From Steam Spy, these are only estimates not hard numbers.

There was a pretty big discount offer on Civ V halfway through last year. Compare new owners Civ V vs Civ VI then look at revenue for each. People are pleased to pick up a bargain, I know I did last year with all the bundled DLCs.
Interesting seeing No Man's Game Sky still netted 43 million, that had pretty significant problems on release.

I think that's due to most people playing too long to get a refund. I'm one of them, and was never aware of Steam offering refunds no matter what as a special case for it, so I'm stuck with the game.

The list also includes games also available on consoles as well, primarily the Xbox One and to some extent, the PS4.

It's interesting that Planet Coaster isn't even on the list.

Thanks for numbers. Although as fan, I don't care so much about its mass-market financial success --my favorite games. music, movies, and even shows rarely featured on such lists-- but I hope that with backing of those numbers the devs will be able to continue to improve\expand civ6.

The list is primarily dominated by FPSes, WRPGs, and wide open sandboxes, but it's always good to see strategy games on the list.

Many of my favourite game genres (platform, action-adventure, JRPGs, MMOs, MOBAs, strategy, and construction/space management simulation games) are generally not represented on such lists.

Well...

1. JRPGs, especially Final Fantasy, sell very well. But, these games usually aren't on Steam until well after release.
2. MMOs and MOBAs make most of their money from monthly subscriptions or "micro" transactions, rather than direct sales.
3. I count at least six strategy and sim games on the revenue list of 25. That's pretty good, really.

Civ5 did that well. Wow.

Didn't realize Stellaris was that much of a success. I think that may be the game I try next

Also keep in mind that many of these games had been out longer than civvi. So it out sold a lot of games this year in a much shorter timeframe.

CivV well... for a game we'll past the last patch, it's still doing better than some newer games.

To compare this with steams own 'gross revenue' list, civV was in the top 30 there. Civvi was in top 10.

Don't forget that Civ is Steam Exclusive though, which many other games are not. A ton of them aren't even PC-exclusive.

Seeing how much $ the reeked in profit, I get very upset about their customer care. Zero communication and 2 lackluster patches.

I get far better communication for my android game I play and paid a fraction of what I shelled out for Civ 6.

Civ VI is also available in the Mac App Store (and is also the only legal non-Steam version available for Civ VI).

However, sales from the Mac App Store are a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.

Man, the Stardew valley guy must be doing pretty well for himself these days. 23 million split among...himself (and probably some steam fees and such).

Be VERY careful. It got a lot of buyers from before the launch. The game is not in any way good past the expansion phase, although expansion is very well done. After that, it's quite dull.

After 25 years in the charts, Simcity has gone...
Cities: Skylines took over simcity. It only shows up in the number of players chart, not amount of money, though.

I thought I would look at the Mac App Store to see what the figures are there. Because of the way the App Store works, I can only look at my local one (UK). I looked at the highest grossing *apps* (not just games) and number 4 on the list is The Sims Super Collection. The highest three apps are music, movie or photography related. There are several games in the top 30, including Total War and Call of Duty. Interestingly, the highest grossing Civ title (coming in at number 42) is Civ 4! Since it only costs £15 one can only assume it is selling in quite significant numbers to make it into a "highest grossing" list. Beyond Earth is at number 44. Civ 6 comes next, at number 103, while Civ 5 is at 139. Make of that what you will. It would be interesting to know what regional variations there might be.

Anyway, I suspect there are rather more than 30 people playing Civ on Mac :)

Edit: interesting -- I just looked at this list https://itopchart.com/us/en/top-grossing-mac-apps/ for the App Store USA, and it is very different. No idea what period of time it refers to, but it puts Civ 6 in the top ten, though with Civ 5 not far behind. Make of THAT what you will :)

You never go wrong with paradox. Paradox supports their games for a long time. There are going to be like 4 more expansions for eu4. And that game has been out for quite a while. Hoi4 is beginning to be great as well do might be more for a niche group of gamers.
