I just got the Civilization IV game yesterday played it once and then today decided to check for updates. After downloading the update and then installing it, I ended up with the following message:

Error 1703. No valid source could be found for product Sid Meier's Civilization 4. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

Disk 1 is in the CDRom/DVD drive used to install the program yesterday and it like it when I started up the game today, but won't finish the install.

What do I do now??

I am downloading patch 1.61 now it now. It is a bit slow.

When I tried to execute the Patch 1.61 it told me that the Patch 1.74 was already installed and I needed to uninstall it first. How does one uninstall this update. I went to Add remove programs but it only shows the SID Civ IV program with not updates even though "Show Updates" is checked.

It seems to be working despite the errors on the initial update to 1.74

I to have run into this problem and have removed/reinstalled the game 4 times sofare in the last few weeks. It has also just shut down in the middle of a game. I to would like to know how to fix this before the game disk becomes a frisbee.

It is Civ4 stand alone, but I do have Warlords. The first time I ran it with Warlords it crashed twice, no message, then it would not even start.

Removed/reinstalled it and things were ok, then I intalled the latest patch 1.74, and would not run.

I then just installed it and ran it as it was, and it would crash, no message, just stop going back to the desktop like it had not been running.

I am be ginning to get very frustrated.

ok, remove both games completey as below - then install the 1.61 and 2.08 patches first. Then test if it works, then install 1.74 and 2.13 (you can get all patches from the download database here. This applies to cd version of the game - if this is a downloaded one, tell me :)

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Then install 1.74 and 2.13

Well everything seems to be working now, tho my warlords disc is not read when i use it, so I will stick with the regular version for now and learn it an load it later. Thanks for the help.:D:goodjob:

I've got the same problem. I bought Civ IV {v1.61} a week ago and I've played several games successfully. When I tried to update to v1.74, I got that same error. The Game won't play. The game won't install, uninstall {error} or play {No valid source...}.

OK, following the advice above {Ori #12}, I downloaded and setup the latest DX from evil microsoft and now the game works on v1.74. Thanks Ori! Is that Ori from the Hobbit? The Elder Eddas? Well, thanks anyway.
