I'm noticing in lots of posts that people say "paper maker gives 3G" or "pays for colloseum and itself". That's not true.

A papermakes gives 4:commerce: and costs 1:commerce: upkeep. That's not 3:commerce:!

Add a marketplace and a bank and the papermaker produces 6:commerce:.
Add a stock exchange and it will produce 7.3:commerce:
Add Socialism and the papermaker costs 0.9:commerce: upkeep.
That's 5:commerce: profit throughout most of the game or 6.4:commerce: in a really developed city.

Add in the fact that you were already going to put libraries in every city anyways, and it's relatively 4 outright without bonuses.

Haha 6.4 gold per cities is good, but its come late, and compare to Iroqouis UB, you see the differences :). Long House +1 Prod for each Worked Forrest Title, and if there is heavy forrest, you gain average 10 forrest ==> 10 raw prod, and with all combo of factory, windmill, solar plant, workshop, ... you gain ~20 prod per turn, and exchange to gold = 20 gold per turn ^^.

Problem with the Iroquois longhouse is that there is no guarantee that you get heavy forest tiles. I agree that it can amazing in some cities but paper maker is great in every city you build it in. It comes early and is a building you were going to build anyway (library) so the extra gold is purely a bonus. In short paper makes is the best building in the game.

Every single game I've played as Iroquois have put me in places with no forests or jungles. Period. I've had more lakes with the Aztecs than I have with the Iroquois.

Oddly, in my current game as Japan, half the continent is covered with forests, and it's a Large Pangaea map. Iroquois are also not present in my game.

Iroquois will always be placed in forest area.
Aztec will always be placed in jungle area
Russia will always be placed in tundra area
Egypt will always be placed in desert area

Back to the topic - the Paper Maker's crazy. You can get enough gold to raise a allied city state from it in early game.

not always, you can change settings to have random start locations.

agreed that paper maker is just ridiculous. have to give wu strong consideration for best civ with PM, GG, and chonoku. all three of those are better than many civ's absolute best trait. alex is the only one who comes close, just b/c he is so powerful in the early game.

Ha, it doesn't come late if you aim straight for it at the beginning. So far, I've found China to be the most versatile civ in the game because a tech/gold advantage like this can be used to play toward almost any kind of victory. (Persia being second most versatile, but I haven't played them all yet.)
