Ethiopians?

The had the largest African Empire ever, didn't they? I'm a typical ignorant North American, knowing mostly Western History :(

Excluding colonial empires, Romans and the Caliphate (because they were foreign powers), that honor probably belongs to the Carthaginians, Fatimids, Almoravids or the Mahdi in the 19th century. The Carthaginians and Almovarids ruled over much of Spain, too. My money's on the Fatimids, who briefly ruled everything from Morocco to Egypt. I wouldn't include them in the game, though, since their peak was fairly short. Ethiopia/Abyssinia has a long history which dates to before 1000 BC. They're an excellent choice for the game.

Besides, they discovered coffee (and several other crops), which has to count for something.

ethiopia won the first italian invasion in the 1880s i think it was, or 90s.
but when italy invaded in the 1930s ethiopia stood no chance.
the ethiopian army changed lil since the 1890s, while italy used tanks, machinguns and bombers, even chemical weapions aginst them

Sorry if in already state but it is

"The only african nation that was never colonize"

not

"The only african nation that was never conquered"

So we can drop the discussion about the 1936 italian invation.

If 3000 years of history is not enough, the construction like this certain also helps: http://www.selamta.net/lalibela.htm

So there is no question that they are a got choice for a new civ.

apparently a persian cleric in the third century a.d reckons that it was the third most important state in the world after persia and rome.

i think its a good choice dont see why not.

That was very inappropriate. Although you were clearly trying to make a joke, the only thing that people are laughing at now is your ignorance. Show some respect for a Civilization that has lasted thousands of years and has way more history and culture to it than the images you see on TV.

Next time, think before you speak...

Quite so. Does the other poster (I had him on my ignore list already,) laugh at the Russians? The famines in the USSR in the 1930s was caused by Stalin for political ends -- just as the famine in Ethiopia in the 1980s was caused by the Marxist junta that ruled the country at that time.

I am glad Ethiopia is in the game -- they were far more deserving of inclusion than the Zulus or Mali, IMHO.

Civ is OK, but I do not like the leader at all !!! He looks like a usual modern guy, and I want some look that resembles the old times !

Mali is also very deserving of being included. Zulu... as a civ it wasn't acceptable, but since the expansion was "Warlords", that makes it marginally acceptable. The Civs are alright choices except HRE / Byzantines, but it's the leader choices that I have issues with. But Ethopia as a Civ, definitely.

I think the fact that he looks modern is mainly just a reflection of the fact that many modern African Americans have taken to wearing traditional African clothing. I think he looks pretty appropriate.

For a while they were partly-colonized by the Italians (only Eritrea), but basically Italy ran a mutually cooperative trading port that Italy eventually got a swelled head about and went imperialistic. Ethiopia did kick their butt though.

Later on, prior to WW2, the Italians did conquer for a few years, but were kicked out, partly by the help of the British. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_African_Campaign_%28World_War_II)

I think that Italy won, but never occupied. I do know that Ethiopians at least claim that. Then again, Chinese claim that America faked the Moon landing, Osama bin Laden lives in New York, and Jack Daniels is made in China. :\

Good question. I don't believe any country has never been conquered/colonized..

The Andamans. Unless you count them as a "colony" of India, but that would be quite a stretch, because while they nominally belong to India, they don't allow Indians (or anyone else) to set foot on their islands. Of course, they don't really constitute a "country" either.

Always the slight touch of racism when talking about African civs...

The Brits conquered Tewodros II in 1868, with help from various local factions (Tewodros having upset just about everyone) but withdrew once they had secured the release of the western hostages. The Brits had every opportunity, excuse and the necessary local allies to colonise the region (or install a puppet regime) if they had had the will to do so. This was eight years after the second opium war when the Brits were actively trying to curtail the expansion of the Empire proper.

Clearly deserve to be in though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1868_Expedition_to_Abyssinia Not that wiki has much to say on the topic.

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kenanderson/histemp/abyssinia1.html A more detailed, if somewhat tub-thumping, write-up of the war.

Also, the argument that Egypt is not "black" African as someone else mentioned is disputed. The idea that Egypt wasn't "black" derives from the eugenics race "sciences" of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although many academics rejected racial eugenics after the Nazi experiment, unfortunately remnants of the race sciences continue to linger. The attempt to separate Egypt from "black" Africa is a myth that I see often repeated in these forums and it drives me crazy. The race sciences argued that Egypt's culture was a result of its interaction with the European and Asian civilizations, as a way to discredit "black" African civilization.

The Middle East has always been a crossroads of people. And Egypt was certainly ruled at times by "black" people from the South and "white" people from Greece, but what evidence is there that the average person in ancient Egypt looked much different from the average person in modern Egypt?

I support Ethiopia to be fit enough to make it into this game.

supported by the post of 'Bakuel' and the historical note and Ethiopian achievements. :)

Sorry, I'm not trying to argue that ancient Egyptians looked any different than contemporary Egyptians, I was just on a rant because I am tired of hearing people inaccurately claim Egypt is not actually related to "black" Africa; as if it is part of another continent that had no relations with the rest of the African continent. I agree with what you said too. ;)

haha ive missed a lot of posts in this.. but since all humans evolved from central afrika, how can anyone say Egyptians didnt come from there? haha
