[NFP] Ethiopia Conjecture

I mentioned this on another thread but I think a monument replacement isn't needed. We already have unique graphics for monuments anyway.
I'm expecting something related to the Holy Site.

A defensive focus is standard as they are the only African nation to never be ruled by a European power. This may be a political defense. Religion is also a popular focus with their famous rock hewn churches and steles, and would be a must of Hallie Selassie were to return an extremely devoted Christian who later became the Messiah for Rastafarians (much to his chagrin).

I'm almost positive we will get either a religious or culture focused Ethiopia. Especially if they with an earlier focus ala Axumite period. There was very significant cultural developments during this period with pottery, construction among other things. The "defensive" focus is purely modern and overemphasizing it (as has been done virtually everywhere) is heavily Eurocentric for a number of reasons (I'll elaborate if I have too but I don't think its needed here).

My guess is the rock-hewn church will be either a shrine or temple replacement. UU is anybodies guess. I'm a specialist in West Africa so I only have peripheral knowledge of East Africa and Ethiopia.

A religious Civ ability is definitely a likelihood, but I’d like to see Menelik II and his modern reforms featured (although admittedly that would likely also reference the Battle of Adwa...)
Look at germany. That civ design covers many periods of history. They could easily do the same with ethiopia.

I suspect a culture civ. Maya - science and GC - military. I don't think they'd do culture turtle as on the nose as maya is science turtle, but that doesn't mean a UU cant have a defensive slant or something.

In Civ V, they had a monument so strong that they became the best culture victory civ by accident. They are also good in defences, both against military/domination as well as culture.

They had benefits fighting civs with less cities and close to their capital. Hmmm....sounds like they could be pushing tall civs now, which I'm all for. Hopefully we see similar bonuses.

If their monuments are equally as strong as in Civ V, they will be amazing contenders for both religious victory AND cultural. If they also have good defences against conquering civs, they could be a true force to be reckoned with.

2) With a new district rolling out in the same update, it seems likely to me that Ethiopia would have a unique version of that district.
Either that or a unique building in that new district type, I think seems likely.

It would appear that the new district only holds, at most, 2 buildings.

Hoping they focus on Axumite Ethiopia and they focus on culture. :)

They'd be a lot of fun.

I could see them competing with the Khmer for religious tourism especially with a Rock-Hewn Church infrastructure and relics.

As I said in the other thread, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are too magnificent to be a Shrine or Temple replacement. They need to either be a Unique Improvement, a Unique District, or a World Wonder. I'm also hoping for a Medieval/Renaissance leader, with Zar'a Ya'qob being far and away my top pick. If it must be a more modern leader, I'd prefer Menelik II to Haile Selassie again.

My idea copied from the thread “Design your own civilization”:

Since we know it's coming in July...

Ethiopian Empire
Leader: Haile Selassie
306px-Haile_Selassie_in_full_dress.jpg

Leader Ability: Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah
  • Gains Great Prophet points (equal to Era Score) for every Historical Moment*
  • After earning a Great Prophet, earns Faith equal to Era Score multiplied by the current Age (x1 in Ancient, x2 in Classic, etc.)**
Civilization Ability: Ark of the Covenant
  • Doubles all yields from Relics
  • Relics may be stored in any Great Work slot
  • Relics theme with all other Great Works
Unique Unit: Chewa regiment
  • Costs the same as the Pikeman, which it replaces
  • Equal in Strength to the Pike & Shot
  • Whenever a Chewa regiment captures a Barbarian camp or Tribal Village, it gains a Relic
Unique District: Tewahedo Church
  • Replaces the Holy Site at half the production cost
  • Does not count against district limit
  • +2 Faith from adjacent Natural and World Wonders
  • +1 Faith from adjacent Desert and Jungle
  • Any building constructed in a Tewahedo Church gains a relic slot
Leader Agenda: Rastafari messiah
Likes civilization with lots of faith but who have not founded a competing religion. Dislikes civilizations with low levels of faith.

*Sans Rise & Fall, this generate equivalent points to what the allotted Era Score would have been
**Sans Rise & Fall, this is based on the player's Era instead of the global Age
