After reinstalling BF 1942 and playing a bit, all of my desktop icons and all web screens appear extra large, filling most of the desktop with icons. Resetting icon size doesn't help much (I've had to delete several just to see the remaining icons) and I have no idea how to get the web screens back to normal... (Also, downloading and installing now seems to take longer, but I don't know if that's related.)

Any suggestions anyone?:confused:

Probably your display settings. Check what your monitor resolution is, sinc eI think BF42 switches it to something really low, hence the large icons.

For some reason I got a message saying "Initialize Renders failed. Check DirectX Installation, Latest Drivers & Graphics Settings [... ] Error: Creation failed: Invalid 3D device type"message when trying to load a BtS mod. I've checked DirectX, which is Direct X10, but the rest I have no idea about what it means. So I panicked and decided to reinstall Civ4 all over again, but did this by using the Trashbin, not Uninstall. I've got Civ4 back installed, but Warlords & BtS won't install, as they're not "uninstalled" properly. While starting up Civ4 I also got the same message, so basically I'm now completely stuck... :sad:

Install the latest DirectX 9.0c

Delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}

Subkeys are under ...\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\... if you're using 64-bit Windows

If you have DirectX10 don't try and install DirectX9.

Try installing Civ to an other directory, or completely delete the Civ4/firaxis directory from c:\program files\ (program files (x86) on x64) and then use a registry cleaner to delete all references to Civ4 (or if you've got some free time/years use regedit.exe).

DirectX 10 is not backward compatible

Indeed. Fortunately the first DX9 game you install should install dx9 that will work. And in general, games are distributed with a version of dx9/10.

That's basically the problem; I've now got Civ4 reinstalled, but when I load the BtS CD all I can choose is "Play" - the Install option doesn't show (whereas I can't tell where there are any files left to load BtS; when I choose Play ofcourse nothing happens). So should I uninstall Civ4 first?

Wow, that really sucks. I think you should uninstall civ4, then clear the directory, and then reinstall.
