    EDGE#141: The OwN game

Dear friends. At last I can present a really unique game to you. This is a game where you, as a self-imposed rule, have either to SIP or if you like it better move once, but only once. Then we come to the point of this game (and the second rule): There are three NWs in the vicinity and you have to settle each of them before NC. The best thing is, that they are actually yours to grab and no AI will be annoyed, as long as you do it fast enough. The third rule is that you have to found a religion and choose a certain pantheon. I am sure that you will not be too challenged by this. As a comparison, I got my religion on t37, so you can do it as well. Obviously, you have to take OwN as your pantheon. Anything else would dishonor this game. Other than what is stated above, you are free to choose your path to victory. In my own opinion, every VC is achievable, but your execution needs to be decent.

Here we play as Byzantium on an unmodded Fractal map with Large size and Standard speed. So the civ to play goes very well with the tasks for the early game. If you want to, you can found a religion with both Mosques and Pagodas. That is very nice each and every time, isn´t it? To further stress the importance of religion, there are several religious CS on the map. About the AIs: you will at least meet Babylon, Carthage, England, Morocco and the Huns. I am sure that you will cherish your starting area and your closest neighbour. However, despite (or perhaps because of) the great start, this is no push over. A couple of AIs seem to do really well on this map. As a comparison, I won a SV on t290 and one AI needed only one spaceship part and lacked one tech. They were on track to launch on t300-305. I really hope that you will get caught by this game. Enjoy!

The screenshots are deliberately taken in such a way that the NWs can´t be seen in advance. I think it is an important piece of this game! I will reveal the NWs behind the spoiler, so please do not read before you have tried the start!

There is a short recap of my game behind the spoiler.

    Spoiler :

SIP. I sent my Warrior SE and he immidiately found a barb camp and only 1-2 turns later he stumbled on El Dorado for 500 g. My first Scout went NE and he found Uluru after scouting 4-5 turns. I bought a Settler and moved to settle Uluru first. I had not seen any CS and I was short on gold. That is why, I settled Adrianople suboptimally 1 tile off the coast to get Uluru in the second ring. Only a few turns later I had met Antwerp and La Venta and got gold from a ruin as well. I purchased Uluru for 115 g and got the first pantheon and eventually the first religion on t37. I went for max greed with OwN/Tithe/Mosques/Pagodasand enhanced with Plowshares and Itinerant Preachers. Second Scout was sent W and he found Kilimanjaro very early. I ended up building two Settlers at pop3 to also secure Kilimanjaro and El Dorado. I founded Nicaea as a proper coastal city but had to settle on the Cattle to get all the good stuff in range. In hindsight it actually was the best tile! It would have been possible to settle a coastal city for El Dorado as well but I opted against it due to gold and happiness issues. A nice area and five luxuries for four cities was good enough. However, I had only additional copies of the Pearls, so income was bad during the early game. NC on t94 but I built Oracle before that. William was my neighbour and he sent me an early TR and I returned the favour as soon as the production que allowed it. Education on t111.

I was pleased with the start (what else?) and the midgame started okay when I got Sistine on t138 and I managed LToP and GlobeT as well. Darius had a strong game and he got Uffizi and only by using a GE could I secure Louvre. Persia entered Industrial on t150 and Dido on t160. Wars were frequent, after all Attila was in the game. Attila againt Persia, Dido and Attila against Suleiman, Suleiman and Dido against Morocco, Babylon against Suleiman, Elizabeth against Rome and so on. Persia was first to pick an Ideology and chose Freedom. I chose Order and Carthage, England and the Ottomans followed. Fortunately nobody else went Freedom! Morocco was picked off before they could choose. Much to my surprise, Rome was on the recieving end against England and finally Elizabeth put Augustus to the sword. I had not expected that. Early on it looked to go in the other direction.

I was first to Industrial (by one turn) and rushed Eiffel. Persia was expanding on the expense of the Huns and they gained momentum, overtaking me in Modern and building Apollo on t240. I opted to amuse myself on the expense of the Netherlands and took Amsterdamin a short war. I reached Apollo approximately on t257-258. Persias production was very strong and they easily won the International Games and their Tourism was decent (but no real threat). Actually I was the cultural powerhouse in the late game despite the IG outcome. I could have gone for a CV here but I wanted to do a SV for a change. My late game SV routine was spot on. It really had to, because Persia was only some 10 turns from winning. Babylon had a decent game in third place but the rest of the pack were badly off the tech pace.

All in all a nice game with an extraordinary early game. SP: full Tradition, Piety 3, Aestethics 4, Commerce opener, Exploration opener, Order 7.

EDIT: Seems like the game file might get bloated. Vadalaz has a clean version of the starting file below on this same page (message #1016).

Love it! I will SIP. Tradition (since 3 NW, that fits) and use Piety for filler policies.

Really interesting questions. My own take on this (and I would like better players to comment as well), is that Observatories are great and I settle next to mountains, if the rest of the tiles are good enough for growth and hammers. However, earlier I gave up some good tiles for an Observatory but nowadays I really try to calculate the opportunity cost.

About NWs (in the context of them being "nearby"): If available with even subpar tiles, I always settle Uluru and most of the time also Mt. Kailash, both for the obvious benefit of a religion. FoY is unfortunately very rare but it definitely belongs to the "always settle" group. GBR, KSM, Kilimanjaro, Victoria, Sri Pada and El Dorado are NWs I try to settle most of the time but I will probably be a little picky regarding the tiles in the vicinity. GBR with Spain, as in EDGE#136, is of course outright game breaking as most wonders with Spain.

Mt. Fuji and Mt. Sinai are a little more situational but I try to settle them maybe half the time. The rest of the NWs I rarely settle, with the possible exception of Old Faithful, because of the additional happiness every now and then.

I very rarely consider NWs that are far away. Maybe I should be more active with those but it always brings a lot of security issues and other practical things into the equation.

To T50 in #141. Inspired by the Mediterranean SG, I'm playing with self-imposed rules here.

    Spoiler :

    Rules:

No Bees (no bulbs, no bribes and no GMu bombs)
No gold at all from AIs
No white peace unless offered by the AI
No worker steals unless it's an "actual" war, i.e. I'm trying to take a city or the AI declares on me

    Game so far:
    Spoiler Turn-by-turn :

T0: Settled in place. Started building a Scout, started researching Mining. Initial plan is Scout - Worker - something else while growing to pop 3, then start Settlers.
    T2: Ruin: 55 gold
    T3: Found Mt Kili
    T5: Finished Scout, started Worker.
T6: Found two ruins. Will delay taking them for a chance of getting a pop 2 to pop 3 ruin on turn 8.
    T7: Warrior sees Babylon's (?) borders.
T8: Constantinople grew to pop 2, I took the ruins. Spearman upgrade and 20 culture. Opened Tradition. Pop 3 in 12 turns, Worker finishes in 7, so there will be 5 turns of production before settlers. I'm thinking double scout with a forest chop.
    T9: Found Uluru.
T11: Met William, finished Mining, started Archery. I'm thinking Scout - Archer - Settlers now.
    T12: Ruin: Pottery
T13: El Dorado! Ruin: barb camps. I purchase a Settler.
T14: Cleared a barb camp near Uluru with some help from William's archer to level up my Scout.
T15: SP: Oligarchy. Sight promotion on the Scout. Constantinople finished Worker, started Scout.
T16: Started chopping the forest on the plains hill.
T19: Finished Archery, started Sailing. Constantinople finished Scout, started Archer.
T21: Constantinople finished Archer, started Settler. Chopping more forests.
T22: Founded Adrianople, bought Uluru tile for 115g. Adrianople started Worker.
T25: Pantheon: One with Nature. Met Rome.
T27: Ruin: Population in Constantinople from 3 to 4. William settles Utrecht very close to Adrianople. We'll be razing that eventually.
T28: Constantinople finished Settler, started Settler. Met Babylon.
T29: Finished Sailing, started Calendar. Switched from Settler to Workboat in Constantinople. I want to secure a lux trade.
T30: Ruin: 20 culture. Getting a lot of late ruins. Met La Venta.
T32: Constantinople finished Workboat, resumed Settler. Pearls <> Dyes with William. Founded Nicaea, started Worker there.
    T33: Ruin: map.
T36: Finished Calendar, started Animal Husbandry.
T39: Constantinople finished Settler, started Granary.
T40: Finished Animal Husbandry, started Bronze Working. Constantinople changed production to Caravan.
    T41: SP: Monarchy.
T46: Finished Bronze Working (no iron), started The Wheel. Second religion (first went on T45). Tithe, Pagodas, production from fishing boats. Constantinople finished Caravan, started Workboat.
T47: Sent William a trade route. Adrianople finished Worker, started another Worker.
T48: DoF with William. Founded Antioch. I could've settled it earlier, but I wanted to get the DoF first, because now I have the reckless expander penalty. All AIs I've met went Liberty, but they aren't expanding. Babylon will almost certainly attack if the penalty doesn't disappear soon. Antioch started Granary.
T50: Finished The Wheel, started Optics. Constantinople finished Workboat, started another Workboat. Pearls <> Truffles with Rome. William's sending me a trade route, but he never bothered to clear the barb camps. This stupid hand-axe survived with single digits of HP and will pillage William's caravan, spawning another unit...

As you mentioned, Iron is a problem. However, at least Coal is no problem in this game!

There's actually a 6-iron jungle hill in Antioch's third ring that I didn't see at first.

I've played to 81. Lack of workers and gold is painful, but otherwise things are looking good.
    Spoiler :
TL;DR: DoFs with both neighbors. Enhanced religion with RC and IP. Planted 5th city for the Citrus. Allied two CSs. Finished Tradition. Not sure what I'm taking next; possibly Patronage for FP later. Will try to go for late Colossus and Oracle here, but there's a good chance I'll miss both.

    Spoiler Turn-by-turn :

T50: I decide I don't need another workboat right now and start an Archer in Constantinople instead.
T51: Barbs pillage William's caravan. William finishes Terracota Army, maybe he'll kill some barbs finally. Reckless expander penalty is gone.
T52: I think the barb hand-axe that spawned on the Dutch caravan pillage is now going for my caravan and there's not much I can do. William loses a settler to barbs.
    T53: SP: Landed Elite.
T54: Met England. Archer done in Constantinople, started Granary.
T56: Optics finished, started Trapping. Constantinople finished Granary, started Lighthouse. Nicaea finished Worker, started Granary.
T58: Cleared a barb camp for La Venta with the Dutch Settler in it. A worker and a CS quest, sweet. Adrianople finished a worker - I have 3 workers near this city now. I decide I can chop out a quick Caravan and send it to Babylon.
T60: Trapping done, started Masonry. Going for Construction here. Just in case.
T62: Constantinople finished Lighthouse, started Spearman. 3 turns to finish the Spear, 3 turns to grow to pop 6. Plan is to get another settler afterwards and plant a city between the capital and Antioch for the Citrus.
T64: Finished Masonry, started Construction. Adrianople finished Caravan, started Granary. Will send Caravan to Babylon.
T65: Constantinople finished Spearman, started Settler.
T67: Connected Salt for La Venta, allies now.
T68: Nicaea finished Granary, started Shrine.
T69: SP: Aristocracy, Tradition finisher. Finished Construction, started Writing.
T70: Enhanced religion with Itinerant Preachers and Religious Community.
T71: Finished Writing, started Philosophy. Constantinople finished Settler, started Worker. Still need more workers.
T72: Nicaea switches production to Library. Forgot to do it last turn.
T73: Cleared a camp and returned a worker for Ormus, allies now.
T74: Caravan to William ends. I'll send food to a city I'm about to plant now. Got Embarkation for a Scout in Ormus.
T75: Founded Varna, send Food to it, started Library. DoF with Babylon. Upgraded two archers to CBs, will move them to a barb camp targeted by Jerusalem.
T76: Constantinople finished Worker, started Workboat. Running out of happiness, but this boat will bring 4, Citrus is another 4 and I have 5 Pagodas to buy. Should be good enough for a while.
T77: Met Attila. Finished Philosophy, started Iron Working. Maybe I can get Colossus here?
T79: Constantinople finished Workboat, started Library. IW in 4 turn, Library finishes in 4 turns.
T80: Antioch finished Lighthouse, started Library.
T81: First in crop yield. Iron Working will finish one turn sooner than expected.

I'm going to give 141 a try. I'm a sucker for settling on luxuries so I'll move once to the Spices and settle there.

#141 Seems like a nice game, I don’t think I can win a SV before turn 300, but lets give it a try

The scientific AI, which came close to win in my game, actually starts next to a notorious warmonger. If you can influence that relationship early on, your game might turn out very different. Basically it came down to my scouting not being good enough.

Only now did I notice that your city is one tile closer to the Iron than mine was. Eventually I still got the iron but by then iron was more or less irrelevant.

I will make a bold statement and say that I would be surprised, if you aren´t pleased with the selection of NWs!

My 141 is not going great. Almost certainly I will play it again from T0 because it is a start that begs abusing map knowledge. Spoiler to make the game half as hard, while following all the OP rules.
    Spoiler :
Send starting Warrior SE for first three turns. Your are welcome. Thank you Nizef for another great map!

I had to check and see if T141 had raging barbs, whew. And for some reason the barb turn is taking like 20 seconds, and its only like T45. Anyone else seeing this? The AI Civs and CS take a second then the barb turn takes forever.

I'm having some trouble with the file as well. Takes a very long time to save and load the game, and it's crashed once for me already. The map is very nice though.

That sounds unfortunate. Is there anything I can do? Like saving the inital file under a different name or something like that? But I am happy you liked the map, because so did I.

I just checked my autosaves and it seems the file got bloated every time I saved it. No idea what's causing it, but it's 2.9MB on turn 130 and I can't load it anymore. I thought this was a problem with hotseat games only, but evidently files can get bloated in SP as well.

Edit: I tried the unbloating mod that I've been using. I couldn't salvage my turn 130 file, but the mod did work on a T121 save.

Edit 2: I took the liberty to unbloat the initial save as well. I've attached it to this post.

Thank you! I edited the inital prsentation of edge#141, so that players will find your save file easier.

Yep, that's my issue too. Loading takes forever. The file is 2.5MB on T45. Can you direct me to the unbloating mod @vadalaz ? I don't really want to start over.

Save File Unbloat in Steam workshop. For hotseat files you'll also need Custom Advanced Setup Screen.

What I do is enable the mod, load the corrupt file, and save it. Trying it with T130 save crashed my game, but T121 worked fine. In hotseat games I don't even start the turn and just save at the player screen.

I hit a road bump in #141, but overall it's going well
    Spoiler :
I made a modification to my self-imposed rules: all GWAMs should be turned into great works, and all GSEMs should be planted, not just Musicians and Scientists.

Colossus had been built earlier and I just missed the notification apparently. I also decided against Oracle because there was still so much infrastructure to build everywhere.

I beelined Metal Casting and timed it with my next policy to open Exploration. 5-city NC on turn 100; Compass - Machinery - Education next, taking the +3 hammer policy along the way. I really liked my 5-city empire in early Renaissance - top food and hammer demos, pretty much all infrastructure built in time, and a nice army as well. I attacked the Netherlands with XBs and ran into a lot of resistance. William had Defender of the Faith and an endless stream of Pikemen.

Then the road bump happened - Attila declared war on me. Why me and not his neighbors I'll never know - he appeared friendly the turn before, and now during the war there are no red diplo modifiers. Anyhow, he moved in with 5-6 Triremes. I'd been planning to attack England after the Netherlands, so I sent my ships to sail around the continent. This meant I had nothing to kill the stupid Triremes with. Attila plundered all my Cargo ships and pillaged all the Pearls, cancelling a few lux trades. The timing was unfortunate, because I was razing a Dutch city at the time, so I temporarily had 15 unhappiness.

Attila sent in a couple of Caravels and Galleasses a few turns later and then there was nothing. This was the extent of his attack - 6 triremes, 2 Caravels and 2 Galleasses. We're still at war because Attila wants me to give up a city. He'll pay for this soon enough.

Anyway, I crushed William and let La Venta do the dirty work of eliminating the Netherlands. England is next, but I need to make 1000 gold first to steal two of Lizzy's city-state allies. My level 3 spy died on a 85% coup attempt unfortunately.

This ruleset is quite interesting. With a start as good as this one, you can still be competitive with Deity AIs in terms of food, production and army strength, but I think there's not much you can do about the shortage of gold until much later in the game.
