Expansion Packs an Multiplayer Capabilities?

I've had Civ3 for 2 (or was it 3) years but enver really played it until recently. However, I quickly noticed why... There is no multiplayer option! That bites.

However, upon stumbling onto this website, I noticed a multiplayer section. Therefore, how is it done? Specifically, is it possible to play over LAN? Do you need an expansion pack for that?

And if so, is that expansion pack available for Mac OS X?

I would really appreciate feedback.

Nop - sorry. The multiplayer functions are part of PtW and C3C.
Those adons have not been published for us Mac users, so we are not able to join this PBEM thing an stuff like that.

I do not know, if PtW or C3C will run with VPC, but imo this would be the only chance to join a PBEM.

I also don't know whether PtW or C3C plays in Virtual PC, but note that, if it does, you'll have to buy the whole Civ3 software pack again, as the Mac version doesn't include Civ3 for Windows.

Also, by the time you've given Billy Gates his pound of flesh for VPC you might as well buy a cheap PC on eBay instead, and have the real thing.

'Tis for too much effort for a lazy ass like myself to bother with. I'll just have to be content with the singleplayer oppurtunities. Actually, I need to develop my skills more anyway seeing as I'm quite horrible at the game currently. The AI always teams up on me at the end and I'm quite frankly screwed.

Do you trade enough? Sell and buy resources (luxus ;) ) as much as possible.
Have you established embassies? Do so if not!

In case of war search for military alliances, but stay away from Mutual Protection Pacts because this can drop you into unwanted wars.

@c196nataku: The AI will only kick you if you are weak. My guess is you sow the seeds of your downfall early in the game.

You need to get the first 100 turns right so that you hit the Middle Ages running, with a strong foundation. Build cities close together early on, not scattered around the map. Read Cracker's definitive article on the starting moves and make sure you understand the concepts of powerful tiles - those with high food and shield values during Despotism.

Then you need to plan for a second core using the Forbidden Palace to best effect, and get into a more productive government, and you need to expand by fighting. For that you need to understand the corruption system and war weariness. And build attackers, not defenders. Defenders just sit around your cities soaking up your gold in unit maintenance, and waiting for the AI to come and get them.

Read the War Academy/Strategy Articles. Check the spoilers in the GOTM forum, and try playing those games along with the stars. If you want to post a save file here showing the problem, please do so, then we can advise better.

Agreed

Also important to this is the level. Are you playing Deity? Or Warlord? Or wahtever: The higher you go the more you need to play aggressive.
