Failed to Initialize Renderer

Just talked to the EB salesperson I bought it from, and he said he's had 2 other calls about this problem (other than me obviously). Thank God they actually give refunds, I was worried they didn't. Hopefully he warns others about this problem.

Talked to Support 3 times and they have some test Radeon machines they're trying to replicate the error on...looks like this is just a random Radeon issue...I have Radeon 9600's in both computers (one is the mobility) and the laptop worked just fine!! They know this is an issue, but you would think they would have caught this before going live....

I'm getting it to...I could not be more disappointed.

AMD 3500+
X800XL AGP
1 gb RAM

Bugger. I always have bad luck when it comes to issues like this. I imagine I'll be returning it and waiting for a fix.

You're right, you'd think they would have caught it during testing. However, there are literally billions of combinations of computer parts and peripherals, not even counting software. Although, we don't pay them to play their didgeridoos, do we?
I suggest that everyone takes the time they'll be waiting for a patch or fix and put it to use to better society. I myself am going out to better my community by volunterring my services at a youth group. This passes the time AND you feel good!

...or sit around. ^_^

oh man, does this suck. mine won't run too. I have specs, but nobody is interested in specs anymore, it's a Raidon9600, and it's fine, as are my drivers. I say we all go to the bar. Or go see doom. Or go see doom, and turn it into a drinking game. Eithor way, I don't wanna remember this kinda dissapointment.

<--- Decides to sit around and hit the refresh key every 10 secs. to make sure he didn't miss the fix.

LOL is it wrong of me to choose the latter? I really didn't feel like finishing up DOOM RoE anytime soon, but if I just sit here dwelling on this, I think I'll have a brain hemorrhage.

Ok, ok! You DONT have to do something particularly GOOD, but atleast do something. O_o

I'll be playing Black and White II if it's still not fixed in 4 hours.

I'm getting the same error with a Radeon 9600.

So I plug in a geforce MX440 and the game launches. Since this card doesn't support pixel/vertex shading I still can't play because all of the terrain is just black.

I'm no tech support expert, but I think this further confirms that the Radeon cards in question are where the problem stems from.

Hope this helps... and what a waste of a personal day.

Isn't it, Decronicus? This is my only day off, and in the next two days I have to look forward to 20+ hours of work. I'd rather be spending 20+ hours on a game of CivIV

This reminds me of my problems with Diablo2. I think I tried to fix it more than I played it, and I played it a lot! This blows....

i had a similar issue when i bought civ 3 no matter what i tried it wouldnt work turned out it was something benign .. was because when you check your monitor profile mine was generic plug and play the guy at atari support (civ3 was atari/infrogames)suggested i should choose a profile based on the brand monitor i used so i chose a profile for my brand (usually available at brand web site)since then the game worked perfectly i surmise it may be an issue now with soem users too .. although i dunno why nvidia users are not complaining yet i get my game friday and i have nvidia card so lets see what happens

I may be in the minority on this one, but Doom was actually decent entertainment for what it is...the only thing I REALLY didn't like was that they changed the main plot of the entire movie. I won't ruin it for you, but if you see the movie you'll know what I mean.

And no, it won't take away the !Civ4 pain. I've been waiting for a year for this moment, and it's tough to deal with when you've been playing Civ religiously since 1991.

OK. I got the same error message as you all did. As I always do, I skipped the auto-install of directx at the beginning of my Civ installation. After getting the message it was abundantly clear EVEN though my directx version was stated as 9.0c as needed, I wnetinto the install disk // directx directory and MANUALLY re-installed directx 9.0c from there. IMPORTANT>>> you must reboot for the file replacement to work.

Put in ther Install disk (not Disk 2/play disk) to play the game and now it runs smooth as glass. Another problem may be the level of anistropic filtering or full screen anti-aliasing you're running. Though ATI's drivers are pretty good, there are some games that have issues with ATI's AF or FSAA. I'd suggest first turning off FSAA, then trying L2, then L4 - each time running the game. Also try AF off or on.

I'm using Catalyst Control Center as well, so I'm not sure if this could make a difference.
