Failed to Initialize Renderer

jomorisin.... this is an issue with ATI cards, not nVidia

Zoomba - I beg to differ. I have that video card and I am getting the same error. Perhaps the problem is more pervasive than first thought. Someone else with Nvidia posted in this thread with the same issue.

jomorisin... my apologies then, I was under the impression that the GF2 cards were simply too old to support T&L and didn't meet the min requirements.

Is there a way we can force DirectX 9.0c to reinstall completely? I hit cancel when it tried to install directx during the installation, but of course immediately installed it once I started getting errors, so that may have had something to do with it.

Soren,

I just tried your guidance, which is what we've all been trying all day (clearing drivers, reinstalling, when that failed trying older drivers). I went through and even ran DriverCleaner to clear out every single ATI related file and then reinstalled the 5.10 drivers after your post.

Unfortunately it still isn't working. I've uninstalled, cleared all files from the entire hard drive, went out and got the newest drivers possible, installed, did all the needed restarts between each step... I still get the same error.

I have the latest DirectX version, and even tried reinstalling from the DXSetup file that came with the game CD. Still nothing doing.

I appreciate you guys working on this, but you'll have to forgive my impatience... I really want to play this game! :)

Ditto here. Thanks for the suggestion Soren, but er, hopefully that isn't the only workaround...

Well it's obviously not all ATI cards. I have the Radeon 9800 pro, I installed the game a half hour ago, and it works fine. It works great, in fact. No choppiness no hesitation everything is clear. I gotta admit I was rather surprised when it started up no problem, and very impressed with the game so far.

Did you install DirectX 9.0c from the CD during the install? You need to, because it includes files that are not part of the "Standard" directx 9.0c install pack.

If you didn't, then have a look on the install CD for a folder called "DirectX9", and run "DXSetup.exe" in it.

same here

9800 pro (omega 2.6.61 drivers)
installed Directx that came with the installation.

I completely uninstalled the ATI drivers and then reinstalled them.
I installed the version of DirectX 9.0c that's included on the game disk.

I still get the same error.

Radeon 9550.

Possibly, since the Radeon people who say the game is working all have 9800s (or it seems), it's a conflict with most/all other Radeon cards.

I'm using an x700. I get the same error, although the screen goes black as if loading now.

It's running fine on my 9800 non-pro with Catalyst 5.9.

Although I had DX9.0c on my system already I *did* the DirectX 9.0c install when prompted by the Civ4 install disc.

ainwood - yes I did do the install. No go. :(

Those who are still having problems please look in C:\windows\SYSTEM32 and see if "D3DX9_26.DLL" is there.

ok, i'm a total noob, but can I just run out, and buy a new video card and install that?

if yes what video card should I buy?

This is very annoying as I have already basically re-installed windows.

Anybody that got it to work: post your native screen resolution when u got it to work. Thanks. Somebody in another forum mentioned trying it in 1024x768 first. thanks.,

I am not missing that file, and I am still having the initialize renderer problems after following all the suggestions made in this post and others.
