European Middle Ages Mod Resurrection

You thought no one would notice the Foot fetish links playing as the Vikings in the year 1100! Haha very funny, your lucky i like feet.

Head Serf:

Come to think of it, I'll just do up the XML text files for the Galley defensive bonuses, and post them to you when I finish... you can simply cut and paste them. Should be a couple of days. I'll just look at the cog to see how you did it. Also, I'll have to add dromon and drakkar to those units that sailing ships get def bonuses against, and give the bonus to the Nau as well.

Question, can unit classes get movement bonuses in certain terrain? I'd like to give sailing ships double movement in ocean terrain, and galleys double in coastal, and manipulate the movement speeds to compensate... just some ideas I've been pondering, but don't want too many exotic changes in XML to do.

I've modified Civ4unitinfos.xml.

All the defense mods for sailing ships vrs galley type have been added.

For Galleass, I modified the defense to -30 rather than -50 as I figured that this unit relied less on boarding than more primitive galleys.

Conversely, I added -30 to Galleon since, though a sailing ship, it mainly used the boarding tactic of galleys in combat. Additionally, I made its combat value 7 rather than 6.

Finally, the xml had had the Galleon unable to traverse ocean. I gave it ocean going ability.

Alright, I tested the new version a bit, and there is much improvement.:) However, here are some criticisms. I'll post the problems in bullet form:
1. Why did you use the regular Isabella LH for Theodora? Amra already has a reskin for Theodoa in his Byzantium in the Civilization downloads section. Also, he has a Basil II Bulgaroctonos as well.
2. Scenario inaccuracies: Lithuania needs to be nerfed. A lot. Byzantines need strengthening. A lot. Moors still Catholic. A lot.
3. There are nearly no Civilopedia or Sid's tips entries for anything actually, I may do a Civilopedia text file and post it in the next couple of days, but I am not good at Sid's Tips.
4. Diplomacy music. This should be an important part of the next version. A piece of music for each culture would give the mod a lot more feel to it when you're talking to them, instead of that eerie silence.
5. A list should be made of the civs that don't have a unique LH, so that it can easily be taken care of.
6. 2nd UU's maybe a list could be made for future reference as the mod gets more complete to allow easier addition of 2nd UU's.
7. A forgotten civ, maybe the Sicilians can be added with, uh, someone as leader?
8. Whose the Sassanid Persian leader? Kavadh? Never heard of him. Might just be a result of my ignorance though. I would think a better leader for them would be either Yazdegerd II or Yazdegerd III. Yazdegerd II was the emperor of Persia around 451, and is famous for his avid persecution of Christians (Armenians and Georgians and Aghbanians) and Jews to a lesser extent, and also for killing St. Vartan Mamikonian on the battlefield. Yazdegerd III fought against the Arab invaders and was able to hold them off, but after he died, the Persians could not effectively resist the Arabs. Also, maybe the Immortal should be their UU again, since it was still their most important bodyguard unit.
9. Another interesting observation, there are more wonders than actual buildings. Don't know what can be done there, I guess theMiddle ages were all about wonders and less about buildings.

Don't let this long list of criticisms fool you, the mod is much improved.

If more buildings are needed, we can certainly ask for suggestions... here are a few:

-mint, royal mint national wonder (with coinage, some monetary/taxation effects)
-tourney, Royal tourney national wonder (tourney - happiness generator)

These are a couple off the top of my head. I'm certain if I looked into it, I could create more... and make better effects with the above two, as well.

Could another Civ be added to counter the Lithuanians should they be too powerful. The only one I can think of would be the Finns... but were they too primitive to really be nothing but barbarians within the sheme of this mod? I suppose we could add a Crusader state like the Teutonic Order, as well, which actually fought against the Lithuanians, but they may have been too far west to have any real effect in keeping the Lithuanians tame.

I've not yet playtested sufficiently to see some of the items you've mentioned as far as play balance, Drtad. I'm not certain how these can be addressed... could helpful resources be added near Byzantium while some be taken away near Lithuania?

Well, I took another look at the map and realized what the problem was. Constantinople is surrounded by grassland and coast, making it have pathetic production. Lithuania on the other hand, has tons of forests so it can chop and chop and chop and get enormous amounts of production. Perhaps we can steal an idea from TAM and make a new forest type called "dense forest" which gives no bonuses and can't be chopped until you research a later tech so tjhat should prevent Lithuania from being a powerhouse early on. I think the East in general, (Byzantines, Turks, Armenians, Arabs)are very weak, the only country I have seen grow to compete with Europe is Egypt's sultanate.

Some unit notes that may be bugs:

- shouldn't Arquebusier and Janissary have copper and iron as required resources? Handgunner needs them, so it makes sense for them to be required by the more advanced units.

-Goten Huskarl - Axeman that requires no Iron. Is this meant to be.

-Tarkan - requires just Horse. Is this meant, or should it need Horse and Iron like the normal unit it replaces.

Wasn't there a forest chop bug that Hr_Oskar kept mentioning? Has that been fixed?
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Anyway, the production bonus that forests give is still enough to catapult Lithuania to the top.

I think that there should also be the Novgorodian Rus just so that the Lithuanian growth can be stunted.

The reason I didn't use a custom leaderhead for Theodora is that although one is already made for her, no other leader uses the Isabella LH and I felt that it looked Byzantine enough (for now) after I included the greek background. However, I do think that adding in a new leaderhead for Basil is a good idea, I don't like his current one either.

Adding in Diplomacy Music is a good idea, and will be one of my goals for version 0.5. When I do include it, it will be part of the music add-on, since having it in the regular download would make the file enormous and difficult for many users to use.
