Exoplanet!

The Polituburo of the General Assembly of Habitat 9 volunteers to guarantee the safety and security of the NWS.

The Workers' Syndicate accepts Habitat 9's offer to volunteer in guaranteeing the safety of Habitat 13, and we are ready to move forward with a program of demilitarization in order to ensure the other factions on Unity that we are serious about seeking a new path forward to not repeat the same mistakes as our previous leadership. We want to note that the goal of this program is not to permanently disband our armed forces but to temporarily reassign the majority of military personnel into other relevant positions within the Syndicate workforce for the remainder of our time on Unity, so they can be beneficial in aiding reconstruction work and preparing for planetfall. While it was the Order of Man's genocidal operations that initiated this crisis, actions for which we continue to condemn them, the fault lies too with the Syndicate for our previous leadership's use of excessive military force to subdue their efforts.

The Autumn Crown

Fifthist.png

The flag/logo of the Autumn Crown, representing its Five Principles
The Autumn Crown, formerly known as the offshoot of New Atlantis, was officially reorganized into its current iteration four Earth-years ago with the coronation of the current Empress, Alaria. The process of reorganization and reform have been occurring for decades beforehand during the long regency, where the former governors and the Equity Lords agreed to cede portions of their autocratic power over the population to elected officials and a council of technocrats elected among their peers in education, research, and engineering services.

The newly founded phyle have declared the following to be their Five Founding Principles:

  1. Right of Self Determination of Lifestyle and Political Ideologies: by constitution, the Autumn Crown will never prevent emigration to another phyle or government organization by the people within the Crown's jurisdiction unless said person is currently the target of a prosecution by the judicial branch of the Autumn Crown.
  2. Right to Information: Barring information related to the military, espionage, and critical technologies, censorship of information of any form shall be banned within the Autumn Crown's jurisdiction, with any individual having full access to the information and data available to the public in other phyles and organization.
  3. Right to Anonymity: Right of anonymity is guaranteed, with bans in place to prevent intrusive data collection of certain identifying information deemed critical: name, dwelling, and relations.
  4. Right to Mental Sanctity: The Autumn Crown guarantees that there will be no projects undertaken by the Crown to intrude or directly influence the persona of any individual within the Autumn Crown using any surgical, chemical, or electrical means.
  5. Right to Elections and Constitutions: to prevent autocracy by the monarchy, the technocratic councils, judicial apparatus, the military, or any other apparatus of power within the Autumn Crown, citizens of the Crown shall elect representatives and ministers by direct democracy, with non-state affiliated organization being allowed into the election process in order to verify its fairness. These officials will vary in their roles and power, but will collectively possess veto power against other powers within the state and may collectively call to establish a tribunal against any member of the Crown, if they fear that the laws and constitutions have been violated.

.............................................................................

Monarchy of the Autumn Crown

Monarchy of the Autumn Crown is slightly a misnomer, considering its non-hereditary nature. There are currently no succession laws for the monarchy of the Autumn Crown aside from precedence of election by the technocratic council.

The Monarch of the Autumn Crown is much better described as an elected director of the phyle with a guaranteed tenure for life, in aristocratic/monarchic traditionalism that the Autumn Crown chose to retain from the days of New Atlantis. Current Empress of the Autumn Crown, being much more associated with the technocratic council, maintains very few trappings of aristocracy in the routine of the Autumn Crown, choosing to go by a scientists' scrubs or formal suits rather than royal dresses or uniforms usually associated with the monarchy of New Atlantis, despite protest from the more conservative minded section of the population.

The decision to reform into a monarchy from a autonomous colony came from the nerve stapling scandal. Despite the disgracing of the Equity Lords and the Governor, polls of the population showed no clear majority the future path for the New Atlantis phyle. This, combined with tense standoffs with the (still very heavily armed) forces loyal to the Governor and the Equity Lords forced the new government of the Technocratic Council to a compromise solution. The position of the Governor who held autocratic power would be abolished and be replaced with the position of a Monarch who would be checked by constitutional and bureaucratic checks to their power. The new 'dynasty' of a sort would be 'grown' on board the Unity, with genetic materials taken from various Equity Lords' family members and raised/educated by the members of the Council, whose head will rule the phyle as a 'regent' and set up the political infrastructure for the monarch once they are ready to take the mantle.

While this compromise solution satisfied both the progressive and conservative section of the New Atlantis phyle, ensuring the phyle's stability in the past forty or so years during which time the gene seed material for the new "monarch candidate" was carefully tested, vetted, and eventually grown, the coronation itself and the subsequent rule of the new Empress have been trying times. The new Empress have shown no particular inclination to respecting or building upon the monarchic institution that she was born to fill, addressing herself firstly as a Science Officer rather than Empress in her private correspondences. Conservative leaders have accused the Council of Technocrats on filling her with values that are not conducive to leading the Autumn Crown, and the current Empress' steadfast refusal to wed any of the Equity Lords' families or decide upon succession laws for the phyle have thrown the entire monarchic institution into doubt.

................................................................................................................

Empress Alaria

Due to her nature as a result of "bunch of Equity Lords and bio engineers playing blocks with genetic codes," Empress Alaria currently lacks a family name: part of the compromise between Equity Lords and the Council of Technocrats leading to her creation being that she would take the family name of whomever she weds. Raised in a laboratory by bio engineers and other technocrats, she tends to hold more progressive opinions than her title as the Empress would suggest. Her nature as a designer baby constructed from scratch from various genetic materials using the very best technology that the phyle's bio engineers could provide also mean that her genetic code is significantly warped from baseline humanity, with longevity and improved synaptic response being heavily emphasized. She also bears uncanny resemblances to families of various Equity Lords in New Atlantis in certain respects.

The Empress currently holds significant executive power within the Phyle itself, being its spiritual as well as executive leader.

........................................................................................................

Culture/Lifestyle/Politics

Masks, helmets, and veils are common in the Autumn Crown. While helmets grew in popularity, especially those who regularly access the Spine, due to the necessity of living in an enclosed ship in the vacuum of space, masks and veils grew in popularity within average populace of the Autumn Crown due to the nerve stapling scandal--something that threatened to eliminate the individuality of lower class citizens in the New Atlantis phyle, with wearing of masks and veils being seen as a sign of protest.

The fashion trend continued into the newly organized Autumn Crown and its celebration of the precept of anonymity and self determination.

Materialism and rejection of spiritualism is another facet of Autumn Crown's culture, with pursuit of discovery and scientific and logical answers to problems being considered the paramount good. Universities, engineering workshops, and research institutions within the ship have much power over Autumn Crown's politics, and the technocrats of these institutions elect among themselves members to serve on the Council of Technocrats.

While the psuedo aristocrats known as the Equity Lords have lost much of their power, they still hold much power and influence among manufacturing and financial institution within the Crown as well as its military organizations. These tend to frown upon the culture of masks and helmets that the Autumn Crown is rapidly adapting, although some of its younger generation have started wearing elaborate masquerade masks and veils to keep up with the times.

Elections are held on a five year basis, with each organization, districts, and enclaves affiliated with the Autumn Crown sending representatives based on their relative power and value contributed to the society, as determined by a bureaucratic organization with representatives from most major organizations and power brokers within the Autumn Crown. The office of Prime Minister, however, is always elected by direct democracy of every individual within the Autumn Crown.

As approved by Immac:

Assuming command of the progressive Islamic AAA phyla; Ummah-al-Salaam under the Council of the Cemaat.

Order of Man is NPC'd. I leave them with this:

Ummah Al Salaam
Habitat
Habitation Module 19 (commonly dubbed New Mecca), is the centerpoint for UAS governance and residency aboard Unity. From New Mecca the Cemaat guides and protects its people in peace. In the eastern sector of their home is the Mosque of New Mecca where the people give prayer. Habitat 19 is additionally known for its aesthetic beauty, with vast automated gardens, artificial rivers and lines of gene-modified date trees maintained and plucked on a regular basis by the populace, forming a peaceful and zen-like environment for its inhabitants.

At the center of the habitat is the Great Bazaar of Salaam where trade from all across Unity flourishes. Whatever one may desire, the Bazaar holds. UAS peacekeepers patrol the streets on a regular basis, acting as both fire control and habitat security. Their tasks mainly involve ensuring the continued peace of New Mecca and the protection of its values and peoples, but they also indulge in civil tasks such as construction and minor repairs wherever it is required.

Additionally, aside from schools, mag-rail transportation, utilities and other basic requirements for a functioning society comes the Khaled Adid Military District. From here the UAS stores and protects its Earth-tech arsenal, as well as trains and maintain its soldiers. Within the district lie the Trance compound, home to the Chosen.

Government

Ummah Al Salaam's governing body aboard Unity is based upon their original Phyla leadership on Earth. It is composed of a council or assembly of seventeen elected representatives who compose the core of the Habitat's government. They represent the corner stone of the government and guide policies for the UAS as a whole. Tens of smaller Cemaat's are present in every enclave or smaller factions associated with the UAS to provide individual leadership to those areas aboard Unity. These things include distribution of medical supplies, food and materials, military protection and computing network support for the populace. Any interesting feature that is present in the Cemaat or the Primes as they have been known is the breakdown of numbers.

A principle beholden by the UAS since its inception as the early Cemaat is the idea of being indivisible. After the first Cemaat of 6 members were stuck in deadlock over initial policies, a seventh member was added. This was known as the Prime Numbers Principle. The PNP states that any council must be composed of members that complete a prime number. This new policy was also coupled with the Civil Responsibility Clause which prevented Cemaat members from Abstaining on voting and having their current votes, as well as passed votes logged in the archive.

The PNP has helped the UAS move forward on a lot of divisive issues that would have other wise been stuck on the table. With all Primes required to vote, a majority was always reached, thus nothing was left on the table. Election for Primary Cemaat members take place every 5 years with minor Cemaat members up for re-election every 3. With the expansion of mediated reality election season lasts just a couple of months, instead of the near constant cycle as seen in western democracies of Earth. This appropriates maximum legislative time for the government and allows for the passage numerous laws and reforms in a timely manner.

Culture
The peoples of the UAS are a progressively religious and democratic sort whom values the ideals of peace, charity, good deeds and mutual prosperity, but do not shy away from the act of defending themselves in times of conflict. As a spiritually progressive people, they hold on to their traditions but accept change if it will progress their spirituality and does not radically endanger their community for the worse. Indeed, the UAS is filled with a people whom accepts others and find themselves attempting to better themselves and the lives of those around them, as great Allah intended.

Military
The armed forces of Ummah Al Salaam aboard Unity is intended to be small, elite combat cadres. They strike not with the might of a hammer, but rather with the surgical precision of the scalpel. At the KAMD the UAS military conducts rigorous military exercises both in zero-g environments, close quarters, as well as in facilities explicitly constructed to simulate the environment and gravity on NESIOT. They employ hit-and-run tactics and the use of nanite and electronic warfare to overcome larger foes. The KAMD is currently under the supervision of General Hakeem Al-Hassan.

Spoiler :

The Al-Ammar
Al-Ammar are the UAS next generation combat soldiers and pilots. They are soldiers and combat pilots who have received trance augmentation. Selection for the program is rather rigorous. Early screening has revealed an unexpected aptitude for trance in the Ummah Al Salaam population similar to that revealed in the Zen Serotonin population.

Specifically, those individuals who were most pious in their faith, who had the most discipline over their prayers and specifically meditation, were found to score very highly in psychofeedback and biofeedback tests that form much of the entry examination for skilled soldiers and pilots seeking to enter the new elite programs. As a result, the new programs are filled with particularly faithful members of the phyle, those with the greatest taqwa (spiritual enlightenment mixed with piety).

New recruits undergo extensive upgrades to their exocortex, making them acutely aware, at a conscious level, of where their focus is, of their state of conscious acceptance, ‘mental non-being’, even clarity- effectiving allowing them to exist in a state of constant deep meditation. Combining this physhofeedback prorgam with very minute and limited doses of neural plasticity drugs, the would-be trance soldiers and pilots learn to submerge their conscious desires, their frantic everyday concerns, even their sense of ‘self’ and to just ‘be’ in the moment.

They learn to trust their unconscious mind, that part of their mind which neuropsychologist call the ‘reptile brain’- the cerebellum, to act without conscious thought. Together with massive cybernetic exocortical investment in this part of the brain and the reflex arcs originating from it, the soldiers learn to act without conscious thought, to be a passive observer to the actions they themselves initiate. This doesn’t mean that they are not in control of their own bodies- quite the opposite- merely that the control occurs before they are aware of it.

As it was considered a requirement for early colonization and protection later on, Trance technological knowledge and production facilities was brought along with Habitat 19 for deployment and use on NESIOT.

Currently two groups of Ammar are outfitted and ready for deployment.

The Chosen

The first group selected was that of special forces commandos known as the "Chosen" lead by Captain Muhammed Embase. Originally based on an identical special forces group from their homeworld known as the Disciples, the "Chosen" are an S Rank alpha team composed of some of the best counter-terrorism commandos that the UAS could produce on Earth. They currently form the basis of the UAS Trance Soldier Program on the Unity expedition.

The Enlightened

The Enlightened, or Dive Signal as they have been dubbed, is the second Ammar group and are meant to be elite, even for the Trance Soldier Program's standards. A "rapid crisis resolving" project of General Al-Hassad and greenlit by the Ceemat they are extensively augmented soldiers based on top-grade Trance volunteers whom have willingly allowed themselves to become true weapons of peace of the UAS. They have given up everything to become perfect weapons in defense of their phyla.

Aside from their TSP augmentations, their alterations include an integrated combat exoskeleton, a built-in emergency nanite medical injection system, bone densifier, body dermal plating, muscle stimulants and growth hormone therapies. They are trained and bred for all combat environments and situations, especially warfare with an emphasis on "high risk, high reward." Only under the most critical and dire situations is Dive Signal ever deployed to resolve the matter.

Mini-Update:

Repairs:

In the wake of the damage to the reactor cooling systems, telescope, and colonization module, a number of phyla have come together to enact repairs. It takes only two days with the many phyla working together and with the molecular printers working at full capacity but very soon the telescope and infrastructure for the coolant are back online.

Now the only issue is the massive loss of coolant fluid. As expected, the fluids cannot simply be replaced with some other material and the loss of the elements that make up the fluid are much more critical and difficult to replace than manufactured parts that can be made from carbon or other elements that are in much greater supply.

The ship’s de-acceleration continues to be ~20% short of what is required. As navigators consider means of slingshoting around the major gravity wells of the gas giants in the outer systems (extending time in flight but ultimately letting the ship get to its destination relatively whole), engineers are considering what mass they could abandon to enact a faster de-acceleration on the remaining mass (arriving on time but with less total ship actually getting there).

Power also remains an issue.

The Autumn Crown calls the second emergency Consensus Session into being.

The first order of business is to announce the results of the last voting session of the Consensus.

Proposal to create a Planetfall Authority have succeeded by overwhelming margins. Current candidates for the Captaincy is the Autumn Crown, headed by Empress Alaria, and the Goodmen phyle, headed by Goodmen Obademi. The Autumn Crown currently have the support of Politburo of Habitat 9, while Goodmen is supported by the Keepers.

Second proposal to seize command authority from the Keepers have succeeded by narrow margins. In the interest of peace, the Keepers have agreed to submit to any elected Planetfall Authority leader, and once this is confirmed we shall consider this matter closed until further notice.

......................................................................................................

Second order of business is to list the currently submitted solutions to issue of limited deceleration. In the absence of the captain will also begin to collect volunteers to sacrifice some of their material assets in order to complete these various projects.

Slingshot Method: Proposed by Keepers.

This will allow us to reach the planet NESIOTIV without any sacrifice of our assets. However, this will also add 14 months to our travel time. While vector calculation can be done as an aside, the Crown recommend that this step be taken as second to last resort (with last resort being the decoupling of various non essential components of the ship to reduce mass). The Crown notes that morale of the people on board is exceptionally low, and that news of even bigger delay with the extension of harsh rationing and lack of activity that will entail may be fatal to social cohesion.

Secondary Coolant Loop: Proposed by the Outermost.

The Outermost phyle, along with various engineering specialists, assert that a secondary coolant loop can be jury rigged around the non functioning reactor to temporarily enable the reactor to be active once more. While the carbon material for the creation of the loop itself is plentiful, we currently lack the coolant fluid itself.

The Outermost have suggested using either liquid nitrogen or ammonia for the new coolant fluid for the secondary loop. This will impact our agricultural production around the ship, necessitating harsher recycling and rationing measures.

Fabrication of primary coolant: Proposed by the Autumn Crown

The Autumn Crown alleges that lithium, beryllium, and fluoride element required to create the primary coolant mixture is still plentiful within the ship in our computation, weapons, and agricultural assets. By deconstructing weapons and missiles to extract beryllium, deconstructing computations equipment to extract lithium, and extracting fluorine from our water supply (among other sources), we can fabricate the original coolant mixture and enable the reactor to function once more.

Orion Drive: Proposed by Goodmen Obademi

The Goodmen propose that creation of a new propulsion system through nuclear pulse detonation, using materials harvested from defunct systems such as Habitat 24 and empty fuel tanks, alongside existing fabrication capability. In brief, this entails deceleration through creation of a physical blast shield in front of the ship and strategic detonation of fusion warheads in our path in order to deceleration by the explosive force.

Engineers in both the Crown and the Goodmen phyle have acknowledged that this system is both possible and likely effective, although the Outermost have put forth a strong dissent against this proposal.

Alternatively, the Goodmen phyle proposes harvesting the defunct reactor and the engine block to fashion the new blast shield, although this will prevent any further functionality of the engines. Primary good of this plan is that we may be able to reach the planet without sacrifice of any material or agricultural assets.

This session of Consensus will collect the names of phyles willing to lend their power towards the various proposals submitted, along with volunteers for various programs that the Autumn Crown believes is necessary for the continuous functioning of the ship and pursuit of the various solutions for our ship's problems.

Do List

  1. Sending Science Teams/Lending Computation power for slingshot maneuver: Keepers, Autumn Crown
  2. Sending engineering team and fabrication power towards manufacturing the secondary loop: Outermost
  3. Fabricating new primary coolant: Autumn Crown
  4. Enaction of stricter recycling and rationing programs: Autumn Crown
  5. Enaction of stricter power saving measures: Autumn Crown
  6. Limited deconstruction of military stockpile for lithium and beryllium: Autumn Crown
  7. Draining of ammonia from farms and other agricultural production for the secondary fuel loop: Autumn Crown
  8. Draining fluroide from water supply and enacting water savings measures: Autumn Crown.
  9. Harvesting construction materials and other needed supplies from Habitat 24: Due to Outermost's objection, this will be held as a vote. Autumn Crown abstains from voting for now.

Senior O'Neill of the Outermost confirms our intentions to construct a secondary coolant loop. We will require the raw material for the coolant and would appreciate the assistance of any radiation-hardened robots which could assist in the construction itself.

We vote against the Plan Orion as it seems riskier and less reversible than the sure-fire fix of repairing and/or replacing the coolant loops.

We also vote for Empress Alaria of the Autumn Crown for captaincy for the duration of the current Crisis

The Augurs and Scientists of the Keepers are watching the stars with a keen eye, the better to plot our course through the troubles ahead.

Keeping in line with our demilitarization program, the Workers' Syndicate is ready to join the Autumn Crown in a limited deconstruction of military stockpile for lithium and beryllium. Seeing as responsibility for this crisis lies partially with the Syndicate, we are also ready to implement stricter rationing, recycling and power saving measures in Habitat 13 if the Order of Man in Habitat 7 does so aswell.

We join the Outermost in opposing the Orion Drive as it seems excessively risky for a Plan A. For the captaincy we vote with Habitat 9 for the Autumn Crown's candidate.

Faction List so far in no particular order(if I'm missing or misidentifying someone please say so):
Tongyi (?): Crezth, Habitat 9

The Phyle's official name was Lei Fang before we split off to form Habitat 9. Lei Fang is a poetic name but I don't think it suits the current phyle. Rather, we are known to ourselves as Tianyi (alternatively Tian-ji) (天翼), meaning roughly "aspire to heaven."

The Politburo of Tianyi has agreed to enact stricter rationing in the expectation of a longer time to landfall. Our workers will also be put to work dismantling old weapons and any tech that Autumn Crown dubs superfluous at the current moment, in order to help recoup fragile supplies. We hope that some of the other phyles will agree to donate their weapons for this purpose as we shall focus entirely on recycling.

The Primes has taken all options into great consideration and votes in 12 for, 5 against in favour of the Secondary Coolant Loop. We will assist in the jury rigging to the best of our abilities.

May our choice be just, and lead us to Jannatul Firdaus Al-A’la.

Autumn Crown reminds everyone present that it's not the engineering problem and manpower that is the problem but the shortage of materials, espescially ammonia, lithium, beryllium, and fluoride.

Meanwhile we have a ton of reinforced metals and nuclear material, equipment ideally suited for an Orion Drive.

That is very true.

Second Emergency Consensus Session
The Apaurusheya would like to comment on the following:

First, we endorse Empress Alaria for the Captaincy for the Planetfall Authority.

Second, We believe that further travel times, rationing and reduction of agricultural production will inflame tensions aboard our vessel. Therefore we vote against the Slingshot Method and Secondary Coolant Loop. We are in favor of the Fabrication of Primary Coolant with the construction of the Orion Drive as a final measure if the coolant fabrication is not enough.

Third, we favor the harvesting of construction materials and needed supplies from Habitat 24 with all parties receiving an equal share.

Do List

  1. Sending Science Teams/Lending Computation power for slingshot maneuver: Keepers, Autumn Crown
  2. Sending engineering team and fabrication power towards manufacturing the secondary loop: Outermost
  3. Fabricating new primary coolant: Autumn Crown, Apaurusheya
  4. Enaction of stricter recycling and rationing programs: Autumn Crown
  5. Enaction of stricter power saving measures: Autumn Crown
  6. Limited deconstruction of military stockpile for lithium and beryllium: Autumn Crown, Apaurusheya
  7. Draining of ammonia from farms and other agricultural production for the secondary fuel loop: Autumn Crown
  8. Draining fluroide from water supply and enacting water savings measures: Autumn Crown.
  9. Harvesting construction materials and other needed supplies from Habitat 24: Apaurusheya

The Politburo of Tianyi seconds the sentiment advanced by Apaureshaya. To replace the primary coolant should be our first objective. But we see no problems with allowing the Goodmen to receive materials and expertise to construct the Orion Drive as a back-up measure. This will give us, in total, two measures if one should fail.

There was a slight commotion in the Magnificat that evening. The regulars came in at usual following the musical toll of the 4th Hour Bell, many were dismayed to learn that what had once been the only free house in all of habitat four was now charging a small energy credit for drinks. Carrie tried to explain the situation to the drinkers the situation and thankfully many of them were responsive. All to many of the residents of H4 were involved in professions which were now feeling the squeeze as resources dwindled.

Like much of the rest of the ship Habitat 4 was a diverse place with many different peoples inhabiting it. Across the bar she could see representatives from all the major factions of the habitat. James Blundell a influential Mormon was sat next to the bar, in one hand a glass of the habitats own whisky and in the other a polytablet filled with various datasheets which he poured over with fascination.

Sitting at a table by the window that looked out onto the empty streets were Gertrude Hecke and Emilia Jacobi both laughing loudly over a pint as they reminisced about their childhoods. The two of them were also Mormon and enjoyed the privileges granted by being members of the most powerful faction of Habitat 4 - their clothes were noticeably nicer than those of other customers. Those others included Harry Marris, an youth who sat with another man - Kelvin Morgan - as they argued over some technical schematics laid out on the polytablet at their table. Morgan was wearing the grey jumpsuit with an Orange diamond on the shoulder that marked him out as a senior Unity technician.

Not all of the people in the public house were locals though. There were a couple of chaps from the Order of Man clearly stopping off on their way back from a patrol down the spine. Others she knew were regular visitors who brought the vegetable produce of the farm-gardens of Habitat 16 to be sold in the other habitats. Habitat 4 generally didn't need such supplies as it had its own extensive farm-garden complex however they often bought fruits that were not so readily available here and were good supplier of the Magnificat too. Today the traders looked weary though, rumours persisted that with the recent energy shortages the harvest is H16 were failing and food was becoming tight in the sternward habitats.

Carrie served another drink to a customer, her hands well trained in the art of drawing a pint. She was 28 and had been Head Steward of the Magnificat for two years now. She was proud of her work here and proud that she knew all the faces of all the regulars and exactly what they would want to drink.

Following the rays of artificial sunlight that beamed in through the doorway she caught a glimpse of the Harcourt talking to another man before walking towards the door. He was holding a polytablet in his hand and a grim look in his eyes. He strolled in though the door and up to the bar laying town the glowing display down for her to see. Registering its intended change of viewer the polytablet proceeded to automatically spin the datasheet round so she could look at it.

Carrie thumbed through the datasheet her face turned sour "What's going to happen?" She asked.

Harcourt shrugged in a no reassuring way "The Habitats are looking at various solutions." He thumbed up the list of proposals on the polytablet.

"We're still going to get there though?" Carrie asked "I'll still see Planet in my lifetime?"

Harcourt shrugged again. "I can find Baxton, I presume you know where he is though. Do you think you could take this to him?"

Carrie nodded and continued to thumb through the datasheets. "He won't be happy."

-----------------------------------------

Deep below the apiaries and sheep fields of Habitat 4 Baxton was tinkering. Unlike the rest of the ship there weren't organised maintenance teams for this sort of equipment. The hanger was large and filled with all sorts of equipment that was kept in reserve for the colonisation efforts. Things like materials for prefabricated shelters, recon rovers, generators and cultivation tools. It was all there as a backup in case of system failure with the Compilers.

Given the relative unimportance of the systems it was something more of a hobby pursuit of the people who used their time to ensure they were in working order. In the whole time he had worked on this maintenance he had never bumped into anyone he didn't know.

Richard was crouched down by a recon rover giving the engine a look over when he heard someone else enter the room. He didn't bother looking up, he could guess who it was. He had heard the news. Footsteps continued along the hanger floor until the stopped a short distance off. "What Ho Dicky!"

He stood up and tuned around to see the young lady dressed all in a red gown. "If it isn't the infamous Recon Rover Rick!" she said walking towards him gesturing at the vehicle he was working on.

"I hate than nickname." He responded, unable to hold back a wide grin.

Carrie shot him a smirk back and went to sit on the side of the vehicle "And I know that, of course." She looked around the hanger and kicked her heels against the side of the rover. "Had a good day?" she asked.

Reichard sighed and rolled his eyes. "I still haven't found the bug in the ventilation chambers. Its been 4 weeks now and the ship seems to be falling apart more and more."

Carrie's smirk vanished "You've heard the news?"

"Yeah."

She pulled out her polytablet from its holster. "Harcourt had me coming down here to tell you."

Richard chuckled "That's just like him though isn't it?"

Carrie's smirk returned which made Richard smile too. He remembered something he had been meaning to ask her for a while now. Butterflies began to well up in his stomach. "Carrie," he said slightly sheepishly "I've been thinking about things..."

She gave him a questioning look, indicating for him to go on. He plucked up all the courage he could muster. "I've been thinking that the two of us might want to apply for permit."

She gasped but then smiled "I didn't realise you were..." the implied next word would have been straight.

"Oh," he said "I mean I'm not necessarily, but..." he paused "Don't you just think we'd make good parents?"

In Habitat 4 the problems of population growth had been dealt with in two ways. The major churches of the Habitat preached the wholesomeness of homosexual relationships until it had become the norm for couples to be same sex. Secondly was - as was the case in most habitats - the need for permits to be able to have children. This was how Habitat four had kept its population relatively low since take off generations before.

Carrie smiled and hopped down from her perch on the rover. "Absolutely!" she answered and hugged him.

Extract from the Introduction by Her Grace the Lady Cross to the first edition of A Testament of Planet - Datalinks

To understand what happened after Planetfall I think its important to know where I came from - how I became the person I am now is ultimately linked to my background in Habitat 4 of Unity.

The Unity mission was an effort to spread humanity to the starts in a way that had never before been imagined. Many people bought into the idea and helped finance the expedition thus securing them a place on the ship. Many of these groups operated on a cultural-religious basis such as those in Habitats 18 and 19. Some groups however were too small to muster the capital to secure their own habitat and so looked for others to support a coalition of funding.

One such set of groups were those which ended up in Habitat 4. A conglomeration of various Abrahamic ethnoreligious groups not large enough to afford their own spaces. Over the course of the great journey Habitat 4 became known as a diverse place where these groups lived together in some sort of harmony. The largest group was of course the Mormons who represented around half the population of the habitat. However there were also representatives of Syriacs, Druzes, Anglicans, Catholics, Jews, Yazidis, Samaritans, Copts, Amish and various other diverse groups. All found a home in Habitat 4.

In order to cater to the needs of so many groups a parochial system was set up where each registered group was called a Parish and all people born into Habitat 4 were registered to a parish. An ecumenical council was then set up with representation proportional to the sizes of the parishes which would have the rights to distribute resources to each parish as well as grant birth permits.

The place itself was nice enough as far as the habitats went. There was artificial sunlight and large farm-gardens which supported the sheep farms and apiaries that the habitat became famous for. The economy that developed on Unity allowed for this specialisation to continue as the journey progressed and by the final stages of the voyage the whole habitat was highly dependent on its trade with the farm-gardens of the Lutherans in Habitat 16.

I grew up in the Anglican parish and like all of the other parishes it has a single business that it used to distinguish itself and facilitate income. For the Anglican Parish that was the public house the Magnificat. This was where I lived and worked for my whole life up until Planetfall...

Spoiler :

Now it's time for the more dangerous stuff. Genetic modification is a subtle process, its results often not making themselves known for decades and the side-effects are permanent. Not only that but doing so after conception can be fatal, with the body rejecting the retrovirus or, worse yet, only partially accepting the new DNA. Modern medicine is miraculous stuff, but rewriting every strand of DNA in the human body is a tricky business and unless you’re willing to spend years going through extensive therapy in the medical labs of Mesa Verde you’ll knock a good five years off your lifespan on average. Even with a complete success the exact effects a given modification is unpredictable as it carries through your life and, ignoring the risk of mutation, can interfere with your brain in serious ways. While basically any other problem is reversible with sufficient time and money, brain damage is brain damage. You can’t just grow a new one and expect to be the same person.

Now I know what you’re going to say, “Goodman, you just spent an entire chapter talking about the benefits of cybernetic augmentation. Why would someone take such a huge risk with genetic modding?” Well, the answer is simple: durability. Cybernetic parts put a great deal of strain on the body and tend to break down over the decades. Replacing the joints, bones, and musculature can help, but that involves even more augmentation and often leads to mental problems as your brain adjusts to the new synthetic bits it's suddenly attached to. The risk is small, but it gets exponentially bigger the more bits are replaced. You ever wonder why you don’t see brains in robot-suits outside of bad sci-fi? They go insane every time. Those nutjobs over in Madagascar once stuck an infant brain in a robot suit thinking that it's pliable little baby brain would be better able to adapt. It went on a rampage less than an hour after waking up.

Don’t worry, your exo-cortex isn’t gonna make you go loopy, well, no more than you’d expect from having constant access to the sum total of human knowledge, but if you’re thinking of replacing your weak, fleshy legs with rockets then think again. Ultimately your brain is your most valuable tool and even your body isn’t the paragon of perfection like, say, mine you’re still far better off with it than going crazy. Those Atlantean troops you see running around in the news? Their augments came with years of extensive surgery and some of the finest medical minds working on them as one of the biggest groups around poured millions of credits into personalizing the augmentation of each soldier. I should know, I am several of those minds.

Of course genetic modifications isn’t strictly better, far from it. As I said before, they tend to be much more subtle. Decrease aging, enhanced cellular regeneration, denser bones, etc, etc. For the most part if you want a big change it’ll cost you elsewhere. You want your kid to run 40 kph? That’s possible, but they’ll pack on the weight as your bones and muscles get densified and you’ll want to get them an O2 tank for their birthday if expecting them to do it often. You want to be as nimble as an acrobat? Then be ready to spend a fair bit of time in the ICU as your lightened bones snap whenever you hit something too hard. There are some general-purpose mods that are relatively benign beyond the universal screenings, but they’ll still cost you time and money for years as they go through checkups and corrective treatment.
