The subseries MIDGE consists of:
1. Finland (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size. Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is Finland), Page 26
2. The Papal States (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size. Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is The Papal States. You also need Austria-Hungary.), Page 27
3. Phoenisia (Continents, Standard speed, Standard size. Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is the Phoenician civilization.), Page 27
4. Norway (Ice Age, Standard speed, Standard size. Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is Norway. You also need the modded civs Finland, Iceland and Scotland.), Page 29
5. Belgium (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is Belgium), Page 30
6. Tibet (Pangaea, Standard speed, Standard size, Otherwise unmodded but the civ to play is Tibet), Page 49

This my EDGe #147 Netherlands 2nd Liberty try at T200.
  1. Collective Rule before Citizenship; I really should have known better.
  2. GS from Liberty finisher (instead of GE).
  3. I got every bonus resource tiles within the 3rd ring of a city. :) (Only thing I missed was one hill. [With my 1st Liberty play, I missed two Deer.])
  4. Tradition filler instead of Exploration, since I had a couple cities that were not Coastal.
On the downside, Gajah was not feeding me Settlers, so I had to build all my Workers. But I am at least 20 turns ahead of where I was with my first Liberty play. I will be fourth or fifth to Ideologies, but first to Freedom.

Screenshot shows my 95% effective blocking of the AIs. Note the two Scouts sitting on what I think are my only two vulnerable tiles. Spoiler text is something of a lightweight log.

Shoshone still settled on the northern ice, taking one Tundra from me. (Naturally, that spot spawns Oil.)

My final 350-396! Not one of my best games, but a very good learning experience! Thanks @Nizef for the game and for the unique style of us playing it.

Spoiler :

352. I liberated France but gave myself Revolutionary Wave by doing this since he is still influencing me even if he was dead for all the late game. I live with it.
353. The Great Firewall goes to America. Elizabeth becomes Afraid of me and proposes a friendship. I accept.
354. I get huge loans for half the money normally given by a friend and buy a bomber.
355. I sell Vilnius to England for 2600 and buy 2 bombers and a lancer to act as Vilnius capturer.
Mongolia has advanced weaponry that I need to capture with my Destoryers... but they are slowing me down. Ghenghis also is basking in Nuclear Missiles.
Peace with America!! This is huge.I need to use the 10 turns of peace to bring 2 carriers with 2 atomic bombs each, and then quickly snipe the capital city and also Moson Kahni, to liberate or capture the Shoshone, who I haven't yet even met.
356. America discovers Satelites, 1 turn before me. I should get Hubble without too much difficulty.
I capture-liberate-sell-repeat Vilnius a few times for 5000 gold. I propose my ideology to the United Nations.
I capture Valleta and gift it to France who liberates it. England lost their ally.
357. I discover Satellites and the map and I see The Fountain of Youth. Too bad I can't use it for now. America is building Hubble in 6 turns. But I am building it in only 4. I have to be careful as the golden age ends in 3 turns.
I captured 2 Mongolian cities and gift them to France. Pay America to DOW Mongolia. Send diplomat to England. I buy an Inquisitor to try to give myself 15% prod in the capital from England's religion.
358. Mongolia nukes America and they want to surrender to me. Great. I capture Wellington and Singapore from Mongolia, liberate them, and make peace. I sell Vilnius to England.
A merchant spawns and I build my first Custom House. I take 180 gpt from Mongolia.
359. America and Mongolia nuke themselves again.
The inquisitor managed to extinguish my own religion and now I have +15% bonus production.
One of my submarines discovers that England has a swarm of nuclear submarines at their disposal.
361. Built Hubble!! America is Afraid of me. I have found a way to make some easy money by capturing and selling Antananarivo. I can do it around 10 times per turn for 500 gold each sell. So around 5000 gold per turn from this. A small amount, but each gold helps now. Policy: Elite Forces.
363. America is getting nuked again by Mongolia. I sell Antananarivo 10 times and Vilnius a few times and obtain Elizabeth's votes for Autocracy.
364. Stole Advanced Ballistics from England! Another spy dies in Washington.
366. Stole Ecology from England.
368. Rome is willing to vote me as the Leader for 10 bucks. I assume that's because he knows his votes are not enough at all for me to win.
370. Computers researched. America is very close to victory. I am making final last-second save preparations. A nuclear submarine armed with a Nuclear Missile awaits in the ice. A carrier with 2 atomic bombs will bomb Te-Moak to liberate The Shoshone ASAP.
373. Bulbed Robotics. The situation is critical. America has now reached 1000 tourism and also needs only 2 more parts for the spaceship. America has conquered almost all of the Mongolian Empire. Only a small mongolian city remains and if it falls I will lose 200 gpt from Ghenghis but I am sending 6 destroyers to at least liberate Mongolia and make them vote for me.
I have given Vilnius to France and they liberated it. Unfortunately I've done the same with Antananarivo but they puppeted.
374. Mongolia is taken out. I bulb for Nanotechnology but need 200 more science for the tech. In 2 turns I have to attack America and in 3 turns I hope to have his capital and to liberate Shoshone.
375. Revolutionary wave -70 unhappiness. Thankfully time to choose policy and I took Police state, 3 happy from courthouses and come back to zero.
377. War with America begins. I nuke them 4 times and capture 2 cities.
377_war_begins.jpg

378. I propose to ban nukes. I meet The Shoshone by liberation. He is in the Classical Era.
379. Lost an elite Fighter trying to rescue an XCOM that will most likely die next turn. Captured 3 more cities and gifting them to the Shoshone.
380. The Xcom survived, I nuke America again and I catch 1 tile from the Shoshone accidentally so now they are at war. They also adopted Freedom while in the classical era.
381. America's tourism is only 850 now low from their peak of 1100 and Rome still has the highest culture despite being crippled all lategame and he should be able to keep me alive for 20 turns at least.
The deal where I bought all of England's aluminium ends soon and I expect that I have to nuke her. She has amassed incredible amount of army and I will need all 3 generals to citadel there soon and to steal a tile of 8 aluminium.
Gold is becoming a problem but I have a nice gold reserve to keep the war machine going for a while.
Klauswits legacy effect ends and I feel it.
I capture Kathmandu and I annex to sell an expensive building and trade it away without choosing the production. I am forced to reload the turn :( as the game asks me to choose production when I no longer have the city.
382. America is building Oxford University...again...
383. I lose a destroyer and an xcom. I liberate Mongolia.
America is building SS Engine in 2 turns..... I have to surround his city with XCOM and next turn I have to take it at all costs. Otherwise give his original capital back and block the parts somehow but if he doesn't give open borders I lose with this.
Rome builds Apollo program. England will soon have aluminium and start building more parts. Desperately, I decide to sell all science buildings, annex Te-Moak and buy an Atomic Bomb. I am desperate for nukes and gold. I am actually thinking I might lose after all this hard work.
383atomic.jpg

384. Nothing died, thankfully. I sell all public schools to buy another Atomic Bomb. I nuke America.
385. I nuke America again and capture all their remaining annexed cities.
385.jpg

386. America has only puppets but they did not annex any city so they can't build anything. England built 1 more part and I worry that I have to first stop Elizabeth before winning.
This looks very bad. I have to nuke Elizabeth very soon or the defeat is coming.
387. I am panicked as I see Elizabeth building both parts she needs now in 2 turns. Thankfully I was expecting it and I have the atomic bombs ready but all my XCOM are injured! I worry that the capital of England will move on an island where 2 cities are located and they will be out of my nuking range and well defended. I realize I have to surive only 11 more turns because I'll win a diplomatical victory at next world leader vote.
Public opinion has reached -90 unhappiness.
388. War with England.
Start of war, all my units are gathered and the fleet is coming quickly thanks to Exploration + The Great lighthouse. I have around 10 elite battleship and 6 carriers with 5 elite bombers, a few missile cruisers and a dozen nuclear submarines.
england_war_388.jpg

I start the offensive by launching 5 atomic bombs that catch 2 cities each time and destroy as much anti-air as possible. I capture their capital immediately and move the XCOM in positions.
The new capital moved to York and I immediately blocked as many tiles as possible there. I move in with brutality against Elizabeth but lose many units too. I start to lose patience and make many mistakes. Nukes have been banned. I have one or two atomic bombs left, I keep them for America.

End of war with England has her having only the fake cities I had settled for her, in empty snow.

394.jpg

391. I nuked America in the city of Paris. I have 1 atomic bomb left. I spam XCOM in all cities and move them in to pillage and attack all important cities.
396. I capture Rome after surrounding the area with XCOM. I also capture Karakorum using same XCOM and air support. I also caused a Revolution and the Shoshone adopted my ideology.

A tough game that required a lot of lame tricks to avoid losing. I made so many mistakes in my initial strategy that it hurts my head, but I'm happy to have won in the end.

EDGE#149: The fourth owner of Marrakech

My experiment with quick speed is growing to three or maybe even four games. This time around we play as France on a Tilted Axis map with small size and quick speed. The starting location is very, very good and your closest neighbour is peaceful, albeit in my game they went Liberty and I had to hurry up with my Settlers. Furthermore, you should get access to Coal, Aluminium, Oil and Uranium. That is always nice! The aim for this game is, surprise, surprise, to achieve a CV. But there is one twist: you must be the owner of Marrakech at the end of the game. In my game they were conquered early by their closest neighbour. However, an even greater power came along and their CS ally actually captured Marrakech as their secondary city. Later, I thought that the city had a beneficial location for a CV and thus I conquered it for my own needs and now I want you to copy that... This is tougher than #148 with Sweden but still this is by no means rough. I am sure you will enjoy this!

I played according to HoF rules and also submitted my win. There is a short recap of my game behind the spoiler.

Spoiler :

I settled one tile to the W on the Silver. Met the Netherlandsvery early but they spammed cities so fast that I really had to build settlers before doing anything else. My three Tradition expands were to the E, SE and S because I could not settle anything towards William. Second religion with Religious Idols/Tithe/Pagodas/Plowshares/IP. I went for an early ToA and also got it. I built NC on t63 and then Borobudur and HG after that. Askia had a good start and more or less killed Morocco (left them with Fes).

After universities I went for the midgame wonders and got Sistine, LToP and Louvre. Morocco was eliminated by Siam while Japan spammed a lot of cities without doing much. Ram went on a city founding spree of his own as he also eliminated Askia. Thus, we were down to 3 AIs plus me. I was the only to pick Freedom, while Ram and William opted for Authocracy and Oda chose Order.

In Modern I built Eiffel, Broadway, ChristoR and SoL. Ram had a massive culture pool and everybody hated me (mostly for the Ideology choice but still). Thus, winning was slow and since my science was decent I also built Hubble, SOH and GreatFirewall before finally winning. The crippling of GMus really hurt my end game and thus it took me until t207 to win. Marrakech was in the middle of Siam´s territory and that is why I made it my target. After conquering it I bought an Airport there and started to air lift my GMus there. Interesting game in all its simplicity and it was nice to build all those wonders! SP: full Tradition, Piety 4, Patronage 4, full Aesthetics, Exploration opener, Rationalism 4 and Freedom 6.

My 3rd run at EDGe #147 Polders Galore was very enjoyable. Thank you @Nizef for the map!

I just did my usual lazy SV (T361) with some low-stakes wars to hold my interest. Pocatello built Hubble at T292, so that did make me a bit worried. That really threw me off how I normally work the tech tree, and around T350 (when I thought the game was close to over) I realized I had missed an SS part! At that point, I already had three cities building parts, so I needed another city with an SS Factory. And if you have played this map, one of the surprises is no Aluminum! That interrupted my SS builds twice. Napoleon had five parts, so it was close!

Spoiler shows T250 screen shot and some description of what is going on.
Spoiler :
Lol, what happened with The Hague?
civ5ss-edge147-polders_galore-t250''.jpg

T211 I am fifth to Ideologies, 1st to Freedom, so I take both first Tier 1 happiness tenets.
T212 Happiness is a problem, but manageable.
T227 Liz agrees to DOW Pocatello in ten turns
T231 Napoleon agrees to DOW Pocatello
T235 DOW Pocatello.
T236 Genghis and Liz DOW Pocatello; Liz has a substantial fleet.
T237 Pocatello has a stupid number of units in Duckwater. I am not sure how I missed them, since Duckwater is land-locked. Where did they come from?
T238 I am goin to loose The Hague, so sell to Genghis.
T240 Pocatello captures The Hague.
T240 Liz backstabs and denounces us.
T248 Get the FLeas just in time as Amsterdam is under attack; flip to Order
T249 Elizabeth builds Broadway.
T253 Take back The Hague.

Spoiler shows T300 screen shot and some description of what is going on. I am still at war w/ Pocatello.
Spoiler :
Why does Liz have all those units in your territory? Did Duckwater move?
civ5ss-edge147-polders_galore-t300''.jpg

T264 Pocatello builds Apollo Program.
T266 Napoleon captures Karakorum.
T267 Pocatello approaching Nijmegen with a Navy.
T268 Pocatello’s UU landing near Nijmegen.
T269 Capture and raze Duckwater.
T270 Delete a couple workers to stay out of the red.
T271 Sign another DOF w/ England
T272 Genghis seems to be down to one city, Valetta.
T273 Liz beats me to Kremlin by five turns.
T277 85% coup fails in Almaty, live with it.
T278 Nijmegen getting hit by GWB.
T279 Make peace w/ Pocatello because I do not want to loose another Artillery
T283 Building Oxford in Breda because Amsterdam is still working on its Research Lab.
T284 Pocatello plants a new Duckwater on my northern ice.
T286 Burning Guilds in Amsterdam to rebuild in Breda.
T287 Oxford Rocketry.
T288 Order passes as WI.
T289 France flips to Order.
T292 Pocatello builds Hubble, so that is very bad news.
T293 Napoleon gives me the Move or DOW demand, pass.
T294 Pocatello captures Washington.
T295 Spy in Paris only has 30 turns, but spies in Karokorum and Rome are 100+, so I put them on defense.
T296 Adopt Spaceflight Pioneers.
T297 I am not sure what Liz is doing, but she has Breda jammed up; She is at war with Pocatello, so trying to get to Duckwater on ice is my guess. I am blocking her with my civilians, because I want Duckwater.
T298 GW born and a GA starts; move guild to Breda.
T299 3rd Battle ship is up, so I am going to go liberate Valetta.
T300 Napoleon wants to DOW Pocatello, I ask for the 10 turns.

Spoiler shows T361 screen shot and some description of what has been going on. Pocatello is no longer on the map.
Spoiler :
Science Victory turn! Orange blob on other continent is Washington and a new city for the costal connection. I have recalled Washington, and my veteran Tanks and Battleships are ringing his only city to keep Napoleon from eliminating him from the game.
civ5ss-edge147-polders_galore-t361''.jpg

T301 Use GE to bulb Pentagon in Breda; Napoleon enters Information Era.
T302 Pocatello kills off Washington; I take bribe from Liz for WC vote and to DOW Pocatello, both of which I would have done for free. I loose a couple Workers building Railroad to FoY.
T303 Neuschwanstein finishes; Sea Beggars stumble into Shoshone Carrier.
T304 Liz builds SoH; loose my GPr trying to swim across the ocean, I should have been watching him more closely.
T305 I loose my last Scout, again, sloppy.
T306 Adam dies; Pentagon finishes in Breda; Sea Beggars are still 300 gold per upgrade.
T307 Liz wants to DOW Napoleon, but that cannot work for me; burn GA to keep GA going.
T308 DOW Genghis; realize I forgot about Apollo Project, so start building that in Breda.
T309 GFW finishes in Amsterdam; Pocatello’s fleet shows up, so I borrow from Elizabeth to upgrade Sea Beggars; gpt is good now, since I have built banks everywhere.
T310 IG starts, I forgot to set up; burn my other two GA; sell my WL vote to Liz for 520 gold.
T311 I am upgrading Keshiks (4) once they have Logistics and March.
T312 IG looking pretty good.
T313 Liz builds CN Tower, which I thought she had already; Liz beats me in IG by 1400 hammers, but that okay as Pocatello just missed Won Medals; Robotics unlocked, burn GW to close out Rationalism for the next SS tech.
T317 Use GG to take Oil tile from Hukandeka.
T319 Liz builds Big Ben; CS shooting my Battleships with Guided Missiles, which is not something I think I have seen before.
T320 Apollo Program researched; Napoleon captures Monson Kahni but Pocatello takes it back, but I loose spy which was two turns from stealing a tech.
T321 Napoleon kills the GPr I was hoping re-capture; adopt Aristocracy (Tradition).
T322 Deal for Aluminum from Liz expires and neither she nor Napoleon have it to sell me, so that pauses SS production; I renew DOF w/ Liz so I can lump-sum trade for WC vote again.
T323 Capture and raze (new) Duckwater; liberate Philadelphia, recalling Washington; 1st Missile Cruiser online.
T324 Last Keshik has Logistics and March, so I upgrade him; gift Washington gold enough for RA; I don’t have a spare GAd, but three destroyers are deep in the red (from those CS Guided Missile hits, so I repair Fleet.
T326 Steal Advanced Ballistics; start building 1st SS part.
T327 Almost last (verteran) Infantry killed, which I save by sacrificing GG; burn SS Factory so I can use GE for SS Cockpit in Breda; GG dies instead.
T328 Pocatello makes a pretty generous offer, but I want to liberate more cities.
T329 Almost loose a Destroyer, so I need to be more careful.
T330 Capture and raze Te-Moak and Pohokwi, happy is still +20.
T331 Napoleon has added his 2nd SS part.
T332 Capture and puppet Washington; ISS starts, but I forgot the setup and do not fully commit; Catholicism passes as WR, unfortunately.
T333 Liberate Atlanta.
T334 I am loving my four Logistics/March tanks; I have lost Aluminum and cannot get all back that I need.
T335 Napoleon has triple my hammers for ISS; Washington asks for Gold and I agree; realize I need a port city to hook up Washington.
T336 Napoleon has captured New York, so that is a shame; liberate San Francisco; killing off Pocatello.
T337 Liz asks to DOW Napoleon but I decline because I gave into the Move-or-DOW demand.
T338 adopt Ogliarchy; Philadelphia surrounded by Tanks and Battleships.
T339 gpt decent again, so I pay 28 gpt for two lux to trigger WltKD; Te-Moak finishes burning down so I can resume Heritage and NIA.
T340 Liz builds SS Stasis Chamber, but that is only her second part for her. Recyling Centers online, so I resume building SS parts.
T341 Elizabeth builds SS Engine, but she only has three parts. Check on Napoleon and he has (!) SS parts. I was not paying attention! Settle Haarlem on coast between Monson Kahni and Philadelphia
T342 Napoleon DOWs Washington, but I have his one city safely surrounded.
T343 Liz builds Louvre, guess I should have looked for that being available!
T344 Fail to capture Valetta, but do not loose a Destroyer, so fine; denounce Napoleon.
T445 Liberate Valetta, killing off Genghis.
T346 Seven turns to Particle Physics
T347 Yikes, I miss-counted parts so I start SS Factory in Nijmegen. Utrech, The Hague, and Breda are still finishing off their parts. Without Hubble, I had Amsterdam building National Wonders and not any parts.
T348 Adopt Legalism.
T349 Double yikes, I built an Xcom in city without Armory!
T351 I am getting nervous, so I bribe Napoleon to DOW Elizabeth.
T354 missed it when Napoleon make peace w/ Washington.
T361 win by SV

EDGE#150: The Midsummer Quest

I don´t know, if you are up for another one. However, this game is meant to be played 50 turns at a time and then to report back on your undertakings, just as in #147. In this game we play as Poland on a Standard sized Continents map. The speed is Standard and QC and QM are activated as usual. I also chose Strategic balance for this game. Furthermore I picked Austria, France, the Ottomans, Russia and Sweden as AIs. I only rerolled a couple of times and took this rather ordinary looking start, but hey, we are Poland after all!

What you see is exactly what I know about this game, because I also wanted to be on the same line as the rest of you guys. I will post my first 50 turns on Friday the 25th. Enjoy!

EDGE#150: The Midsummer Quest
Sweet, I am in.

I have been wishing recently for a mediocre start so as to experiment with settling on a lux (or not).

This map is very close to what I had in mind, but I need for the Settler to start on a hill.

Anyway, thanks again for keeping curating these maps.

Warrior S to forest hill. If nothing of note, then settle T0 on the flat plains river next to the gold hill.

Yes, I don’t think I have changed plans twice, all on the first turn!
  1. Plan A: T0 settle the flat plains river next to the gold hill. But first, move Warrior.
  2. Interesting. Nope, Plan B. Move Settler across river for Plan B, which will be a T2 settle, but that is okay.
  3. Even more interesting! My start needs to give up something. Plan B will leave a bonus tile in the fourth ring. I hate that. Next Turn.
  4. Plan C: T1 settle, giving up the river, but keeping the resource in the third ring. As luck has it, settling reveals another third-ring bonus tile.

I'll move the warrior to the forested hill too to see if I'll miss anything good by settling on the Gold. I'll most likely settle on the Gold regardless, unless there's something fantastic like a NW to the southwest.

After that poor Netherlands game (#147) I'd certainly like another shot at making a better game. I've never had a bad one with Poland, this will feel like Immortal by comparison, I bet.

As promised, here comes my report from #150, turns 0-50:

Spoiler :

t0 Warrior to the forested hill and Settler up on the Gold.
t1 Warrior continues W and the Settler dashes for the coastal river hill further to the E.
t2 Settled Warsaw. Got a pop ruin and my Warrior found FoY! Start Pottery&Scout.
t3 Oh, CS border, so Kathmandu will have FoY.
t4 Meet Kathmandu.
t6 Scout ready. Start on Monument.
t8 Meet Portugal.
t9 Find two ruins but Maria will get one of them.
t10 Pottery done. Archery from ruin, start on Mining.
t12 Approaching Porto. Can I steal a Worker? Monument done and Shrine next.
t14 No, I couldn´t get one Worker from Portugal. Instead I stole two!
t15 Meet Russia.
t17 Open Tradition. Shrine is done. I will put 3 turns into a Granary and switch to Settler at pop 3.
t18 Mining done. Start on AH.
t20 Finally we are at pop 3. I switch to Settler production.
t22 Open Piety.
t24 AH done. Start Masonry.
t29 Settler done. I need an Archer next to clear a barb camp on the very tile I want one expand.
t32 Take Organized religion.
t33 Settle Krakow and they start on a Shrine. Fourth pantheon: Earth Mother. Archer done and the cap start on a Settler.
t35 Clear the "misplaced" barb camp.
t36 Clear the barb camp near Krakow and meet Riga.
t40 Shrine is done in Krakow and they start on a Monument.
t41 Krakow is pop 2.
t42 Settler is done. Warsaw continue their Granary.
t43 Writing done, start BW. I plunder a portuguese TR.
t45 Founded Lodz (remember to pronounce it "Woodsh"!) and they start on a Shrine.
t46 Granary done in cap. Start on a Caravan.
t47 Warsaw is finally pop 4. Somebody founded first religion.
t48 I plunder a second TR. Selling Salt to Russia.
t50 I am on 8 techs and the AIs are all on 13 or 14 techs. BW done, Wheel next. Monument in Krakow is ready and they start on a Granary.

The start feels slow. I will make peace with Maria soon to send my Caravan to Porto. Next plans are 1) going for NC and 2) going for Kathmandu. The CS is as bad as a city can be, but it has an unique luxury and FoY. I want that!

I was waiting for Nizef to start the first round of reports for #150 to post my first 50 turns:

Spoiler :

002- Settling. I would have settled the Gold but I like coast and I moved on the coastal hill. I sent the warrior to the South. Found FOY on T2. Open Archery.
003- My warrior becomes a spearman which is really awesome with Poland. I'll try to grow him to a heavily promoted Winged Hussar.
004- 8 faith from Kathmandu. pledge to protect.
008- Met Portugal. useless map ruin.
010- Pop ruin after pop increase. I have exactly 50 gold and I buy a salt tile.
011- Met Russia. Start work on ToA. Spearman is heading to try to snipe a Worker from Portugal.
012- Spearman captures first worker from Portugal.
017- Spearman captures second worker from Portugal. Scout sees a caravan to hunt and pillage.
019- mining finishes and i start pottery. Maybe I could buy a shrine somehow if I get the gold.
023- I plunder the caravan for 100 gold.
025- Spearman captures third worker from Portugal. I sell my Salt to Portugal and make peace. Buy Shrine. Russia already has a pantheon.
027- I DOW Russia. Tradition Opener. I have a russian scout in my area and I want to train my units.
030- ToA finishes and I start my first settler and research The Wheel.
031- 2nd pantheon goes and I need 6 more turns now for mine.
034- Liberty Opener.
037- I get my favourite pantheon, Fertility Rites!
040- I settle my second city in a suboptimal place instead of making peace with Russia.
041- Kathmandu finally targeted a barb camp.
044- Liberty-Republic.
048- Unmet player loser capital and is also out of the game! Suleiman is in the game, Russia met them.
049- Portugal DOFs me. Maria doesn't care about 3 workers and my forward settling.
050- Spearman now has Shock 3 and is ready for serious combat. 33 XP until Great General.

It is interesting to me that @Nizef and @Tiberiu picked the same spot — because that spot is just awful!

Sure, river coastal hill. But too much useless Ocean, and can get hit by three melee ships per turn! And I happily recognize that @Nizef and @Tiberiu, so I please bear with me while I work through my cognitive dissonance…

Also, this map has me taking Workers from a CS. And I am trying Liberty. It is so nice to be tempted from my comfort zone!

Spoiler for full size screen shot and 50 lines of turn descriptions.
Spoiler :
Is CS with FoY of any particular utility to the CS ally? I am thinking not. FoY in player’s borders is +10 Happy. Yes, I could steal FoY with a GG. And Kathmandu is not in a great location. But still, I think this map calls for going off-script, and conquering a CS early. Also, that early war will help train up units for clearing the continent.

Early cap BO: Scout, Monument, Shrine, Worker, Archer, Archer, Settler, Archer, Pyramids, Granary, Library, Caravan, Workboat, Caravan, Lighthouse, Ducal Stable, NC.
Tech: Pottery, Mining, AH, Archery, Writing; Masonry, Iron Working, Sailing, Optics, Trapping, Horseback Riding, Calendar, Philosophy, Mathematics, Currency, Civil Service.
civ5ss-edge150-t050.jpeg

T000 Warrior S to forest hill. Reveals Salt and Coast. I really prefer a coastal start, so Settler crosses the river.
T001 Quite the dilemma! Coastal start gives up river or wheat. Also, I don’t like giving up on a chop, so I settle the flat grassland next to the Salt. Planting reveals a couple Fish, so I am quite content with my choice.
T002 Warrior heading NW finds Marble and more Salt. YASS, and @Nizef thought the map was weak!
T004 Ruins upgrades Warrior, nice! Normally I have nothing but contempt for a Spearman, but with Lancer UU it is fine.
T005 meet Maria
T006 I was thinking of playing peaceful, but maybe not. I am not impressed with the location of Porto, and would like to replace it with one of my own cities, just S one or two tiles.
T008 discover FoY !!!
T009 Ruins gives a map. Kathmandu has FoY, too bad for them.
T010 Kathmandu borders grow to FoY. That is it. I might have spared them if I could catch FoY with my first Settler.
T012 Ruins claims to show barbarian camps, but I already know of the two it “reveals”.
T018 open Liberty
T022 Warrior and Scout just only barely survive barb camp encounter.
T023 pantheon, Earth Mother
T025 adopt Republic
T027 Kathmandu pops a Worker, and I am right there, and I plan to kill them sooner than later, and they have not generated a quest, so I take the worker.
T029 GLib goes
T036 meet Catherine
T039 Stonehenge goes
T040 adopt Collective Rule
T041 Writing unlocked; SoZ goes
T042 complete barb camp and return Riga worker, so ally status
T043 settle Kraków between Riga and Warsaw, just missing river and coast, so is also in compromised position
T044 get find-Russia-quest (from Embassy) with Riga, so now I am at 132 influence with them
T047 Maria wants to DOW Catherine, I agree
T050 Temple of Artemis goes

I don't know, that spot looks pretty good to me, kind of wish I'd have seen it. But I went south after seeing the crab. Our spot is good too. Both get 3 luxes and two wheats. I don't think in single player game 3 ocean tiles adjacent is a worry, unless Carthage is in the game.

Spoiler :
T0. Move warrior to hill, settler to Gold, woah, coast and Salt. Maybe I won't settle the Gold.

T1. Move settler one tile SE, see crab, yep the coast it is next to the Salt for a 3-lux capital.

T3. Fountain of Youth! Darn, next to a CS. Can I get a settler there fast enough?

T11. Met Maria I, she stole my ruin. Buy Gold hill.

T12. Well buying that Gold hill was a waste of money, it doesn't get a settler out any faster than a grassland tile. Oh well, will wait for a settler start Monument.

T14. Steal Maria's worker.

T17. First pantheon goes, Oral Tradition.

T20. Welp, Kathmandu already has FoY. That's ok, I got Earth Mother pantheon.

T23. Make peace with Maria.

T24. Ha, barb took Maria's settler and then died, thanks for the free worker.

T30. GLighthouse goes, meet Russia.

T38. First religion founded.

T42. Writing discovered, start Bronze Working. Found city of Krakow way too close to Porto. First to find Byblos.

T45. Darn, I can't get around Portuguese territory.

T50. Buy Salt in Porto's third ring, Maria is not going to be happy.

BO: Scout, Scout, Monument, Shrine, Settler
Techs: Pottery, Mining, AH, Archery, Writing, BW
Maria took Liberty. Catherine Tradition and Aesthetics.

I see two more good city spots. I should be ok as long as Maria doesn't attack Krakow too early.

Spoiler T50 Map :
T50.jpg

I'm in, here are my first 50 turns.
T0 move warrior south, see empty coast and move to the gold.
I settle on the gold and keep scouting, only to find a few turns later that there was actually a decent coastal spot for an expand if I put my cap anywhere else.
I find fountain on turn 4, meet Jerusalem on turn 5, and start a settler in my cap after the first scout to try to get fountain to settle. Probably not the best play but man I wanted that.

Jerusalem takes fountain on turn 10 or so and I go, welp that spot is still awesome, let's go settle there anyway. In the meantime, I go kill Portugal's caravan for 100 gold and steal a worker from Jerusalem for my expand around turn 20. Expand went shrine granary to get me earth mother along with a shrine in my cap.

I DOF Portugal about 15 turns after peace, building settler #4 after the build order scout- settler shrine settler

It is interesting to me that @Nizef and @Tiberiu picked the same spot — because that spot is just awful!

It will be fun to compare the differences that occur during the game. About your observation, the way I see it is that:
Spoiler :

-first, both places have a lot of ocean but this point is rather moot since it will take a lot of time until this becomes a thing, if ever. i.e we have enough good tiles both places.
-in SP and with Poland the war vulnerability is not really that relevant but I would see your point in a MP perspective.
so this mostly boils down to this:
-our position has: access to Hydrocentral with 8 prod + Water Mill + assured garden + free bonus 1 production for a long time.
-your position has: access to Windmill.
This seems quite simple to decide unless I am missing something! :p

First 50 turns of #150

Spoiler :

Turn 2: Founded Warsaw on the forest-river-coastal tile. Pop ruin. Fountain of Youth! Looks like it's next to a city-state though. Started Scout, Pottery. Stagnating, working Salt and grassland hill.
Turn 4: Met Kathmandu for 8 faith. Strong start so far. I suppose I'll need to citadel-steal FoY from Kathmandu at some point. Honor maybe?
Turn 6: Finished Scout, started another Scout.
Turn 10: Finished Pottery, started Mining. Finished Scout, started Shrine. Met Portugal.
Turn 11: Kathmandu gets the FoY tile. Map ruin.
Turn 13: Met Russia.
Turn 14: DoWed Portugal, plundered caravan.
Turn 15: Captured Portuguese worker. Finished Shrine, started Monument.
Turn 16: I get first pantheon and pick Earth Mother.
Turn 17: Borders finally grow to the fish tile and I can grow my city.
Turn 18: Mining finished, started Bronze Working.
Turn 21: Stole another Portuguese worker.
Turn 22: Finished Monument, started Warrior.
Turn 23: Opened Honor. Russia gets second pantheon - Goddess of Protection.
Turn 28: New SP: Warrior Code.
Turn 29: Warsaw grows to pop 3.
Turn 30: Finished Warrior, started Settler. BW finished, started AH.
Turn 36: Finished AH, started Archery.
Turn 37: Finished Settler, started Caravan
Turn 41: Founded Krakow, started Monument. DoF with Russia.
Turn 42: Can't see the stupid Russian city because it's surrounded by jungle. I desperately need a destination city for my caravan. Started The Wheel, Granary in Warsaw.
Turn 44: Have to go all the way around the Russian city...
Turn 46: Cleared a camp for Riga, returned them a worker, up to 129 influence.
Turn 47: Finally I can send a trade route to Russia.
Turn 48: Finished Granary, started Archer
Turn 50: Wheel finished, started Masonry

20210626073934_1.jpg 20210626073938_1.jpg

I'll be pretty slow to Construction, so I should've probably gone with a 3-city opener here. Otherwise things look OK; plan is to upgrade to CBs and kill Portugal, quick 2-city NC, then expand. Farming XP on a Portuguese scout.

Same self-imposed rules as last time, no bribes and no peace deal abuse, everything else is fine.

I don't know, that spot looks pretty good to me, kind of wish I'd have seen it.
Yes, the point is moot since I did not see the spot. But if I had, I would have picked the flat tile 1 hex NW. Still on the river, a bit more land (and a bit less ocean), and can only be hit by one melee ship per turn.

All that said, I have no regrets regarding where you and I put Warsaw.

My report from #150, turns 51-100:

Spoiler :

t51 I steal a 3rd Worker from Portugal and make peace after that. Krakow is pop 3.
t52 I pick Oligarchy. Warsaw is pop 5 and the Caravan is ready.
t53 Lodz grew (sloppy play, now I am unhappy). Caravan goes from Krakow to Porto for 3 gold and 4 beakers per turn.
t54 Shrine done in Lodz, starting on a LIbrary.
t55 Russia gets 2nd religion. Only 2 religions and 2 pantheons so far. Calendar next.
t57 Worker done in Warsaw and they start on a LIbrary.
t58 3rd religion went. Pagodas are still available though, looking good.
t59 Construction next.
t60 I get the 4th religion with Tithe/Pagodas.
t61 Granary done in Krakow, they start on a Library.
t62 Warsaw: Library done, start on Watermill.
t64 Krakow pop 4.
t65 I pick Legalism when I enter the Classical era. Lodz: Library done, start on a Granary. Upgraded my Archer to CB. Philosophy next.
