in there, bud.

Where's El J? You out there, Mister? Don't worry the Iggles couldn't be Minny either.

Week 45, 1900. Turn 46.

-Renaming units in Rykyu Islands:

1. Steam Transports to (TR) Saikio Maru (Wiki says it was a steamship that transported the body of Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa from Formosa to Japan in November, 1895), (TR) Tateyama Maru, (TR) No.2 Nagata Maru (Wiki says it was the 1st all-metal construction merchant ship built by Fujinagata Shipyards in 1900), (TR) Asagao Maru (Built 1889. Scuttled as a blockship off Port Arthur, 1904.) & (TR) Bingo Maru (Built 1897. Scrapped 1931.).

2. Japanese Infantry to (JI) 5th Infantry Division, (JI) 1st Infantry Division, (JI) 3rd Infantry Division, (JI) 4th Infantry Division, (JI) 6th Infantry Division, (JI) 7th Division & (JI) 8th Division.

(JI) 2nd Provincial Divison renamed to (JI) 2nd Infantry Division. (Turns out the former was renamed to the latter in 1898.)

3. A Japanese Cavalry to (JC) 1st Cavalry Brigade.

(Japanese cavalry didn't operate as divisions. Brigade was the largest cavalry unit size until 1933. They formed 2 more brigades in 1909, but it's too early for us to use their names. The 1st Cavalry Brigade was formed in 1901, but I went ahead & used it because it's only a few Turns early.)

-Renamed Japanese Infantry in Seoul to (JI) 9th Division & (JI) 10th Division.

-Renamed Japanese Infantry in Hamhung to (JI) 11th Division & (JI) 12th Division.

(Can't name any more divisions until 1905 because we've used the names of all the IJA divisions (13) that existed before then.)

(Can't name any artillery units as they operated @ the brigade level or smaller within the divisions already named.)

-Renamed Steam Transport in Kagoshima to (TR) Dairen Maru. (Built as Tenasserim, 1873. Purchased & renamed, 1895. Scrapped, 1907.)

(Can't name any artillery units as they operated @ the brigade level or smaller within the divisions already named.)

Why, you could rename them to the corresponding artillery regiments in the division. I.e. 10th Field Artillery Regiment for 10th Infantry Division, 1st Field Artillery Regiment for 1st Division, 5th Field Artillery Regiment for 5th Division and so on. Just look at the Divisions' OOBs and take the names from there. That's what I do anyways in historical scenarios. :)

It's my understanding that units in this scenario were designed to be division size. Also, the artillery units in this scenario are organized according to specific guns whereas the historical Japanese artillery units used such a variety of artillery pieces within each unit that they had big problems procuring ammunition.

I'm just gonna leave their names alone for now. You can rename 'em during your Turn set.

Week 45, 1900. Turn 46. Continued.

-Harusame Class DD southeast of Ryuku Islands renamed (DD) Hayatori. (We still have some Harusame Class DDs that need names, but we've now used all the historical names of this ship class so I'm leaving the rest alone.) It and (DD) Arare are moved towards Guam.

-(TR) Dairen Maru leaves Kagoshima bound for Taipei to await Raw materials or Paiwan Laborers.

-All Japanese Infantry (10) & Japanese Cavalry (7) in Ryuku Islands board Steam Transports & depart for the conquest of Guam. They are escorted by a Harusame Class DD. The rest of the fleet has already left for Guam & is roughly halfway there.

-The 75mm Krupp Mountain Gun Batteries (8) & Clorine Gas Cylinders (2) in Ryuku Islands board the remaining Steam Transports there & depart for Pusan. Korean cabbage fields make for better target practice than Okinawan rice paddies.

-Notice that Osaka has a garrison of 4 Home Guards while Sapporo (close to Russian territory) only has 1 so a Home Guard division is relocated from the former to the latter. The breweries of Sapporo are a tempting target. Best defend our beer supply.

-The Cultural Advisor says, "The French people are disdainful of our culture." Some things never change.

-The Foreign Advisor says, "The Spanish are cautious with us." How little they know...

The British are @ war with Russia. The French are @ war with Germany.

The Germans aren't doing as well in their war in China as they are in Europe. Looks like France could take Tsingtao:

aoiseigeoftsingtao.png

Looks like the British made some gains in Africa during their war with Germany. They took Mwanza, Bismarckburg & Dar-es-salaam:

aoieastafrica.png

Russia is about to lose a Perseviet Class BB to a British Quail Class TB in the ocean east of Japan:

aoirussiavsbritain.png

-Checking with the Science Advisor, we are set to have Artillery Doctrine in 2 Turns. Then, on to the next Era. Will follow Klyden's suggestions @ that point.

-Tokyo is producing 258 Shields per Turn! All Specialist Citizens are Taxmen.

-Change Osaka from Japanese Cavalry in 5 Turns to Publishing Company in 4 Turns. That will complete available Improvements there until the next Era. Convert 1 Scientist to Civil Engineer to complete the build in 3 Turns. Artillery Doctrine still completes in 2.

-Change Taipei's build from Transport to Missionary Post. Culture is important there with Chinese Fuchou & British Hong Kong as neighbors. Convert 3 Taxmen to Civil Engineers to complete it in 2 Turns.

-Change Pusan's build from Harusame Class DD to Law Enforcement System. Convert some Taxmen to Civil Engineers to complete it in 4 Turns.

-Seoul is starving so I take a Hills tile from Pusan & give it to Seoul. Both cities have zero growth now, but neither are starving. Seoul's Japanese Infantry build goes from 4 Turns to 3 Turns. The city has all available Improvements.

-Ryuku Islands is building a Steam Transport, but it doesn't have a Naval Base to make Veteran units, yet so I change production to Law Enforcement System & convert enough Taxmen to Civil Engineers to complete it in 5 Turns. City is losing 1 Shield & 5 Beakers per Turn to Corruption. It is also starving, but all tiles are being worked so there's nothing to do about that.

-Change Akita's production from Harusame Class DD in 3 Turns to Kashima Class BB in 5. I like big guns & I cannot lie. Those other suckas can't deny...

-Change Sendai's production from 75mm Krupp Mountain Gun Battery in 1 Turn to Coastal Fortress in 3. Convert 4 Taxmen to Civil Engineers to complete in 2 Turns.

-Here's what the empire looks like:

aoijapan.png

IBT

-Italy declares war on France! Our wine is better than yours! No! Our wine is better! Blah blah blah.

-Tokyo produces a Chlorine Gas Canister & Japanese Cavalry. A Newspaper Comany is ordered to be completed in 1 Turn. The people have to be able to read about our victories.

-Kagoshima produces a Japanese Cavalry. A Kashima Class BB is ordered to be complete in 2 Turns.

-Hamhung produces a Japanese Infantry. A Maxim MG Btln Japan is ordered to be complete in 8 Turns. I'm thinking defense, not offense, for Korea right now.

-Caught the Central Americans attempting to plant a spy! We put him to work digging a canal all by himself with an aluminum spoon.

-I can tell the French attacked Tsingtao by the pile of Raw Materials their troops dropped when they died, but I didn't see it happen at all. (I go into Preferences & turn on Show Friend Moves & Show Enemy Moves. I don't care if it slows the comp down, I wanna see what's happening.) The French lost @ least 6 units in the attack.

I love the story too!

Regarding some of the builds...I will go with how we want to play this as a team but building culture in cities that have 100's of turns for border expansions seems expensive. These buildings have a cost every turn with very little benefit. I'm more inclined to crank out more military units than every building possible.

Bear in mind, I'm a builder at heart. I like to build naval bases that build bigger ships, I like making ships that move stuff, producing guns with pointy things on the end of them and generally buliding things that go "boom".

So keep building...:)

Your turn logs look more like a story than a turn log. Not that it's bad, I like it very much! :)

I love the story too!

Thanks! Just trying to have fun & keep it interesting & entertaining & include plenty of detail so everyone knows what's going on. I am enjoying learning about this period, too. Have had to do allot of research to name units & find the old photos. It's pretty time-consuming, though.

Most of the old photos I'm posting were posted on Flickr & they've been very interesting, too. The ones with color were colored using a painstaking process of hand-tinting the negatives. I started using them to add some flavor when I didn't know how to post a screenshot, but they're so interesting that I kept going.

There was discussion earlier about finishing all the Improvements before the end of the Era so we're ready for the next when new ones become available. Also, I'm not entirely sure about what is a prerequisite for what. For example, someone said the Sewer Works are a prerequisite for another Improvement, but it's pedia entry doesn't say so I'm inclined to build them even where they don't seem to be needed.

Part of me just like to build a big, glorious empire.:D

You guys did a great job building up the military before I took the helm. I think I have what I need to clobber the Spanish & we do have cities building units because they have all available Improvements. Korea still needs more defense, but that's in the works right now.

I know the Improvements have an upkeep, but our economy looks very good for an island empire in a Sid game. I think we can afford it for now.

For all the Dad's out there ... button it, you young wippersnapper:lol:

Eight players is still a pretty good team. Replacements for Donkeyman & Zeletdude would be good, too.

I hopped ahead of ChaosArbiter this round so he's up next, but that list is accurate.

Next week, I'm traveling to Florida from Wed., 1/27 to Mon., 2/1. My wife is running in a marathon in Miami to raise $ for a charity & we're visiting some family. I don't have a laptop so just skip me if my turn comes up during that time.

Sorry, I didn't get to the computer @ all yesterday. Gonna play a bit right now before I go in to work.

hi all :) a big sorry for slacking off :p Kly is right - RL has been tough lately. i'll DL it and play it tonight. again, sorry!!

WAIT!

I'm playing right now. Then ChaosArbiter's up.

Week 49, 1900. Turn 77.

-Kashima Class BB south of Pusan renamed (BB) Kashima. It steams towards Ryuku Islands to counter any Spanish vessels from Manilla.

kashima.jpg

(Launched, 1905. Scrapped, 1924.)

(There were only 2 Kashima Class BBs historically. Someone has already named our other Kashimas names from other ship classes, but I'm gonna leave that alone for now.)

-Chlorine Gas Cylinder from Tokyo loaded onto Steam Transport south of Pusan & shipped to Pusan for storage. Gonna store all of these in Pusan as a last-resort defense for Korea if ever needed.

-Steam Transport in Pusan renamed (TR) Chitose Maru. (Built, 1870. I can't find any info on it's fate, but it was steaming out of Hakodate in 1901. At 456 tons, it was a relatively small ship. Haven't been able to find photos of any specific Meiji era Japanese merchant vessels, either. If anyone can, please post a link.) It docks in Pusan to await Raw Materials.

-(Gunboat) Hyuga, off Tokyo, steams toward Ryukyu Islands to join (BB) Kashima.

-(PC) Hashidate, at sea between Tokyo & Midway Island (as a scout?), steams toward Ryukyu Islands losing sight of a Russian Perseviet Class BB that was northwest of American Midway Island.

-The fleet moves into place north of Guam:

aoispanishconquestfleet.png

-(Gunboat) Hei Yen, (Gunboat) Azuma, (Gunboat) Ryujo & a Harusame Class DD dock in Ryukyu Islands to await reinforcements coming south.

-(SS) No. 1 & (SS) No. 2 drop anchor in Kagoshima. They're too slow to keep up with the gunboats & I don't want any unintended wars. (This is a govenment bailout for the brothels of Kagoshima that didn't make wise investments.)

-Japanese Cavalry from Tokyo rides to barracks in Kagoshima.

-(TR) Awa Maru moves into Kagoshima & drops anchor awaiting a full load of troops. There are 2 Japanese Cavalry there now.

-Colonial Conscript Worker in Hills northwest of Pusan renamed Korean Laborer. It an 2 Civil Engineers begin mining that tile. Looks like they just finished a road. They are ordered to keep any shiney rocks they find. We don't need no stinkin' minimum wage laws!

-The 4 Civil Engineers in the Hills west of Hamhung finish whatever they were doing. 2 of them are sent to mine the aforementioned Hills & they finish. The other 2 are sent to help with the roads under construction in the Forests south of Seoul. This also gets all Workers away from Korea's northern border in case a Spanish counter-attack arrives. Everything in Korea that can be mined, now is.

-New Japanese Infantry in Hamhung joins the garrison there.

-(TR) Dairen Maru arrives in T'aipei & drops anchor.

-Convert 11 Scientists in Kagoshima to Taxmen. Artillery Doctrine will still complete next Turn. Then we can build potato guns!

The city is starving so I take a Forest tile from Osaka & give it to Kagoshima. Both cities are balanced at zero growth now.

-Rush Publishing Company in Osaka for 740 gold. Maybe a waste, but they'll return to building units next Turn rather than in 3 Turns. Convert Civil Engineers to Taxmen.

-Convert an Entertainer to a Taxman in Hamhung. City still has 1 happy Citizen. (Must be the one who has shoes.)

-Convert a Civil Engineer to Taxman in T'aipei. Missionary Post will still complete next turn. "You're starving & naked? Well, read this Bible & maybe I'll come back later with some food..."

With only 1 Japanese Infantry, T'aipei needs some defense...

-Convert 1 Civil Engineer to Taxman in Kuril Islands. Sewer Works will still complete next Turn.

-Rush Law Enforcemnt System in Pusan for 646 gold. His Majesty rules with an iron fist! (A fanatic miltary helps, too.) Civil Engineers converted to Taxmen.

-Rush Law Enforcemnt System in Kuril Islands for 640 gold. Convert all Civil Engineers to Taxmen. City still needs several Improvements.

-Akita has a Sea tile that's not being worked so I correct that. Maybe our Culture just gained a tile from Vladivostok? If so, I missed seeing it.

That's it for this Turn. Gonna stop & get to work. Closing my store tonight so I'll return to play very late tonight. The war w/ Spain begins next Turn! Should have Guam & be on to Caroline Islands in 2 Turns. We also enter the next Era next Turn!

Village of Negishi on Mississippi Bay with Cape Honmoku in the distance ca. 1880s-1890s. Mississippi Bay was named for one of Commodore Perry's ships in 1854.

Saw that. Yes it is.

Still need to find a listing of Meiji era merchant vessels, though. I've been doing it the hard way by researching the ship-building & ship-owning companies in Japan at the time.

Looking at the screenie in my previous post, I see that we already had a ship named (BB) Kashima so I named a double. I also see that someone else previously made the same mistake by naming 2 ships as (BB) Katori. I'll get it cleaned up.

Week 49, 1900. Turn 47. Continued.

-The French siege of Tsingtao continues:
aoltsingtaosiege.png

IBT

-Our scientists discover Artillery Doctrine! Following Klyden's good counsel, they are ordered to research Airships, to be complete in 12 Turns, with Industrialization II to follow.

Get a bag. Fill it with a highly explosive gas. Attach combustion engines to it. Find somebody dumb enough to hang from the bottom of it all in a basket. 12 Turns to accomplish this...

(Here's what the new Era looks like for those of you (hosers) who haven't downloaded & played this incredible scenario.)
aoiera2techtree.png

-The French attack Tsingtao again, but fail to take it.

-Sendai builds a Coastal Fortress! A Kashima Class BB is ordered completed in 6 Turns.

-Tokyo produces a Civil Engineer! He's not very civil & can't engineer a light bulb, but he's a Civil Engineer...

Tokyo also produces a Newspaper Company! We can line our birdcages now. A Japanese

Infantry is ordered to be complete in 2 Turns. (This may be a waste of Shields. It can produce the more expensive Japanese Cavalry in the same time, but I think we have more need of veteran infantry right now. We have plenty of Cavalry to stomp the Spanish colonies.)

-Osaka builds a Publishing Company! A Newspaper Company is ordered to be complete in 3 Turns.

-T'aipei builds a Missionary Post... Shouldn't it be a Temple or a Shrine? A Steam Transport is ordered to be complete in 1 Turn.

-Kuril Islands builds a Sewer Works! Thank goodness! That place was really starting to stink! A Financial Institution is ordered to be completed in 14 Turns.

2846440611_f13b37292d.jpg

Doctor making a house call in Japan, 1873. Doctor looks like Willem Defoe...

-Pusan produces Raw Materials & a Law Enforcement System! A Research Lab is ordered to be complete in 20 Turns.

-Seoul produces Raw Materials! I tell the governor I expect the Materials cooked next time. Only our fish should be raw.

-Ryukyu Islands produces a Law Enforcement System. A Naval Base is ordered to be complete in 17 Turns.

-Hamhung produces Raw Materials!

Week 1, 1901. Turn 78. Happy New Year!

-Looking around the map, I see that France took Lome from Germany on the west coast of Africa.

-(BB) Kashima, at sea between Kagoshima & Ryukyu Islands, renamed to (BB) Stormrage. Let's not let this boat sink. It steams into Ryukyu Islands & docks. (Reminder: it was 1 of 2 ships with the same name.)

-One of the ships named (BB) Katori renamed (BB) Spacer One. Let's not let this one sink, either.

-(Gunboat) Hyuga arrives just north of Ryukyu Islands.

-(PC) Hashidate arrives at Rykyu Islands & docks.

-Civil Engineer from Tokyo is sent to help a Colonial Conscript Worker trying to mine the Hills northeast of Sapporo. Should be finished in 5 Turns; 100 if they're digging with bare hands.

-3 Raw Materials from Korea loaded on (TR) Chitose Maru & landed near Osaka. (TR) Chitose Maru returns to dock @ Pusan to await Cooked Materials.

-Only 1 Forest tile left to road in Korea & it's being worked on. 2 Civil Engineers & a Korean Laborer begin laying rails on Coal Hills east of Seoul.

-3 steamships carrying 2 Chlorine Gas Cylinders & 8 75mm Krupp Mountain Gun Batteries reach Pusan & unload. Weapons of mass destruction stored in Pusan. Artillery moved to Hamhung. Steamships head to & reach Kagoshima.

-Convert all Citizens in every city (except Osaka) on the home island to Scientists to get Airships in 7 Turns instead of 12.

-Convert a few Taxmen to Civil Engineers in Osaka to build Newspaper Company in 2 Turns instead of 3. Rest of Citizens become Scientists to get Airships in 6 Turns instead of 7.

-Convert all Taxmen in Seoul & Hamhung to Scientists to get Airships in 5 Turns instead of 6.

-Convert all but 1 Taxmen in Pusan to Civil Engineers to build Research Lab in 10 Turns instead of 20. Remaining Taxman becomes a Scientist.

-Change Tokyo's build from Japanese Infantry to Artillery School to also be completed in 2 Turns. Had wanted to build this in Kagoshima using it's BB as a prebuild, but Artillery School is not buildable there. Military Acadamy is a prerequisite.

-Convert all Taxmen & Civil Engineers in T'aipei to Scientists, but Airships is still @ 5 Turns.

-Convert all Citizens to Civil Engineers in Kuril Islands to build Fiancial Institution in 5 Turns instead of whatever the heck it was before. (I'm getting tired.)

-Convert 7 Taxmen to Scientists in Ryukyu islands to finally get Airships in 4 Turns. Convert remaining Taxmen there to Civil Engineers to build Naval Base in 9 Turns instead of 17.

-Converting all our Taxmen to Scientists brought our revenue down to 1175 gold per Turn, but there's nothing to rush this Turn which helps. Have 6864 gold in the empire's vault. That's enough bling for any rapper.

-OK, now we're ready for war...

I've been thinking about who to bribe into an alliance against Spain to keep them away from Korea. Russia or Germany would probably steamroll Spain right out of Europe. France has it's hands full fighting Germany & Italy. I don't want to screw up the balance of power in Europe. Italy was a good candidate, but then it went to war with France.

Final decision: none. Spain is down to 4 cities in Europe. Italy & Germany are @ war with France so Spain probably can't get it's troops through there @ all &, even if they get some through & all the way across Russia, I think we can handle 'em with the artillery & infantry we have in Korea now. We're going this alone.

Step 1: declare war!

I call in the Spanish ambassador & say, "hei." He says, "hola." I say, "no, not 'hi.' Hei." He looks confused & says, "hola" again. I order him beheaded.

Then I call a press conference & explain that Japan's honor has been gravely insulted the the Spanish ambassador. I expound upon the cruelty of bullfighting. I weep for the poor, down-trodden Pacific Islanders being subjegated by their harsh Spanish rulers. I announce that Japan will take up the civilized world's cause of ridding the Pacific of Spanish oppression. Thunderous applause breaks out.

aoispanishwardeclaratio.png

(What's with the eye patch? Is our Military Advisor a pirate or Moshe Dayan?)

Step 2: make sure everyone has enough ammo.

Step 3: banzai!!!

-Our fleet enters Spanish waters north of Guam.

1st, the Harusame Class DDs bombard. Of 9, only 3 hit, but that's enough to see that there are no ships in Guam & only 3 Spanish Colonial Infantry. Then 8 Tsushima Class CAs move in & bombard. Of 8, 2 make hits. The 2 Garibaldi Class CA Exports move in, but both miss. Both our Fuji Class BBs move in & they redline 2 of Guam's garrison. Now the big guns: 10 Kashima Class BBs. They redline the remaining Spanish Colonial Infantry revealing a Spanish Colonial Cavalry & 2 Colonial Sentry brigades which are also redlined.

Our transports land our 10 Japanese Infantry & 7 Japanese Cavalry outside the city & rejoin the safety of the fleet.

Guam will fall next Turn! The fleet will immediately move on towards Caroline Islands.

To be continued.

Ok we're on! It looks like a round of bombardment next tuen will do the trick.

With redlined units this should be a good opportunity to see some promotions from our units and hopefully a MGL.
Also, we should crank the science slider back up and convert the taxmen to scientists. The excess cash is not nearly as valuable as new techs and the fun stuff they'll bring. I would deficit research here if we need to since it will produce so many free techs with the wonders.

With all the libs, unis and research labs I'd think we can get 4 turn research again.

-Pusan produces Raw Materials & a Law Enforcement System! A Research Lab is ordered to be complete in 20 Turns.

-Seoul produces Raw Materials! I tell the governor I expect the Materials cooked next time. Only our fish should be raw.
 :rotfl:

I Gotta say, Maimonides: I love your sense of humor! I really enjoy reading your reports. The Humor, creativity and graphics are outstanding! Thanks a ton!

Two points of critic:

1. (minor point): (War)Ships should be named after the historical conventions.
2. Major point: New techs should be discovered every 4 and not 12 turns not to fall behind! It is urgent and important to have enough scientists and/or money for doing so!

Otherwise: Banzai!

You guys didn't read the whole Turn log.:p

That Tech started at 12 Turns during the IBT. I can't control squat during the IBT. After the IBT, I converted Taxmen to Scientists all over to get the Tech down to 4 Turns. Didn't have to touch the slider.

I understand that it's important to get techs in 4 Turns.

Thanks, Ivan! Hope you are enjoying the show as much as we are enjoying the game. It's nice to have an audience, too.

All the extras I throw in do make my Turn log posts take FOREVER to put together, though...

(minor point): (War)Ships should be named after the historical conventions.

Aw, man... Those 2 were named as a tiny memorial to deceased CFCers who contributed to all of us who play Civ3. I didn't think anyone would object.

The rest of the ships I named are accurate. Been doing lots of time-consuming research.

We have more warships (& army divisions) than Japan did historically during this period... More names will open up as time passes, but we'll probably have more units than historical names to give them from here on.

Stereoview of a Japanese band ca. 1899-1901. Rock on!

IBT

-Spain & Filipino Natives sign a peace treaty. They've learned to share their toys.

-The British navy makes waves. A torpedo boat & 2 cruisers steam up to Guam's waters from the south. A Steam Transport escorted by a cruiser leaves Shanghai heading south. The torpedo boat that previously sank the Russian Perseviet Class BB east of Japan pulls into Hong Kong for repairs.

-The Russian navy draws blood. The Perseviet Class BB previously spotted by Midway Island steams south & sinks one of the British cruisers near Guam without incurring damage. Several Russian BBs are steaming out of Vladivostok around the north shore of Japan & south along our coast.

Blocking Port Arthur was a great move, Klyden!:goodjob:

-The French continue losing units attacking German Tsingtao. Looked like 2 Foreign Legion & 4 cavalry bit the dust with no German losses. The French navy has showed up with several cruisers steaming north toward Tsingtao.

-Sapporo produces a Japanese Infantry! A Kashima Class BB is ordered to be complete in 4 Turns. (BBs are cheaper to build than Infantry. Japanese Infantry would have taken 7 Turns.)

2822802922_12ec2cebe5.jpg

Stereoview of a parade of old samurai ca. 1899-1901.

-Kagoshima produces a Kashima Class BB! A Japanese Infantry is ordered to be complete in 3 Turns.

-T'aipei launches a Steam Transport! (Crap. Now I have to find another ship name.) Japanese Infantry is ordered to be complete in 9 Turns.

-Seoul produces a Japanese Infantry! A Maxim MG Btln Japan is ordered to be complete in 5 Turns.

Week 5, 1901. Turn 79.

-(Gunboat) Hyuga reaches Ryukyu Islands.

-Japanese Infantry from Sapporo marches to barracks in Kagoshima.

-The 3 Raw Materials from Korea reach Osaka & are cashed in!

Onagadori bird ca.1908-1915. Tail feathers reported as 24 feet long. Tastes like chicken.

-It occurs to me that we can blockade Vladivostok as we did Port Arthur thereby neutralizing that powerful port. The Russians have allot of BBs operating from there. (Gunboat) Fuso, near Pusan, is ordered north toward Sapporo. (Gunboat) Hei Yen, at Ryukyu Islands, steams north as well to complete the blockade when it arrives.

-Kashima Class BB @ Kagoshima renamed (BB) Sagami.
sagamimpl5679.jpg

(Russian ship Perseviet sunk in Port Arthur, 1904. Salvaged & renamed by Japanese, 1905. Returned to Russia, 1916. Sunk, 1917. Getting tough to name our Kashimas...)

Steams to Ryukyu Islands.

-Japanese Infantry from Seoul marches to barracks in Hamhung. They begin learning key phrases in Spanish (just in case they show up) such as:
"I surrender!"
"Where is the bathroom?"
"The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain."

-The last road in Korea is completed. Timber Hills west of Pusan & Coal Hills east of Seoul now being laid with rails.

-The 3 steamships from Pusan arrive in Kagoshima & dock. There are 4 transports there now waiting to take on cargo.

-Steam Transport in T'aipei renamed (TR) Echigo Maru. (Built 1883. Can't find info on it's fate, but it was operating out of Yokohama in 1909.)

-The attack on Guam continues!

1st, we march around the city 7 times blowing on horns. When that doesn't have any effect, we build trebuchets & launch the carcasses of diseased cattle into the city. That doesn't seem to work, either, so we turn to more modern methods.

aoibombardingguam.png

The fleet bombards, red-lining all enemy units.

The (JC) 1st Cavalry Brigade attacks 3 Spanish Colonial Infantry destroying them & attaining "elite" status while taking some casualties (getting yellow-lined).

A Japanese Cavalry attacks & destroys the 4th & last Spanish Colonial Infantry & 2 Spanish Colonial Infantry attaining "elite" status & taking slight casualties.

The (JI) Imperial Guards Division attacks & destroys a Colonial Sentry Brigade taking casualties.

The (JI) 1st Infantry Brigade attacks & destroys a Colonial Sentry Brigade taking no casualties & capturing the city!!!

aoitakingguam.png

We only capture 1 Raw Materials, but it's better than a kick in the teeth. I missed seeing how much gold we captured.

A Colonial Government Building is ordered to be completed in 7 Turns. I leave all the Specialists as Entertainers so the city isn't in revolt next Turn when some Resisting Laborers are quelled.

-Raw Materials from Guam are loaded onto (TR) Akita whish sets off for Kagoshima escorted by a Harusame Class DD.

-(JI) 7th Division & (JI) 8th Division tasked to garrison Guam. Everyone else who has a movement point remaining is loaded onto transports & the fleet steams south toward Caroline Islands. (TR) Kobayashi Maru & (DD) Arare remain to load & transport the cavalry divisions that got shot up attacking Guam next Turn. The injured units will have to heal while @ sea.

-(TR) Echigo Maru from T'aipei, escorted by a Harusame Class DD from Ryukyu Islands steams for Guam to await Raw Materials from either there or Caroline Islands when it's captured.

-The 4 Gunboats & 2 Kashima Class BBs in Ryukyu Islands lift anchor & depart heading south to counter any Spanish ships that may come up from Manilla.

-Rush Financial Institution in Kuril Islands for 796 gold. Convert all Civil Engineers to Taxmen.

-A couple of other Improvement builds could be rushed, but they'd cost over 1000 gold so I'll let 'em build another Turn & check again.

-Current Victory Points top 5: British Empire 607, Russia 547, France 533, USA 476, German Empire 447. We've dropped to 6th Place with 441... Gotta get those Pacific colonies producing ASAP.

[IBT]

-France's attack on Tsingtao continues. The Germans lost a defender. Didn't see how many units the French lost. One of the French cruisers reaches Tsingtao & bombards it. More French cruisers come up from the south heading past Formosa toward Tsingtao.

-A huge British fleet comes out of Shanghai steaming south. It's currently next to T'aipei... Not good. A traitorous entrepeneur opens up a fish & chips restaurant there.

Two more British cruisers sail up to Guam from the south.

-Russian BBs are just steaming up & down Japan's east coast. The Perseviet Class BB north of Guam sinks another British cruiser without taking damage.

-Tokyo completes the Artillery School!
aoiartilleryschoolsplas.png

A Japanese Infantry is ordered complete in 2 Turns.

-Osaka builds a Newspaper Company! A Kashima Class BB is ordered to be complete in 3 Turns.

-The resistance in Guam has ended! A bayonet in the gut usually has that effect. They are, however, rioting. I hire some more Entertainers & order a shipload of salsa to fix that.

Eventually, they're gonna have to learn the joys of teriyaki.

-Kuril Islands builds a Financial Institution! A Stock Exchange is ordered to be complete in 10 Turns.

Japanese Financial Institution. Stereoview of an insect cage seller in Japan ca. 1899-1901. Pet crickets, beetles, etc. were popular.

Week 9, 1901. Turn 80.

-Getting a better look, the French have 9 Gloire Class CAs in sight heading north to Tsingtao. I'm just impressed they can operate that far from a bakery.

-The British fleet that steamed south out of Shanghai consists of 9 Diadem Class CAs & 5 Steam Transports. They are in the strait between Formosa & China. Being @ war with Russia, shouldn't they be heading north? The good news is they didn't land anything on Formosa. They could have if they wanted to.

-The 4 Gunboats & 2 Kashima Class BBs out of Ryukyu Islands continue south past Formosa without spotting any Spanish ships. Again, my intention with them is to counter any Spanish ships sent north from Manilla. T'aipei is not well defended, yet...

-Our fleet arrives @ Caroline Islands & bombards the joint!
aoibombardingcarolineis.png

All defenders are red-lined & a Spanish Steam Transport is sunk in the harbor. Our transports offload 7 Japanese Infantry & 5 Japanese Cavalry. ChaosArbiter will have the honor of taking the town next Turn!

-Colonial Conscript Workers finish whatever they were doing in the Hills between Akita & Sendai. They are all renamed Paiwan Laborer. (I think they all came from T'aipei & the Paiwan were the indiginous people of Formosa in the 19th century.) They are sent to help mine the Mountains & Hills east of Sapporo.

-The 3 Japanese Cavalry that were left behind in Guam last Turn board the (TR) Kobayashi Maru & head for Caroline Islands escorted by (DD) Arare. They are leaning over the bow of the ship shouting, "Hey guys! Wait for us!"

-Looking around the map, I don't see any cities that have changed hands in the many wars going on since Lome fell to France. I'm guessing France will continue to batter Tsingtao, but they will probably take German Garoua in Africa next.

-Convert 3 Civil Engineers & 1 Scientist in Osaka to Taxmen. Airships will still complete in 2 Turns.

-Rush Naval Base in Ryukyu Islands for 928 gold. All Civil Engineers converted to Taxmen.

-No sign, yet, of Spanish warships or a Spanish attack on Korea. Must be running the bulls in Pamplona.

Future Notes

-It's possible to take Caroline Islands next Turn & Davao the Turn after because there's only 3 tiles between them.

There are plenty of transports in Kagoshima to send reinforcements south to keep up the momentum & a few more BBs are about to launch.

-Airships will complete in 2 Turns then go for Industrialization II. See Klyden's notes a couple of pages back for more detail.

-Get some defense in T'aipei. It's arse is hanging out way too far.

-Watch the war in Europe. If Germany & France make peace, Spain will have an easier time getting to Korea overland.

-If we can get Spain's Pacific colonies mopped up before the war between France & Germany ends, we'll have a perfect opportunity to go for battered German Tsingtao. It's unlikely their war will last that long, though.

-Don't forget to start prebuilds in Tokyo & Kagoshima for the Wonders that come with Industrialization II.

-There are 2 Gunboats on their way to the coast near Sapporo. They can finish blocking Vladivostok's access to the Pacific. This is important because Russia is cranking out BBs there &, when the time comes, it's easier to sink them in port than deal with them at sea.

-If you talk to His Majesty, give him my love.

ChaosArbiter is up!
Prime Minister El Justo is on deck!
