Hello,

Out of curiosity, is Civilization V going to be getting expansions, or are the DLCs in place of these? If there are going to be expansions, is it worth buying the DLCs, or will those be included in the expansions?

Thanks.

I wasn't friendly? I wasn't mean either... and I don't look at peoples post counts, guess that's my bad?

is it worth buying the DLC? that is the $6 question

i say no, i call ripoff

Let's take a look at this.

An expansion pack can come out with new rules, concepts, and civs, all for the price of $30. BTS brought 10 new civs and 16 new leaders, many new wonders, graphics changes, rules, ect.
Take a look for yourself at everything in did: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=222075

The final price of beyond the sword totaled at $34.99

Now for the DLC. At the current trend each civ is selling for about $5. Ooh! For the price of lunch I can get a DLC. No. You must realize how much you are being ripped off when you purchase DLCs.
If each civilization in BTS cost $5 then the price of beyond the sword from just new civs would be $50. Now you need to add up everything else. Being that individual maps are selling for like $3, its safe to estimate every other thing in the game, if sold as regualr DLC, would add up over $100.

But, sheep consumers don't like to spend that much at a time. So there are two options:
1.) Sell everything combined at a much lower price
2.) Sell everything individually for like $2-5 each

So if you were a developer, you would definitely take option 2 because it equates to lots of money. Previously developers were not quite as capable of doing this, as the games were not internet-based and there was no middle man like steam.
But now that civ v is completely internet based and reliant on steam, the developers can achieve their dreams.

But there is more! This is only the beginning. Soon, they will be selling game necessities as DLC. Half-finished products will be released and then the rest will be sold at high prices. We've already seen this take place for console game. I site Mafia II (also a 2k game!!!!)
A gloomy future lies ahead for gaming.

That's because it's a very controversial topic. There are a lot of questions regarding the morality of certain practices by the developers such as the release of DLC, that many people on this forum are concerned about.

And you know why? Because it WORKS.

You mean like Civ 5?

It's called the Paradox school of game publishing. Quite why publishers have got away with it for so long is paradoxical. It's even happening on consoles.

The morality of selling DLC for a borked game is questionable.

I found Mafia 2 to be an excellent game, but I played it when it was fully patched, and haven't bought any of the DLC.

It does not work. It is only feasible on a short-term. The more the industry uses these kind of marketing/sales strategies, the more goodwill they will lose within their consumerbase. This will result in more (illegal) downloads and less sales on the long term, and thus less turnover.

But sadly, companies are only looking out for their own interests on the short term. My guess would be that the quality of regular videogames will decrease and popularity of different kinds of free-to-play games will increase.

So far I've to say, that the ~10$ for DLCs and the ~50$ for the game were really good investments. It's keeping me busy for months already, I like it and last not least found this forum. That's quite a good return for my investment.

If they really begin to start practices like you describe, then I'll be the first to not buy it anymore. In case of unfairness human intelligence always finds (and found) a way not to pay and still to play. :)

Past history would suggest there almost certainly will be an xpac at some point that fundamentally changes the game. Whether that bundles with any previous DLC is to be determined, but I would venture if it does then there won't be any discount for anyone who already owns it.

That said, DLC is relatively cheap, and comes out quickly, and keeps the game fresh. It's also not exactly a new concept - it's new to the Civ franchise, but the idea's been around for a while. On balance, I like it, and have no problem buying it.

Profit motive: If 2k thinks that they will make money off an expansion, they will make one. Whether DLC will or won't be a part of it is unknown. Ultimately, it comes down to is $4.99 now to have one of the civs more desirable to you than waiting for at least 6 months to possibly play with that civ in an expansion.

The fact that you even bothered registering an account and posting just to ask, tells me you probably value that $5 (per civ) more than the instant gratification. Good for you. You'll probably be happiest waiting and finding out.
