Failed to Initialize Renderer

Mine worked... X800 Pro AGP, Athlon XP based system. 1280 x 1024

My installation procedure...

1. Insert disk and let autorun.
2. When the directX agreement came up I "cancelled" - I figured I already had it.
3. Completed installation custom, but used all defaults.
4. Ran game and got a missing file error.
5. Browsed to the directX folder on disk 1 and ran the "DXSETUP.exe"
6. Allowed installer to complete while reading the last page of this thread.
7. Ran game.
8. Started successfully.
9. Shouted and waved hands in air.
10. Shut down game immediately and logged on here so you all may know what happened.

Those who are still having problems please look in C:\windows\SYSTEM32 and see if "D3DX9_26.DLL" is there.

Also there for me too... I never got a prompt to install Directx either

Anybody that got it to work: post your native screen resolution when u got it to work. Thanks. Somebody in another forum mentioned trying it in 1024x768 first. thanks.,

Yes, that is what my native screen resolution is set to, for whatever that's worth. I think I've seen others post that even with that resolution they are still having problems though.

Well just to jump on the wagon...
Yes I have an ATI Radeon X800
Yes I have the same problems
Yes I've tried everything everyone else has
Yes I still can't get the game to run
Yes I am ripping all of my hair out

Can I persuade Trip or Soren away from 'Poly?

After many hours I found a driver that works!! So far I have been able to successfully run the Tutorial::

The following ATI graphics driver will work for the Sony VIAO PCG-GRV680 laptop computer and can be found on the Sony website:

ATI Radeon Mobility 9000

Driver Date: 7/30/2003

Driver Version: 6.14.10.6382

this is what we know...

"Anyone who encounters this problem needs to do the following:

1. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the listing titled ‘ATI Graphics Driver’

2. Once uninstalled they need to download the latest version of the Windows Catalyst Driver – 5.10

Windows XP & Windows 2000:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

REBOOT
Retry launching the game

This solution has worked on every single test case and is the only available workaround."

This is the message I get when I tried to update the Graphics Driver.

"ATI Mobile Catalyst Update Wizard

Thank you for your interest in CATALYST

Unfortunately, this software update cannot be installed on your system. Please contact your notebook manufacturer for driver updates."

Sony VIAO Pentium IV

Sony PCG-GRV680 Laptop computer

ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 video card.

Driver version: 6.13.10.6236

I also can't afford to replace it with a new card! What's the deal? Is there going to be a patch? I set aside today as a special day and everything has gone to heck. :(

Edit:

Has anyone used the Firaxis steps and gotten the game to work?

yeah, this is really not cool. so all i know about video cards and their drivers is that (1) my card is an ATI mobility radeon x600 (2) i'm getting the same error everyone else is and (3) i'm not all that comfortable unistalling my driver and then installing the windows catalyst as i don't even know what a windows catalyst is. or what would happen to my video card.

i'd been waiting for today for months, i took the day off from work to get the game at noon and what do i get? discs that not only are labeled incorrectly but upon inserting the "right" disk the program still doens't run. this is rigoddamndiculous. why do you hurt me like this, civ programmers? i loved you... i trusted you. and you send me a box of poop. and the poop isn't even on fire. at least that i could have laughed at.

bummer that my first post ever had to be this disgruntled...

a patch, my kingdom for a patch

Nothing to offer, 9600 ATI one-off, I'm getting the same error message as the rest of you guys about initializing renderer. I guess I'm going to have to return the game tomorrow....

Ive got a radeon 9600. deleted/updated drivers as in Sorens suggestion and also made sure I installed the Dx 9.0c drivers from the game disk. I did a search for that D3DX9_26.DLL file, and it showed up in windows32.

The game won't work.

This was just posted by Soren over at Apolyton:

the goal: Driver Version: 8.18.0.0

Driver Version: 8.18.0.0

this is what your DxDiag needs to read. If it says something like

Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6575 (English)

then you have an old version which won't work. So, if there are people with that version, they either need to update or we need to figure out why the update is failing.

Incase anybody wanted to try the Omega drivers, I just did. whatever the latest one was for ATI, and a big ol' no go still.

Is that the ATI driver version, How do I check my DxDiag?

In any event, this is a blatant and unforgivable failure by the company. This is not a minor issue, and there is no way with even the most basic testing this could not have been discovered. Kudos to the techs for the help and dedication, but the company is ****.

Today should be a time to show off the companies professional prowess, and they have shown themselves to be incompontent. And then to screw over a fan bas as loyal as Civ's? Utter lunacy. Wait a week or more to use what I payed good money for, what I took the time to reserve months before hand? Let Ford or Dell tell a few thousand people that and see what happens.

And to think I bought this paper weight insread of CoD2 tommarrow. Guess who lost out in the release wars this month.
