Yeah but they're elves!!! They know what to do. They'd use the roots to stabilize the roofs of the mine and never ever strip mine.

And my view would be: They're elves, they'd never attempt to mine at all!

So I guess it is the team's interpretation of elves, or purely mechanics of being a bit powerful.
