[NFP] Ethiopia Update Discussion Thread

Does the Teddy split upset anyone else?
I mean, I preordered the pass because I'm rarely disappointed with what Firaxis does, but like... I like Teddy as he is? I thought these persona packs were just going to be visual and slight behavioral changes. Now I kind of don't want them.
The way they worded "Rough Rider" Teddy it makes sense to give him the UU and combat bonuses and focus President Teddy now on National Parks and environmentalism.

i thought they do mention culture, but perhaps i’m mistaken

No, I guess you're right. They mention Faith from trade routes and then show them using Faith to purchase a museum while saying, "and gives you new things to do with that Faith to claim a Culture victory." So, Faith + Culture. Which is kind of already how CV works... Eh.

So I was able to watch the video and have to say looking forward to this one. Kind of wished there was an option were you can pick and choose what society you want in the game. Not a fan of vampires tbh but everything looks nice including the diplo quarter

I’m not too upset, but it is a weird choice. Instead of a separate new ability like with Catherine, it really seems like the exclusive Rough Rider Teddy is a slightly buffed version of what we currently have, and the tweaked base-game Teddy will have a completely new ability around National Parks...

I thought something like this would happen ever since they announced Rough Rider Teddy, but it’s a weird way to sell a leader revamp.

It would be neat if Secret Societies have Diplomatic modifiers, so members of the same society like each other and hate members of other societies, making them like ideologies.

god can ppl stop whining? They said they wanted to go fantasy with this pack and that’s what they chose to do. If you don’t like it, don’t play it. ITS NOT LIKE THE FANTASY AFFECTS THE BASE GAME. It’s not like they want civ to be a fantasy game.

When CK2 has devil worshippers and horse and bear people by default on, be glad that civ at least takes the base game seriously.

No, I want to like it and play it. Because I payed for it in advance not knowing what did I pay for. Do not whine because of whiners. Try to understand their powerful logic instead.

Sorry, could've been clearer. They said something along the lines of Rough Riders only being available to Rough Rider teddy, which would suggest they're changing baseline version. I wonder how that change will work.

Ahh!

I think the "Regular" Teddy will be now focused on Appeal and Conversation/Enviromentalism, while "Rough" Teddy will be focused on the ability we saw.

It seems like it's designed kind of like the Khmer. Use your Religious game to boost your Culture game.

i think you can pick the secret society...i think the implication is they might invite you at random, so you can hold out for the one you want. But let’s wait and see if that’s true

You get a tiny tiny glimpse of Ethiopia's leader portrait in the various in-progress game scenes.
He seems to be wearing some kind of hat.

This update looks quite interesting, but I'll reserve judgement about things like vampires until we get to play around with them a bit.

It’s Menelik II. He wears a hat and has a beard like irl, it also says his name in the bottom left corner

usually someone who has to call their own logic powerful isn’t exactly convincing through their logic’s own merit

After the soothsayer and aliens and zombies of the last update I was really hoping for something a tad more grounded in history, so I was very pleased with the first few updates in the video. Even the first two secret societies seemed pretty believable and the old gods faction was passable (I do enjoy a bit of lovecraftian lore every now and then :)). Theennnn... they got to the vampires and now I’m afraid they lost me.
Yeah I get that "if you don't like it, don't play it" but the first 3 secret societies were kind of sort of realistic and I definitely would play with those a lot. But the Vampire thing... really takes me out of it. I don't see how that's even a secret society. If they wanted to do a monsters mode and add in Vampires and werewolves and swamp things that'd be an interesting toggle but I don't get why one of those randomly infiltrated secret societies which are a real thing

New Catherine Magnificence is so beautiful :D

And I'll enjoy Rough Rider Teddy's new ability aswell. Wonder if the old leaders get a tweak?

(I'll probably not play with secret societies).

Surprised no one has mentioned that Teddy was not president while he was a rough rider.
Then again, this is Civ.
that’s why there’s aslo his bull moose form, which was him as president

Well, OK, but that's how every civilization already works. Faith is already the fastest way to win via Culture because Faith gets you Great People, National Parks, and Rock Bands.

But, as I said, the video clearly shows a city benefiting from two follower beliefs, so perhaps Ethiopia gets the old Theodora bonus or something.

  • Secret Societies. I’m okay with Secret Societies. Looking forward to a mod that gives them more historical or literary names. Also interested to see how they actually work. Do you pick the Society, or is it random? Can multiple people have the same Society, and does it matter if you do? Seems like a mode I might use more than Apocalypse Mode. Also seems like something Mods could have fun with. Love that this stuff is optional.
  • Governors. Interesting they use the Governor Mechanic. Very sorry your Society doesn’t actually give you a Governor you can move around. The new Mechanic really shows how much the Governor Mechanic is basically Civ V Social Policies at its core. It’ll be interesting to see if they take a similar approach with other Game Modes or new mechanics, letting you unlock empire wide abilities reflecting eg Ideologies.

  • Diplomatic Quarter. Very much a natural progression for the game to have more “one district per empire purple districts”. That alone seems like a good addition. I’m guessing the other new district will work the same way. I’ll have to see how the DQ and Buildings actually plays out. So far, it doesn’t actually seem like a big change to Spy or Envoy Mechanics, but guess we’ll see. I like that it makes Embassies more valuable. Pity it doesn’t leverage your Embassies in other Civs, although those give you visibility so maybe no need to buff them.

  • City States. Did they say City State bonuses will be tied to Diplomatic Quarter rather than District Buildings? That would be an awesome change. That would be worth the sticker price by itself.
  • Yields. Jesus. More and more yields. They are really going to need to look at the overall economy after all this stuff is added and everything is tweaked to maximum.

  • Spies. It’ll be a bit sad if Spies and Spy Missions haven’t also had a bit of a tweak. I was also really hoping for the option to send Spies as Ambassadors. Not a big thing in the scheme of things, but would make Spies a bit more interesting.
  • Buildings. Also a bit sad if they don’t take the opportunity to tweak Buildings more generally. Those flat yields really don’t work.
