Emperor Domination

I expect to post tonight. Alex has a lot of infantry, fortunately, he doesn't know what to do with them or we'd be finished for sure. I think he knows we don't have metal.

The AI always seems to know this...whenever I don't have metal I get attacked...

At first I was like WHAT! Infantry! Then I realized what you were talking about.

Ok Ok. Ground troops. Axes, swords, spears, you know, infantry. That is pretty funny though. There was no intent to deceive.

Sign #238 you've been playing too much civ. - The mention of the word infantry creates an instant association with a unit of strength 20 obtained by researching the assembly line.

lol, i had the same thing awhile back on these forums when i used 'cavalry' generically. the guy was like: "i don't think researching all the way to military tradition is feasible". and i was like: "dude, i'm talking about horse archers..."

75 AD - Well, I took a look around the map and hit ‘next’. The fort held up nicely. We dispensed of two swordsmen, but lost an archer. Then Nappy showed up.

nicetimingNappy0000.jpg

I turned him down and we got a demerit. Washington then declares on Nappy? That's what the game ticker said. Strange. A horse archer kicked at Munich and given it’s distance from the front, I queued up another. A couple of workers near Hamburg were in forested tiles. I presume they were there to chop units, so I chopped wood.

100 AD – Munich’s borders expanded and Christianity FIDL. Lost 2 CR1 cats attacking Mycenae. I didn’t attack with the CR2 cat first because I didn’t want to lose it. The city was taken and Mycenae was razed.

I had an interesting trade from Hannibal.

totradeornottotrade0000.jpg

I decided to do it. We kept construction and metal casting for later trading, got a nice tech, and what we gave away isn’t a big deal. So Hanny can make his UU, we don’t have any melee units anyway!

125 – We got our first scientist. Presently, he’ll pop compass. My guess is we’re waiting for CoL to pop Philosophy. It doesn't seem worth it to me to use him on an academy in Berlin as we're already teching nice. I'd rather wait to accelerate towards Liberalism. Continued to build military. Washington came at us with an offer.

cashandmonarchy0000.jpg

I turned him down. I added monarchy on his side and literature on ours but he wouldn't go for it. I usually trade heavily for techs early only to suffer the WFYABTA later in the game and not sure how folks here feel about trading. Still we’ve got a calendar resource and wine so those techs are appealing for happiness.

Our catapults from Mycenae needed healing so not much on the military side of things. The horse archers are moving to the front, and will be used for worker protection. In the end, I pulled the trigger on the trades. We went to pleased with Hannibal.

cashandmonarchy0000.jpg

We’ve got loads of cash now and access to two more of our happiness resources which will be worked shortly. I didn't add monotheism because it will only take a couple of turns to research ourselves and we don't have a religion anyway.

150 AD – Washington came looking for help and I turned him down as well.

Washingtonneedshelp0000.jpg

175 AD – We’ve got enough horse archers now so I switched Munich to a stable. Four turns is not bad and the extra 2 XP will be helpful (elephants as well). Lost an elephant to an axeman with a 90% chance of winning (par for the course for me). Realizing I can’t reload from combat frustration, I grab a beer and hunker down.

200 AD – Our fort is now gone. Swords and phalanxes took it down. Things look grim. They didn't raze it. They just occupy it.

225 AD – I took the fort back. The units in it were heavily damaged.

250 AD – No combat. Uneventful turn. Looks like Alex is going to try to take back the fort.

275 AD – Machinery is in. Without iron, it doesn’t do us much good. I selected music as the next tech. It looks doubtful that we’ll be taking Sparta so I thought if we could press it culturally, we might find some benefit. Plus, it trades nicely. CoL is 3 turns to research. It can be switched out, we can get CoL quick, bulb philosophy, and go back to music. Washington settled on our NW island. Spices are in at Berlin. We’re teching nice! Moving the workers southeast of Berlin to build a road and nab the wine.

300 AD – This turn began with a visit from Napoleon.

Nappythediplomat.jpg

Um yeah, my beer told me to turn him down. So I did. Notice, he was offering 70 gold so we didn’t earn a demerit by refusing tribute. Just said no to a bad deal. Our measly offensive armada headed for Corinth. It might be worth keeping, we're not getting Sparta. In hindsight, Alex dumped a few offensive units at the fort and they were repelled, the turn after I moved on Corinth. Berlin is building an archer, because we’re thin there and we need the defense. A stable is cheap there as well and should be considered.

Okay, moving the force up to Corinth may have been a grave error. He’s now whipped a phalanx. A city that had two units when I moved on it now has four. I’m not happy with how I left things. We lost a lot of units, a couple when the odds were high in my favor. One of Alex’s axemen is nigh dead near the fort but the only unit to move on it was a HA, who would be killed the next turn. We can’t afford to sluff units.

I think we should stick with music and dump the artist in hamburg. It would put a lot of pressure on Sparta. Getting Corinth will be a coin flip. We will need more units up there. Our borders are now brushing with Hannibal's. We can expect the -1 demerit close borders demerit with him. Long post, perhaps too much information. Let me know if my story telling ways are a little over the top. It can be toned down.

Here are our cities:

Good Luck with the war Galileo. Here's the save.

I'm fine with trading for Monarchy and Calendar. Washington, Hannibal, and Nappy are all second-tier traders, meaning WFY kicks in at 14 on Emperor (plus possible decay). So they shouldn't cut us off too soon. I wouldn't trade for Mono, though -- it does nothing for us.

Not sure about the culture-bomb idea. It might win the Rice, but I doubt it will flip Sparta any time soon. I think what we need is catapults, catapults, and more catapults, to take Sparta by force.

Can Hannibal be bribed into the war on our side?

Can Hannibal be bribed into the war on our side?

You are reading my thoughts. We should take the Iron city.

edit: Good thing we have Stable in Munich. Now we can train level3 units. Units which make distance from Munich to Sparta quicker than slow Cats. I hope that ww won't destroy us.

That's why I didn't trade for monotheism.

Hannibal was not willing to go to war during my turnset. He became 'pleased' with us during my turnset so this may change here quickly.

As far as techs go, it's either music or CoL. Seeing as how that rice tile has been the source of much discussion, I thought flipping at least that tile would be great for Hamburg. No, I don't think we'll flip sparta, however, taking any tiles down there makes it more difficult for him to manuever which I think is a nice perk considering we're outgunned in this war.

I'll kick myself again for going after Corinth. Our troops can be easily pulled back to lay seige to Sparta. However, he's got four units there and can easily whip more. We need to watch our backs and not push too far south and east. I can easily see a small force coming from Corinth before the war ends.

Where is Corinth? Is that the Silver/Fish city that we're planning to raze? What size stack do we have?

lilnev

It is the silverfish city. IIRC, I've got a total of four cats, one HA and one ele. Of course, there were only two units in the city at the time. He whipped one unit and got a second out. I think it now has two axes, one archer, and one phalanx. We should probably pull those guys back but remain weary of a small strike coming from that direction.

lurker's comment:
because you are talking about building an academy in the capital all the time ^^

(...) CoL and lightbulb Philo. Next GS will be an academy in Berlin for great teching with the GL and 'Mids.

[written in 175BC] Capital after constructing Academy ...

Turn 0 (300AD)
Inherited turn. I kill the axe with the cat that was sitting in Hamburg and give him shock. This will solve some phalanx problems. I moved some units around. I switch to CoL (4). Switch Berlin from archer (no hammers invested) to cat.

Turn 1 (325AD)
I give the new chariot out of Munich Flanking and Sentry. Munich --> HA. Bombard Corinth.

Turn 2 (350AD)
Parthenon BIDL. I send the workboat sitting in Berlin to explore northward. I bombard corinth down to 0%.

Turn 3 (375)
Oh NO!
ALEX UPGRADES TO LONGBOWS!!!
This is not good. I have to retreat the stack at Corinth, they have no hope, time to regroup. Washington offers fish for spices, I renegotiate for 6gpt.

If you look closely, you can see a Longbow in Sparta in the bottom right of that screenshot. I was too mad to take a screenshot of the L-bows.
Hamburg produces archer-->cat
Berlin produces cat-->cat
Chop at Hamburg to bring cat down to 1

Turn 4 (400AD)
Hannibal makes an offer:

Ahh No. I do not want to give up Machinery and some gold.
Hamburg cat-->cat Munich HA-->HA Hinduism spreads to Munich (just in time too).
We get CoL. That means time for the GS to get working! He pops Philo, and Taoism is founded in Hamburg! Missionary to Berlin. I set research to Engineering for trebs(12).

Turn 5 (425AD)
Tao in Berlin
Yawn. This is war?

Turn 6 (450AD)
Greeks come!

I attack the northern ones first. Cat retreats but brings phalanx to 1. HA kills cat. Cat kills Phalanx (another shock one we have 2 as stack defenders). Then an HA kills the southern cat and retreats back to the safety of the fort. My workboat finds a new greek city on the northern coast.

Turn 7 (475AD)
Upgrade an HA to medic.

Turn 8 (500AD)
GS born, keep him in Berlin for later lightbulbing. Maybe we should settle him there now, he's worth almost 16 beakers and a hammer. I see the greek capital for the first time!

Turn 9 (520AD)
Washington and Nappy declare peace. I make a big gamble and it pays off with this:

Elephant attacks at 50% and kills Greek elephant. He gains 4XP to get him to 12. Next turn once he is upgraded, we can begin the HE!!:goodjob: If it could get any better, he brings about the birth of our first GG!

Turn 10 (540AD)
HGBIDL (try understanding that one without being on CFC for a couple months) I send the GG heading to the front lines, he is in Berlin right now. Medic 3 anyone?
I think that we can attack soon:

I see 12 Catapults, 4 Horse Archers, 2 War Elephants, and a chariot. I think that the time is now! Greece can't hold up to that.

I think that we need to attack now and not let up until we have decimated Alex. If we don't do well now, we are in big trouble. So, next person gets to do some actual fighting! YAY.

I was just about to post that it might be best to pull back and defend on our own ground until we have a proper Stack o' Doom. And here you've gone and done just that. 12 catapults should be sufficient, and I agree that it's now time to go on offence. Sparta, then Thebes, then Athens? Reinforcements should include a couple of elephants and replacements for the suicide cats. And garison archers for the cities we plan to keep.

I wish it were my turn....

vra, you're up.

peace,
lilnev

p.s. If someone could post an updated overview of the Greek lands (with resource bubbles on), that would be great. With the new city, and Iron revealed under Thebes, I'm a little hazy on our long-term dotmap. Do we still want to keep Thebes, or raze and replant so we can work the Iron? I'm thinking keep for convenience, and to keep Hannibal from stealing the spot out from under us....

Ok, good couple of rounds folks.

I have to say I'm uncomfortable with us having laid off CoL for so long given what I've said before about the synergy of that tech with our traits...

I think the play thusfar has been pretty solid though. Things have been very tough with the AIs making demands left right and center! Hopefully Washington at least holds his own vs. nappy or nappy could end up being a real threat to us as the game progresses...have we been gifting techs to him? i think we need to keep smooth relations with him as much as possible. i've had him march all the way across a continent to declare on me, usually at renaissance era...

i think we have to raise and resettle silver city to the north, which means i think we should keep sparta and thebes. we can't really afford to be cranking out so many settlers when we need units mainly.

we had some really tough luck this game with the copper situation, no iron, and then alex's phalanxes making an elephant-based attack difficult.

but the more difficult the challenge is, the more glory there is in the end... :D
