'Endless Legend' beats BE in the Friday Steam sale

Threads are to debate. What about mine was inaccurate?

Your title misrepresents the intent of the article - the article has no direct comparison to BE in the slightest.

Quote from the article:

'Indie developer Amplitude Studios has seen their Endless series of games rocket past 1.2 million sales, as it enjoyed the top spot during Steam's Autumn Sale. Endless Legend led Black Friday sales.'

Again, in case you missed it a second time - 'ENDLESS LEGEND LED BLACK FRIDAY SALES'.

So it was the top selling game. So it SOLD MORE THAN ANY OTHER GAME.

What were the prices of the games? What are the budgets for each of the games? How do you measure success?

I'm not sure where the shock is in this. "A game that is better than BE sold more than BE" shouldn't really surprise anyone.

Actually, the sales figures for EL are significantly less that CivBE; apparently most people thought it was a sale sort of game, so bought it on sale preferentially. Ergo, by your thought process the sale and buying behavior of gamers tells us that CivBE is the better game.

Endless space, which I got over summer while I was excited about BE, is a very boring game. There's nothing bad per se, it just really lacks flavour for some reason. It's not as deep as GalCiv2, but is somehow even more dull.

I figured that Endless Legends would be the same, no idea if that's true or not.

As I picked up EL in said sale... it's a marked improvement over ES in almost every regard, the UI is tighter, the game oozes flavour and the tech tree is a lot more balanced and accessible than ES's weird quad-tree. It remedies almost all issues ES had in terms of presentation and "blandness".

On the other hand, combat is, while conceptually interesting, let down by the AI. It still has a lot of "fiddly" modifiers to races and tiles akin to ES which I'm ambivalent about. Sometimes the game enters a bit of a "lull" similar to ES (and GalCiv, I found).

For a young studio like Amplitude, it's a huge step forward but it's not a quite a "classic". But it can hold its own and certainly go up against Pandora or GalCiv in terms of fun and depth and feels slicker than Civ:BE (even if I think Civ:BE has more future potential, gameplay-wise, if Firaxis keeps patching it and releases an expansion).

I was assuming the sales figure was from the most recent steam exploration sale or whatever, which looking a second time I realize it is not. Not trying to extrapolate anything more than that.

Endless Legend may have done well in a sale, but fewer people are playing it than CivBE. That Steam graph shows about 2x people playing CivBE over Endless Legend, and interestingly no real bump for the CivBE patch. And CivBE's peak player number is 85,000 compared to 6000 for Endless Legend.

I like Endless Legend, btw, and think it's more fun to play than CivBE. The AI is not so good but the game is beautiful. And unique, it has much more of the fantastical element I was looking for than CivBE. Interesting game systems too, I like their approach to city growth, quests, and to diplomacy with influence points. Definitely worth taking a look at. I think CivBE is quite a strong game though and am hopeful that Firaxis will get it into a state that makes it as strong a game as Civ V.

I'm sure they are very proud.....I already own it...one of these days I may actually play.

Better is just subjective. I liked Endless Space, I hated Endless Legends. EL just gets so bogged down in the details that it loses any sort of fun for me. Same reason I could never get into Galactic Civilizations. Doesn't make one game better or worse, just makes one better for me personally.

I never finished a game of EL because I got bored before I got to the end game but Civ:BE I've finished 5 or 6 already and only been playing a couple of weeks. (I skipped Civ 5 so can't make that comparison).

As for that article, EL was discounted over 50%, of course it sold better.

The big complaint I have with Endless Legend is that you can't skip movement animations for units on the world map, so initial turns where you're just exploring around with your original army take a lot longer than they should.

I've also had a ton of desyncs when trying to play multiplayer.

I'm not suprised because there has been a lot of buzz around it and the reviews seemed generaly positive. The game kind of stands out. The factions have a lot of character, the art is wonderful and the world is intriguing. It kinda catches your attention. It did it for me.

Having played it, well...let's just say that at this rate Amplitude is going to be a credible challenger.

I have to say that the army/fighting system is a good compromise between MUPT and UPT. The combat AI is not stellar (no AI ever is, let's face it) and the way abilities work who goes first matters too much but it's good. Really good. The only thing I don't like is that how you can seem to wield less and less armies towards the end of the game because equipment resource costs ramp up while the resources needed get rarer. So it becomes kind of crush one stack with another stack kinda thingy which is mega lame and why MUPT tends to suck.

It's a bit boring how very few unit types there are in the game and the equipment management system is kinda tedious. I think the overall customizability is about the same level as non-unique affinity units in Civ:BE. Abilities seem to come mostly from equipment type instead of tier though and it's basicaly more numbers to different stats.

There's a lot of intriguing differences from the civ mould there. I don't know if the district system is all that great because it feels like there is so much empty space but I apreciate them doing away with workers. Call to Power did it really well ages ago. I actually played CtP before any Civ games and I always wondered why they kept workers in when they just basicaly add to tedium.

I do really enjoy how distinct the factions are - that's definitely an advantage Endless Legend has over BE.
